I like it when people expect me to be joking when I say I'm going to do something and they agree to it and when I do it then they go in shock. My night has been entertaining. LOL

If you guys like smash you should check out this game rivals of aether.

http://store.steampowered.com/app/383980

I haven't played it myself but I've heard good things and it looks promising.

It's pretty hard to be successful as a game that's similar to Smash. You don't have the decade and a half of history as a franchise and probably don't have as emotionally charged of a roster. Plus Smash is just a really good game, so it's hard to significantly improve on the formula in a way that will draw normal people to it. I can guarantee my roommates and friends would ask "why not just play Smash?"

I don't know much about Rivals of Aether besides what you can ascertain from watching the first video Steam plays on its page. It feels pretty stiff. A lot of that may have to do with the art style, since it's easier to make bouncier, more energetic and fluid animation in 3D models than in pixel art, but that's no excuse. Towerfall is a great example of a pixel art game which still feels extremely fluid and alive from the many subtle background animations to the secondary interactions with environment objects to the squash and stretch of the character sprites.

I'm not going to pretend I would be good at designing a fighting game, and I'm not wishing anything bad on this game, but it doesn't look very interesting to me. :(

This is my precise view of fighting games. It's something I like the idea of but I just can't be good at.

But I am pretty good at Smash! Pretty recently I made my two grown male friends actually angry at me because I kept kicking their asses with my Dedede and talking shit. Not play mad, actual mad.

Right! I love watching EVO and other tournaments, especially when the commentary is there to help you make sense of it. It's just not something I'm good at nor have enough time to dedicate towards understanding it.

Dedede is a funny character, and I appreciate anyone who can play him well. My mains are Lucina and Samus.

I'm absolutely getting my butt kicked 100%, but I'm still excited to play it. :D

It helps that I have a local place that holds tournaments every week, so I may actually practice a lot more than anticipated.

A buddy came round Friday night to break out SFIV and a few other fighters to warm up a bit for SFV.

I'm so out of practice it's not funny. I expect my Zangeif is going to get manhandled online for quite some time, think I'll find out whether I have the time and patience to get good again in short order.

You know, I wish I had this attitude about it. The problem is that I don't get upset with losing, I get upset at not understanding. If someone defeats me and I can understand how or why they have, then I congratulate them and try to figure out whether I can play better next time. If I lose and I don't understand why or how to play better, then it pisses me off and I'm liable to rage.

One of my favorite game design analysis channels just made an interesting video about the animation of Jak & Daxter with a particular emphasis on squash and stretch. It's part of an ongoing series of the twelve principles of animation and places that they're well executed in video games. I think you'll like it.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BbP6Jsh8M6Y

Also relevant to this thread because earlier videos in the series were about the animation in Shadow of the Colossus.
Whoa, sounds cool. I'll check it out! I wonder how he manages to spend twenty minutes talking about squashing and stretching.

A good chunk of the video is also dissecting how busy some of the cutscene animation is, but this is actually only part 1 of the J&D discussion. The guy doing it used to work at Pixar Canada, and now does game animation up in Seattle I think, so he's very well versed in the art.

Dedede, Lucina (the counters are dope), and I had a period where I really focused on Mega Man, primarily because it seemed to be my only counter against my one friend's playing style.

I've tried over and over to be good with Samus but I can't make it work.

I'm actually banned from using almost every character in Smash with friends.

I'm pretty much relegated to either Jigglypuff or Kirby and even using Jigglypuff is under debate.

Best way to get a song unstuck from your head? Though the song that is currently stuck is amazing. Still, I'm sure I'll need this valuable information at some point in the future.

I usually only bust out Samus when everyone else is stuck on sword fighters (which they started taking up in large part thanks to me owning them with Lucina).

But I really like that there's a huge diversity in play styles, and that not everyone is effective with every player. It helps keep things interesting.

Boo. We don't ban characters, we just turn the handicap on.

The best part of my work day is coming home to have a nap.
This dementia resident will be the literal death of me.

I just watched the whole thing. The way he dissects each animation almost frame by frame is awesome. All of his statements are very clear and the way he talks is full of energy. This guy would be a good teacher, haha.

Oh we tried that, believe me.
When I still won again and again, they started to get superstitious and started to believe that the handicap was actually helping me.

Yes, we set it correctly and no, they are not smart sometimes. :p

With the bolded I actually go the opposite and go close combat, it plays with their head and I can dodge fairly well so it freaks them out haha

Captain Falcon x Toon Link x Samus x Jigglepuff are my go to mains.

I strongly dislike the character design and overall aesthetic -- color choice and animation style - of the Jak games. Oy.

Mashing my spoon in this stew makes the most amazing sound effect for foley work.

Much to my shame, I've never played Smash. And I own Smash U too.

Congrats man! Im not guna lie, I was hoping the end was going to be a little more difficult for you. You breezed past it. That DLC made you too good.

Hahaha! Thanks, breh. I was at a pretty high level for NG by the end. I can at least take pleasure in knowing that I died far fewer times in those final bosses than Feng did. ;)

(And you, I'm guessing. :p)

I'm still so angry about this. hahahahaha
I was gone for like 15 minutes and I come back and he's dead already, how many attempts did it take you? :p

Re: SFV, probably won't be getting it at launch, I tend to get really obsessed with fighting games (I'm an incredibly competitive person) so I wouldn't even have the time to dig deep into it.

I put an unhealthy amount of time at the arcades with SFIV, considering my college at the time was literally next door to it. Those were fun times

Three. I beat the dude after him on the first try. :p

You gotta be kidding me.

Although Moon Presence isn't TOO hard, I just fucked up too many times and not paid attention.
But goddamn, you made the other guy look like a damn chump. :p

He was a little bitch compared to most of the DLC bosses, to be honest. But it's okay. If you admit you sucked, it'll make you feel better. :p

(I'm also convinced that all of Jobbsy's slime gave me super powers.)

I'm kinda terrified of the DLC now. Especially seeing the Orphan fight, goddamn.
HEY MAN, DARK SOULS III WILL BE THE REBIRTH

I don't know why I'm so terrible at Bloodborne, DS is easy pants for me save for Capra Demon

I couldn't beat Orphan without summoning help. What a nightmare that dude was. SO STOKED FOR DSIII, MAN!

Capra is a dick.

How is online Smash these days? I remember trying it around launch with a friend who lives around the corner from me and the lag was crazy pants.
I'd be down for a couple of matches with you cats.

You're welcome.

Lord have mercy. She also has a killer sense of humour which I find super attractive (based Comedy Bang Bang)

Tonight in hilarious Rocket League Adventures.

I watched EVO closely for the first time last year (saw some of previous years here and there) and totally agree. It's so exciting.

I totally get mad easily (at myself) when it comes to execution. That's why I typically avoid fighting games. But I'm hoping I can put the time in to really learn since this is such a small roster in comparison. Plus the only character I ever really learned (Cammy) is in.
