Anyone have a good way to keep the lighthouses up without wall damage?

I'm trying to find out what brand of 3M tape was used here:
https://twitter.com/OwlchemyLabs/status/689235996160856066

You can always stand them on something like a shelf rather than mount them.

If you want something flexible and easy to tidy, go for Light Stands. You can grab 2x pretty easily and cheap vs tripods etc. - http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00MXX3TZA/

Mounting adapters shouldn't be too hard to find either

6.5 FT high is recommended for the lighthouses though

Above head height is perfectly fine.

yes. Preordered a vive just in case. Getting my Rift for free so its less of a difficult situation, but that Vive money woudl buy a nice pascal GPU upgrade, or a nice HOTAS *and* steering wheel setup..

Still on the fence but that reddit thread I posted has me a little more positive on the potential of the Rift for room scale/motion tracking when touch comes out.

Not sure whether to cancel the vive and just stick it out with the OR, or get both, spend a couple of weeks with both and see which I prefer for comfort/ease of use etc, and then sell one.

I figure I'll cover my costs. I did the same with a Sony HMZ-t1 a few years ago. Bought it used, played with it for a few weeks, then sold it on for what I paid for it. That was an uncomfortable bastard :P

Quite a few people have tried the Occulus touch demo and they all seem pretty positive about the tracking? I'm not aware of any bad demos or issues with tracking...but if there are it would be good to know.

I am still tempted by the Occulus over the Vive - I just have a niggling worry about room tracking now. But Occulus have demo'd it - so not sure why I'm worried...hmmm.

It's going to be really tempting to flip one of the sets for cash. Both devices are going to be back ordered into well the summer (maybe even fall for Rift) come launch. I love this crap too much though, wouldn't be able to bring myself to it.

But any of you with both devices pre-ordered in early batches that are planning on canceling one of your orders would probably be wise to hold on to it if you know what I mean lol.

Thanks I think I found some good light stands. A developer has been using 3M sticky strips without a problem so i'm going to push for those before stands.

Yeah I wish I could buy in for one now but it's just not feasible. You've got the right idea though, enjoy the strengths of both for a spell and then toss the one that isn't holding your attention the most. I still got a feeling though that Valve is working on some decently-sized room scale game that will blow away a lot of the other offerings. A man can dream.

how about handy battery packs that'll be compatible with the lighthouses? I think one of mine would be close to a socket, but the other would need a long wire so a rechargeable battery pack could be an option if the lighthouses aren't power hogs.

sounds like you're thinking irrotationally ;)

so what? Realistically it won't be out in the next six months, and Valve have already said they'll support the chaperone system on OR so any 'motion required' game they might release is almost guaranteed to support an OR+Touch setup too.

we're really all just fussing too much over the 1% like we always do :)

I decided not to order one after listening to some reasonable opinions about waiting for software on the Beastcast.

I'll take that money and reserve the Tesla next month instead!

I've been looking at my DXRacer chair in anticipation of getting the Vive, and ultimately returning to stress free Elite, and I think I've worked out a way to mount my X52 to it by removing the arm rests. Hrm...

Has anybody else encountered the problem that you cant pass the "Billing Information"...

i cant pre order it :( - no matter how many times i try to order, it just loops the site, without any error or notification ...

I'll be curious to see what they can pull off with the front facing camera and how useful it will be in practice. At its most basic, combining pass through video with Bluetooth phone support, makes staying in VR a lot easier without feeling completely isolated or shut off during longer play sessions. Since your visual and auditory systems are completely engaged by the headset, it would be nice to know if you have an emergency phone call or even if you are just waiting for a call or text you don't have to worry about missing it and keep pulling off your headset to check.

For room scale, if you have pets or kids or anything else that can't always be accounted for it will be pretty nice to get alerts so nobody gets hurt. Even just seeing the outline of what's actually at your boundary will be nice to get a sense of your position in the room while you're essentially moving around blindfolded.

Oh I'm not fussing that much, I've actually felt checked out of VR in general recently, more of I wish I could get x thing now that pre orders are available etc. I chalk it up to the conditioning Oculus started in me since the KS xD

Gotta have new VR thing!

