If you read the manga you'll know that by 2065 they figured out that Kayo's death is the origin point for the state of desolation in the future Earth. Kenya was the first one sent back by an experimental drug, but right-wing protesters destroyed the lab after that. Satoru's powers are a natural evolutionary quirk, possibly invoked by System Gaia deep inside the Earth's core as a defense mechanism when it realized humanity might not be able to save themselves.

Why would that make sense?

Is it more likely that whatever trait gave him time travel powers just spontaneously appears in random people around the planet or is it more likely that it would exist in people coming from a similar location? I think it's much more plausible that people born at similar times and in similar environments would get similar traits.

Not that I wasn't being tongue-in-cheek for the most part, but the whole 'What are the odds that so many people have abilities in one place?' argument doesn't really make sense to me.

Extending the anime to 24 episodes wouldn't solve the problems with the 2006 storyline, unless that was completely rewritten.
Big spoiler ahead for manga:

Nah, they could just let the killer win in 1988 where he actually drowns. Then do timeskips to show his other friends living happily because the murderer moved on to a new city afterwards, have his mom marry the glasses dude from this episode and be living relatively happily while they still investogate the murderer, and then have the white haired kid grow up and still be investigating it too, foreshadowing they are close to a breakthrough in the case.

Wouldn't be the happiest anime ending ever, but they could still end it well in 12.

Edit:date was off.

i hope Kenya isn't also another time traveler, because two time travelers in the same country who went to the same school is a bit too much to not make me roll my eyes

Psh, all they need is a good explanation such as... Airi's father actually being an employee of some sorts in a company/organization whose focus is to mutate humans ala Brynhildr/Charlotte except without the shit and somehow Satoru and Kenya were experimented on as babies thus TIME TRAVEL POWAS ACTIVATE.

See? Easy peasy.

But not really because then it'd be a big thing in Japan. If two people can get the time travel powers and it's a locale thing then more people should have gotten it and news wouldn't stay quiet for long. Kenya and Satoru didn't have a scene where they find a weird alien device and touched it and then it exploded therefore nobody else got time travel powers.

The way the show portrays it Satoru simply has had the powers for some time for unexplained reasons, so mutation/superpowers is the only logical thing I can think of. If him and another kid both got it in the vicinity with no outside reason as to why they got their powers it's convenient. Too convenient.

If on the other hand Satoru and a kid in Brazil both developed whatever mutation in this universe grants the time travel ability it's more plausible to me with no other explanation.

I would say so, it's also the best currently airing anime this season too to boot. There are some flawed episodes which led many to get angry over considering the first three which many of AnimeGAF considered perfect.

Eh the first episode had its highs and lows and the next three were solid.

AOTS is Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju.

Eh I couldn't care for that show the characters I was interested in ended up only being the set up for the real show, and the more I watched of the other episodes the more I realized I didn't care for the art itself (as in the acting they do) nor the characters.

Episode 7

Absolutely fantastic from beginning to end. Last week sort of began to figure out how to make the future stuff work, but this week's episode is a return to full form. Sure there are silly plot elements, like Satoru actually thinking of killing Hina's mom, but it felt believable and real to me in the moment.

I think what really sold me on the episode was the pure existential dread that permeates the whole thing. It felt like the best parts of Episode 4 all over again. Satoru's plan isn't super amazing or fool proof, but I also couldn't necessarily poke all that many holes in it. Still, there is an ever escalating sense that something is going to go majorly wrong and that just creates this wonderful tension throughout. I don't want bad things to happen to Hina, but they are all but destined to and my mind can't help but look for the signs as to where that stuff is going to come from. By the end, I was on the edge of my seat. Perfect place to put that cliffhanger and I cannot wait to see how they pay it off. It really could go either way. Obviously the show wants to make us think that the killer has traced Satoru's trail back to Hina, but it could equally be a third party coming in to break up Satoru's silly abduction plan and 'rescue' Hina, bringing her back to her parents where the bad shit can resume.

Reads like something out of a Type Moon VN.

I don't think they'll do that. I think they are going to skip a lot of the parts with the mother which would be a shame but focus more on him. I doubt they'l radically change the ending of the anime.

Just watched episodes 1-7. I like it, reminds me of Steins;Gate.

Everyone here seem to be concerned that they won't manage to pack the manga into the few episodes left. If so, maybe I should just read the manga before watching the next episodes? What do you manga readers think?

I remember reading news that both the manga and anime endings will be the same, so they will probably skip more stuff instead of changing anything major. Current chapter ->
the pacing slowed down a LOT in the last few chapters so I guess they will probably skip most of the memory loss part
.

Too bad that a lot of the complaints are about things thare were omitted or changed from the source. Things like ( manga changes -> )
him appearing somewhere he wasn't supposed to do, ignoring Hiromi, painting on the wall or what he trid to do to Kayo's mother
, and other stuff.

I noticed a tiny thing that was lost in translation: when Yuuki gets excited about Kayo getting friends, the subtitles say that he slipped a swear word, but in japanese he actually speaks in his natural accent that he hides all the time to not come out as a country boy in the city. Both work fine, but I find it interesting anyway.

