So tempted to drop my Oculus Preorder for a Vive. But I really want to play Eve Valkyrie, and from everything I can find it sounds like it's still exclusive to Oculus on PC for now.

The VIVE would certainly be easier to set up in my condo vs having to run wires everywhere for the Oculus tracking cameras. Decisions, decisions.

Someone fill in for a noob.

Without considering the price:

Vive or Rift?

Why "your selection"?

Which hardware has the most support as of now?

But the Vive has two cameras and the Rift has one.

If you have the room, Vive. While I have yet to experience it the room scale tracking is supposed to be a really special feature. May as well get a taste of it early if you can.

Can anyone confirm if they charge you now or wait until shipping? I ordered with my debit card which doesn't have enough at this time.

Wait until they are in the market. Most people haven't tried the consumer versions, and the ones who tried only in super short demos in conventions. They don't even know the launch software.

Consider yourself filled in.

They still need power doe.

They do, but not having to tether them to your PC means you have more options where you can deploy your VR "space". I'd like to use my VR headset in my living room, but my PC is just outside it in my den/office area. With Vive I can just have the one wire snaking over my couch and be done. With Oculus, I have to run 3 wires all the way around the perimeter of my living room so I can place the cameras for the headset and each controller in addition to the wire snaking over the couch.

If I get Oculus, I will likely just use it in front of my computer, which is a much smaller space sadly.

My take is that oculus has the lighter headset and better games at launch. Negatives of the rift one sensor which may impact full room experiences and need to purchase motion controllers later on.

Vive headset is a lttle heavier and may not be positioned as well as the rift. The launch games aren't as strong as the rift. The vive may offer more with the full room experience and vr experience since it has two sensors and two vr controllers and a little lighter on the hardware requirements.

So my take is this rift is the better headset for sitting down gaming with controllers. Vive will probably be better for moving arms or standing. Both headset displays are nearly identical. Vive may have a longer initial lifespan since it has some adopted features that rift may include in next gen headset.

Polished experience = Rift

Potential better experience = Vive

I see. Mostly depends about everybodies personal room set up. I have OCD so this is actually a big deal for me as well.

Well.. I couldn't decide so I pre-ordered both.. :(

Anyway, Vive has better tracking sensors and two motion controllers included in the pack, but Rift is cheaper (basically because motion controllers will be sold separately, so it comes with a standard Xbox One controller) and has better lighter HMD design and audio headsets included.

Edit: The Vive also has a forwarding facing camera that augments various ways to interact and navigate in the real world without the need to take off the HMD.

One thing that quite concerns me about the Vive is that outside of Elite Dangerous, there doesn't seem to be many, if any confirmed sim games getting support for the Vive. I'm thinking of games like Project Cars and DiRT Rally.

The reason I haven't cancelled the Rift yet is because it feels like it has more support and more support from the larger companies. Now, that may be a result of the fact that Oculus has had DK1 and DK2 out in the wild for a long time and less to do with much else, but it's something I can't quite get out of my head. The Vive and its controllers and tracking look incredible - but it just feels like the Rift is the safer bet for the near future. Someone tell me I'm being stupid, because I think I want the Vive more but there is so much uncertainty around the software that I feel like it is riskier.

I think more has to do that Dev kits haven't been around as long as oculus. Vr games for cars and stuff will map over just give it some time. Honestly you can probably get both see which you value more and sell one and not be any worse off.

This is such a complicated question that is hard to just fill someone in simply. I'd Google " Vive vs Rift" and you'll find a lot of good info. However, here are my answers:

I'm getting both.

Both have strengths and a lot is still unknown. Vive is much more exciting though because of room scale.

It seems as though the Rift has a few exclusives because of money hatting to ensure at least timed exclusivity although they claim that they will not stop people from modding games to work on other hardware and other hardware may be able to use the Oculus site in the future. Vive has temporary exclusivity to all room scale experiences until the Oculus Touch comes out.

How big of a room do you need to make full use of the vive? The room my PC is in is like an average sized bedroom, but with lots of stuff in it(my bed and a drumset mainly)

Is oculus touch going to include another sensor? Because if not could get tricky quick.

Someone on reddit said there was an option to choose standard delivery instead of express, which changed the delivery cost to UK from £57 to £5.

Express was the only option when I tried. Anyone else?
Did anyone else get cheap shipping? I'm wondering if it's because this guy is in NI (I don't know if he is) and the Vives are coming from Ireland.

