HTC Vive is $799, ships early April 2016

Definitely agree they should have mentioned it before hand, but I suspect they are following the same as other products that do not disclose the shipping costs.

From my experience, roomscale is hands down worth the premium. Non-forward facing experiences with hand controllers is where it is most definitely at. Its absolutely intoxicating. That works across seated, standing and roomscale but isn't something other headsets are focusing on. Standing and preferably walking even a little is so powerful vs stationary seated. 5ftx6.5ft is the minimum for roomscale, which I think is fairly doable with some shuffling for many, but the 360 focus is still there for standing and seated thankfully

do you know if you can arrange the lighthouses in a wider area but use a smaller area for gaming?

In my home setup, the PC is in a separate alcove which might just about be enough for standing, but is definitely where I'll do any sitting games. But for room scale (small), I'd need to be in the other half of the room. So ideally I'd have the lighthouses set up to cover the overall area.

The pages for some of the games on Steam now list the play area size requirements which is nice (I don't believe they did before?)

Is what i'm seeing for Fantastic Contraption, Job Simulator, and Space Pirate Trainer, and The Legend of Luca.

Which is roughly 6.5 x 5 feet. Pretty sizable requirement.

Yeah, or will they let you know if you're in the April batch? Since mine said April I'd assume it's April.

Where do they list a ship date? Neither invoice or confirmation email say anything about it. I don't think the generic announcement info bullet point of "we will start shipping in April" is order # based, or specific.

Have you ever tried reaching Digital River customer service on any of the store sites they run, let alone tried to get a refund? They literally are one of the worst companies in America in my opinion and I would not be surprised if people that try to cancel get charged anyway or never even get a response to their requests. As such, I would only preorder if you are 100% sure you want the Vive.

As long as we are sharing stories about Digital River US - I had pre-ordered a MegaMan helmet from Capcom and it was lost in post. I contacted Capcom after waiting a week and a half, they said they would escalate to Digital River to confirm shipment. Waited another 2 weeks, heard nothing back, but poof, got all my money back in my PayPal. All in all happy with how it turned out, the helmet was very much an impulse buy and in retrospect, way too expensive.

Sure as long as the room is within maximum spec for lighthouse it shouldnt be any issue I would think. I should cover the whole area as long as you have the sensors positioned correctly.

I am thinking that HTC has too much to lose over this going bad over ordering logistics. I would hope to think we do not have anything to worry about.

Considering HTC is a pretty decent sized company with significant manufacturing resources, it's entirely possible that everyone ordering for now will be eating on day 1.

I guess we'll see!

Fuck, I should have put my work address as the shipping address. They're requiring signatures when it ships and I won't be at my house... Hoping I can change the shipping address.

Yeah that is kind of a question i'm going to have to resolve for myself too. Pretty sure if I set them up to cover both scenarios i'm going to get some occlusion in the large play space. Might have to use Oculus for sit down and Vive for room scale.

Pre-ordered... now to freeze myself until delivery

The space near my PC is about 5ft x 5ft. Was hoping that'd be enough for standing games like Job Simulator, but seems not.

The space near to my PC is about 5ft x 7ft so even that is quite tight for 'small' room scale. Not much I can do to reconfigure without removing the sofa entirely.

I'd need to disconnect my PC, lug it to the living room, push the sofa/coffee table/dining table to the back of the room to have a nice sized space to walk around. Might do that once or twice when the family isn't there, but it wouldn't be a regular thing. Maybe hire a church hall or something :)

You can always call the shipping company and ask to have them hold it at the regional center and pick it up from there. At least that is how it is in the States for UPS,USPS, and FEDEX. I had to deal with this all of the time when I lived in my condo, its not a big deal.

Put wheels on your furniture...

So torn between this and the Rift.

On the one hand, I would prefer to support Valve over Facebook. But on the other - I read opinion pieces that say the Rift fits easier on the head versus the Vive - and that seems like a big deal.

Did I just commit a big mistake buying this while I have a 21:9 3440x1440p monitor?
Or will I just have to use a 1080p resolution? :D

Sub-Total: 973.42 €.

Ehm, ok, maybe next time, uh?

No seriously, that's really too much for me.
I guess i'll skip VR for now, as much as i wanted to try it, it's really impossible to justify that expense for something that may very well be obsolete in 2 years (especially with stuff like eye tracking around the corner).

It has nothing to do with your desktop monitor's resolution. They're completely separate display devices.

I have my preorder in, but I honestly can't decide between this and Rift. I have plenty of room in my apartment for Vive, so that's not the issue, but I am just not sure what will offer the better combination of performance and game/app support.

Uh the lighthouses will work for sit down regardless of where you put them.

hmm. HMM.

Visuals similar (but better FOV on the vive). Comfort sounds concerning, especially as I suffered attempting to ever make a Sony HMZ-T1 comfortable (hint - its impossible), so I know how important comfort can be.

Alright, so I now have a Vive and a Rift pre-ordered. Not sure which to keep, which to cancel.

I guess the Oculus exclusives are the only thing keeping me wanting to go with Oculus, but there aren't that many.

Notch went on reddit after his tweeting about Oclus and Vive and did mention

And since I'm trying hard to be self aware here, uh, I should confess that the seated Vive experience is kind of terrible. You have to reset the room area for it to work properly, and move the cameras around. That might be a problem with how my desktop is set up, but it's definitely something I keep running into.

I think in the short term I may just use tripods to make them easier to move around.

Digital river was the worst idea ever for a product launch like this. If there aren't issues with shipping, order changes and cancellations and what not I'll eat a cactus.

I'll give then kudos for the site not imploding though. Oculus couldn't do that.

Someone on reddit said there was an option to choose standard delivery instead of express, which changed the delivery cost to UK from £57 to £5.

Express was the only option when I tried. Anyone else?

same - I preordered through steam (Which seemed to link to digital river anyway) and there was only express delivery.

They aren't going to adjust the pre-order date from April because they say pre orders are shipping according to pre-order confirmation time. That is accurate for everyone. It's different from Rift which worded it differently "Expected March" etc. You could order now and be in June shipment and the Vive pre-order page would not be lying.

Yep, at least Oculus could give an estimate.

But I'm predicting that these won't go that fast as the Rift considering the abomination of a price. 899€ was still "ok it's damn expensive but maybe worth it" but 990€? HTC pls.

FUCK.

I had no idea this was processing through Digital River. Hope I don't have issues cancelling if I decide to go with Rift.

I got my order in at about 9:05am CST.

I just realized my debit card that I used for payment method expires 04/16.

Am I gonna get screwed?

Only Express for me to Italy, 70€

Not that i would risk a cheap shipping with something like this
