Daniel Bryan has retired.

Raw won't go back to 2 hours, it's not their choice. They just need to cut out a lot of bullshit. For one start the show with a wrestling match right off the bat!

Just when you started to feel ok about the retirement

It's clear that he was struggling to make last night a happy night for everyone. Apparently he and Ryback hugged and cried.

If he's finally accepted that he cannot wrestle, I wonder if he has any interest in sticking around. I haven't been this sad since Eddie died. Somehow, I managed to be surprised at Benoit and Edge, but never outright sad like I am with Bryan.

"Raw After Mania" became such a thing only because of Daniel Bryan. Before that night, Raw after Mania was never as interesting, but every year now, people tune in to witness the audience be at their smarkiest. We'll never see an audience get behind someone so naturally and against such odds though. It was such a spectacular moment to have Bryan chants drown out so many WWE events.

All the way from when he was a nobody, fired after choking Justin Roberts and having his name close out PPVs, to the eventual Yes chants at Mania, to the Yes chants after Mania, to the incredibly mesmerizing Yes chants after turning on Bray. Even the No chants showed how incredibly into the audience was. I've rewatched those moments so many times, and I otherwise never do that.

He will probably still be around the business his wife is still under contract with WWE and he is still on total divas. As for him sticking around the business beyond that its a toss up remember what Seth Rollins said in the Daniel Bryan tribute thing Bryan, never cared about the fame or the money to him it was always about his love of wrestling. For him this will be very hard to accept no matter how much a brave face he put on last night.

It takes time to move on. Steve Austin said it took him years. But you know him and the likes of Edge have done well. I hope the same for D. Bry.

House shows are super cheap to run, a lot of them have seats that average 20$. If WWE is ever in your town they have the tag line with their ads "THE BEST VALUE IN ENTERTAINMENT"

They are not making money on a lot of them. Some of the small towns they do only sell like 3000 tickets and they are lucky to break 100k for a gate. Even if all the wrestlers perform free(ie already included in their downside guarantee), travel costs for the performers, crew, etc are still probably more then the gate(s) often. If I had to guess, the main reason they do house shows is people getting to see their favorite wrestlers live makes them more likely to stay a fan, buy merch, subscribe to the WWE Network, watch the TV programs etc.

I think that's the main problem with cutting house shows. If the house shows had absolutely zero impact on everything else, they probably would have been cut down a long time ago.

It says so much that Dave Meltzer says that, in his opinion, the Daniel Bryan retirement segment on Raw was the all time greatest segment in the history of televised professional wrestling.

It was so wonderful, so sad. Even my wife was hanging on to every word he had to say. I just hate it so much.

?!?

Maybe it's just that I'm an old man now, but I was totally unmoved by the whole thing. It was a phenomenal retirement speech that every wrestler probably hopes to have for themselves, but that's all. There are hundreds of moments that made me feel stronger emotions than that. Edge, Flair, and HBK's retirement speeches were more emotional, though less "perfect."

Maybe you're dead inside.

Or maybe I'm still a young and caring 38 year old!

I can't believe he held it together in the ring.

Was at RAW last night - there was a point where a Connor chant started, and then we all saw Bryan about to lose it and the chant just stopped cold. Everyone was holding their breath on whether Bryan would be able to make it through in one piece.

Really? Like when he mentioned his father and his voice started cracking, and you didn't feel a thing?

Sucks to be old I guess.

I'm shocked the speech did nothing for you when your first response in this thread was:

¯_(ツ)_/¯

If your immediate response to finding out a man could no longer do what he loved is point out to everyone that you don't give a damn why would you expect to be moved by his retirement speech?

Yup. It's also the first time I've actually cried at a TV show, let alone an episode of Raw.

I think I just didn't find this whole event as sudden as the rest of you. We've seen this coming for a year, and he's basically been inactive for the last two.
I've been beating the "Daniel Bryan will never wrestle in the WWE again" drum louder than anyone but even then, your heart had to go out to one of the greats finally coming to terms with giving up on his dream surrounded by his fans and loved ones as he retraced the steps of his career in the squared circle.

There weren't many people at all prepared to accept the "Daniel Bryan will never wrestle ANYWHERE again" dream until now. Even he was adamant he would go elsewhere to do what he loves up until just a couple weeks ago.

Right on. I think it's what I said: I've basically considered this guy retired already.

I'd put Bryan's right up there with Edge. You can feel the real emotion from those guys. Flair cries when you open a bag of chips these days so it's hard to feel anything with his emotion.

And Austin still sometimes seems to get wistful about wrestling. He does say that most of the time he's fine about it but every once in a while he does get that feeling that maybe he could do one more match just to feel it one more time. Then it passes and he'll say no, I'm definitely retired for good. But it'll still come back on occasion anyway.

He's a guy that really lives and breathes wrestling, however, you can see it in the detail he goes into when doing the commentary for his old matches.

All that Knowledge built, but the body can't come along for the ride.

I don't know if he'll get the quick HOF induction, but if he does i'm going.

Probably next year at the earliest, though where the hell is that Mania supposed to be set? I thought Minny but now it seems like it could be in Florida. Maybe they'll save Bryan in case they do it at Safeco again in the next few years.

I don't even watch wrestling but watched the entire speech online last night.

I got teary eyed a few times, I can't remember the last time a TV event did that to me.

Finally watched the retirement speech today during lunch. Was fine until they cut to his mom and sis at ringside and Brie coming down to embrace him. Never thought I'd tear up at something pro wrestling related.

I held it together during the speech but lost it for some reason during the network exclusive when he hugged Cole and Cole replied ' love you kid'

Man fuck this. Fuck all of this

I think you mean CenturyLink.

I've never heard Seattle as applying let alone "on the short list" or whatever in any of the rumor articles of where Mania will go next.

Bryan's interaction with Cole is what I'll always think of as the bookends of his WWE career. From their initial confrontation on NXT to the hug last night.

I wasn't into wrestling when it happened but I did hear about it in the news, and even now I get uncomfortable whenever I see Benoit on screen, and I can't stand to watch any of his matches. I don't get how people are able to look past it because I just can't.
Totally understand. Even when I got the WWE Network 2 years ago on launch day, I watched WMXX and while the main event was fantastic, once was enough for me. It felt so weird to watch a match years after what happened. Haven't done so since.

Why does this always happen to the nicest people in many areas of life. It just isn't fair.

Why, oh why did I make the mistake of watching his speech at work? That hit me much harder than any other retirement speech I've heard. Hell, I was even in attendance when Edge gave his the night after WM 27. Really hit me hard when he started talking about his dad getting to see him wrestle.

This was a great moment, one of the greatest moments in wrestling history. You don't get that kind of honest, raw emotion on a public stage anymore.

Yep I got moved to tears. That picture isn't helping too. Daniel Bryan will forever hold a special place for being the wrestler to break out in a way no one ever did and in a time when so much of it looked hopeless. The colossal support from the people and seeing all those veterans and newer talent paying tribute to him for bringing the changes in so many forms for WWE, it's just very hard.

Grateful indeed.

I didn't watch his retirement, but this picture makes me feel sorry for the man. The unfairness of being forced to let go of something you really care about due to circumstances beyond your control is something that most folks should find relatable.

He should take solace in the fact that he was able to do what he loved, and be successful at it. Few people are ever in that position. It'll probably take a few years, but it'll get easier.