The Rift has had 3 years of building up grassroots developer and enthusiast support. Over 300,000 DK1 and DK2 are in the hands of devs and enthusiasts right now. No one should be surprised that the Vive suddenly showing up out of nowhere and shipping 7,000 devkits out doesn't have the same level of support.

So are there any demos or something I should be watching to get hyped for Vive?

Kinda regretting ordering now after hearing Notch's complaints about seated experiences, considering I am mostly getting it for racing and space sims. Also, the launch window seems super barren for games. It doesn't give me much hope that the coolest thing available is called "Job Simulator"

This demo video just came out today for AudioShield, which absolutely blew me away at SteamVR's late-January press event. Really cool mix of human movement and VR content, sells the concept very, very well.

I went with Rift becasue it has more games in the pipeline that interest me - seated hardcore experiences.

The other problem I see with RoomScaleVR is that, you need alot of space (which I dont have) and the games that use it seem to be all stationary/gimmicky experiences with a novelty factor that will wear off fast just like Wii / Kinect stuff.
I also think Rift´s TouchVR controllers are the better concept over Vive´s large bulky sticks.

Currently the Rift seems to have more/better support overall - and it has Carmack!
There is also a cheap solution (around 30$ with shipping) to add Vive like features to the Rift: LeapMotion https://youtu.be/PA5nKnAk1t8?t=7m

I think long term, most content will be on both. I know the Vorpx guys are planning to port over to Vive, but they didn't get a dev kit, so it may be awhile as they are in line with everyone else.
As long as they don't get too proprietary in hardware, especially controllers, then I don't think fragmentation will be too much of an issue. PSVR is the one wild card in that. Any future third party headsets will probably either be Vive or Rift Compatible.

If you even have $1000 on hand to buy either one... WAIT. Wait until the reviews hit and there is some content on the market. Be a smart buyer. Don't be early adopter!

I went with the Rift, because:

1) It has a strong launch lineup, of both exclusives and other supported games
2) I'm sure it's going to win by numbers, so future support is guaranteed
3) Oculus is the brand / company I've been following for a long time
4) John Carmack and Michael Abrash have been working on it
5) We can watch anime together in VR with Palmer Luckey
6) Touch looks like a nice controller
7) Comfort and ergonomics
8) Vive price over here is bonkers, especially with 90€ shipping

Like I said before I'll be getting Vive too most likely, but Rift was always my first choice.
I'm ready to buy a 3 or 4 camera setup if room scale requires that.

And I'm going to buy PSVR too.

That's the thing with preordering is we just don't know yet and maybe won't for a while. Oculus has been getting kits out for a lot longer than HTC/Valve so will of course have a head start on software. Games like Project cars already had support for Oculus DK2. It's just impossible to project how this will look 6 months or a year from now.

This console like exclusitvity crap is really making a mess of things and hopefully the community can come through with a solution.

So I currently have a Rift on preorder (debating cancelled and sitting both out for a while, as a DK2 owner) but what makes you so convinced of #2? Online I get the sense the Vive is the more popular option amongst gamers which I'm sure will be a large percentage of the early adopters for both platforms.

I think I saw an actual graph somewhere that showed that the Rift was overwhelmingly more "popular" amongst potential buyers.

Really? I thought the Rift was the more popular choice among gamers at this points. Who knows, though. All anecdotal.

I see no reason for me to get the Rift over Vive, I have the space for room scale and I have a feeling many of the 'exclusives' are just timed and will make their way over to the Vive at some point down the road.

Is there any reason I couldn't run a long hdmi cable and a usb cable (with active extension cables or hubs to extend the length) to another room and keep my PC in the room it is currently in? I really don't want to move my desktop from where it's at and will probably be using the Oculus for most sit down experiences so having the Vive ready to go in another room would be ideal. I've been trying to think of reasons that it wouldn't work, but aside from some inconvenience initially launching games it seems like it would work fine.

I toyed with the idea of just building a separate desktop for the Vive, but that would be such a waste for use only with the Vive.

I ordered the vive to be safe from retribution. I predict anyone launching steam wearing a cv rift is going to see gaben's angry face for a fraction of a second, then their heads will explode.

I know this is a vive thread, but one thing I'm curious about the OR - can you mount the camera anywhere or will I have to pull it out and put it in front of my monitor when I play? eg can I mount it on a shelf above my monitor looking down on me?