Don't know where you read that concern outside of the first few pages when we didn't know, but the Manga creator already said the Anime will end where the Manga ends.

So the teacher is obviously the killer right? I can't think of anyone they introduced that fits the bill, unless it's totally out of the left field.

I started to watch this just because I saw some pictures of it and I thought it looked interesting and the animation looked pretty nice... then I became obsessed with the story I had to read the manga.

I'm not going to comment about the story because I tend to mix the manga and the anime and I may probably spoil someone if I do. All I can say is that I prefer the anime because I think it has the right pace for each episode, some chapters of the manga are unnecessary long in my opinion, although right now it feels as if a couple of episodes more would be needed to show everything without putting too many things into one episode.

I think with a bit of smart remixing the anime will be fine. We should see some of that in the next couple of episodes. I think 3 episodes will be enough for the finale arc, so this one has to end in ep9. 2 episodes for the finale might be pushing it a bit but still doable.

Stumbled into this after randomly seeing online that Re: Re: was being used as an opening for something (it's mildly terrifying to think about just how old that album is now). Sounds pretty cool. Might actually fire it up and get some use out of the Crunchyroll subscription I practically never use.

It's been a very worthwhile trip so far, enjoy!

Oh and watch Konosuba on Crunchy as well for some good comedy to balance thongs out.

So is this show any good?

It's the best anime since Steins;Gate IMO.

By the way, they skipped [MANGA SPOILERS]
Satoru's flashback, when he saved the little girl from the killer and remember seeing his eyes in the past.
I hope that doesn't mean that the killer's background chapter will be skipped, it is easily one of the best and most shocking chapters of the manga
.

Hey guys, this worth giving a watch?

Also, what do you think are the best new anime this season on crunchy roll?

Yes worth a watch.

KonoSuba is also good for humor (and explosions)

Dagashi Kashi for humor, japanese sweets and if you like them, waifus

Dimension W is okay even though they are skipping 75% of the manga, has sexy robot girl and bullying - i like it

Edit: If you like KyoAni you can give Musaigen no Phantom World a chance. Also has some waifu bait.

This season is not that good, but I hope you are ready for April:

Soma Season 2
Phoenix Wright
Boku no Hero Academia
Flying Witch
Big Order
JoJo Season 4
Koutetsujou no Kabaneri
Re:Zero Kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu

And more

Yeah, Erased is really good,

Konosuba is good as well on Crunchy

Phantom World is alright

Undefeated Bahamut is OK

but there is a crap-ton of older stuff on Crunchy that is amazing.

That was an interesting episode. One of the good ones and the story progressed a lot. And even if there was no doubt at this point, the killer's identity is all but confirmed in this episode. And of course, it was the teacher and they didn't really try to hide it this episode. We're 4 episodes until the end, so things can turn really bad for Kayo now, considering how Satoru's mom trusts him.

Some great moments on this episode. Pretty much all the scenes with Kayo in Satoru's house were full of emotions. And Satoru's mom is just the best.

And about the cliffhangers, it really sucks how they cut some things. The opening scene was pretty tense and I feel it would make a far better ending than the one we got at the last episode.

Lol at Kayo's mother though. At this point, I think she's so over the top that she's a bit of a joke character...

Mom, Mom, I love you!! Best fu(king mom ever; right up there with Sanae. What an amazing episode from start to finish; seriously great stuff. I'm at a loss for words here, it was just what I wanted to happen next and perfectly done. The part on the futons with Sataru's mom "being in the way" of Kayo was hilarious. Even the ending, no real cliffhanger there; we know exactly what she is there to do...

Unfortunately I wish she was a unrealistic joke evil character. But I've dealt with a few people who were unstable like that. She made me uncomfortable in how realistic her portrayal is.

She's mentally messed up and that is so sad.

I sometimes miss these little things, but do we have a list of things against him at this point to prove he is the killer? Wouldn't Satoru know that by seeing him in the future?

I don't think he's taken a good look at the future killer. Only some glances so far. And it's been 20 years so it's not impossible he didn't recognize him.

Despite all the problems I have with this show at times, I cannot deny that the core of the Satoru/Mom/Hinazuki relationship is great. I teared up a little.

I gotta say, while the bathtub scene was tropey in nature, it was done with excellent taste and was heartwarming at it's core. Kayo needs a little love and positive attention and Satoru's mom know that....

Then breakfast came..... my goodness, I loved the way they drew that....

I was waiting for something terrible to happen the entire episode. Glad it didn't.

At this point I think the teacher is just a red herring. The "clues" are too obvious.

That episode was amazing, 11/10. I'm definitely going to put it up there in the top 3 episodes thus far. I smiled, I laughed, I teared up at the ending when Satoru's mom was giving Kayo the motherly love she hasn't been able to experience in awhile (if ever).

Some of those scenes were just so well animated. They know how to make use of little movements to make the scene; like when they arrived back at Sataru's house and Kayo flinched and locked up thinking his mother would hit somebody when her hand raised up, or really when Kayo broke out crying at the end how they used such little animation while still managing to make it a super powerful scene.