Decided to reserve a Vive just in case. Not going to get both the Vive and Oculus, but I may very well get one and the PSVR, depending on how expensive that turns out to be.

Still hesitant because I really want to play EVE:Valkyrie with maximum prettiness, but I really like the pack-in controllers and general tracking setup of the Vive so much better.

I love how $799 ends up being the best part of £700 in the UK. I know there are taxes etc... but holy fucking hell.

I manage to cobble together a VR Ready PC in the hopes that they were not going to be more then £300-£400 and that dream is well and truly dead.

Fuckity fuck fuck.

I guess I'm either going to get a PSVR and hope that some bright spark can mod it to work on PC's or wait for some cheap Chinese knock off.

PSVR will never work with pc, I expect.
And to be fair, the UK price of Vive, accounting for tax isn't bad
The shipping is some legit bullshit, vou that's to be expected unfortunately :(

Took the plunge. Will need a new desktop but I'll probably wait till the new GPUs launch to build it. Laptop looks like it can handle the lower demand stuff, just barely outside green on the benchmark. Have a nice space available as well.

Got my Vive today. It's the developer Pre version so I don't know if there's a difference between that and the one that went up for pre-order today but it's an incredible piece of tech.
I have the Rift DK1 and DK2 but haven't tried the consumer model yet so that's all I can compare against but the tracking and speed at which it does so is highly impressive. You really feel like you're standing in the space shown. The controllers are also a little weird to look at and hold at first but they work surprisingly well, the tutorial setup had me smacking balloons around and I was blown away bu how accurate it was.
It takes a while to set everything up with the base stations and all that jazz but after that the interface and getting games up and running is really easy and smooth, after the nightmare that was the DK2 anything would look good though I guess.

Very impressed with it

Why not. It's essentially just a display device.

Sounds great. What are you going to do with it?

can you make a statement on the fov and SDE ? Thanks.

I hope for all of you that there will be some good content out. Don't want that $800 piece of technology to gather dust.

The content is actually the only thing keeping me from buying it.

Job Simulator isn't enough.

I can't believe I'll have this in my hands in about a month. I haven't been able to stop thinking about it since I tried it last Fall. Such an amazing experience.

Something is wrong with me.. I'm getting this and the Rift and I have an S7 Edge coming for Gear VR.. Damn VR is expensive as fuck...

If it plugs into an additional processing unit, it might have some proprietary connector. It might not be DisplayPort or HDMI.

But that processing box connects via HDMI and USB. In theory if you provided the processing box with the correctly formatted information, it would work. Question is whether anyone figures that out.

Isn't OSVR supposed to be a more affordable option?

I have both preordered but I am getting only one (just can't decide which). Not sure if there's much value in getting both, tbh.

Right now I don't really know, there's not a whole lot out to play on it right now sadly. That Audioshield game posted above looks neat though. I'm just gonna dick around in the performance test thing. Windlands is pretty fun with it too :)

Not sure what SDE is, care to elaborate?
FOV is pretty good, better than the Rifts anyway but it's not all encompassing either. For me it's enough to convince me I'm in the space I'm playing in though and after a while you forget you're in a room, the tracking and presence is that good
EDIT: Oh wait, Screen Door Effect? Duh!! haha. It's still there but to a far lesser degree. It's not nearly as distracting, unless you're looking for it you wouldn't really take notice while playing

Well it is actually cheaper than what the direct conversion to £ + 20% VAT should be thanks to Brexit fun.

Edit - actually the £ is stronger than the other day, so now: $799 = £573.95 + 20% VAT = £688.74 >> so you pay an excess of 26p

The big problem for most is the shipping fees which naturally are an arse no matter which headset you want in the UK right now

Screen-door effect. Pretty noticeable in the DK1 especially.

The other comment I've heard about the Vive is that it's possible to see the fresnel lenses if they don't sit right on your head. i.e. You might seem some blurry arches or something in your vision.

I was a backer for the Oculus DK1 years ago, and I've got a free CV1 headset coming sometime in April.
I told myself that the Rift was already enough, and that I wouldn't need this.
I fucking told myself.
I wouldn't need this.

£750, just like that.

Reports are that the Vive is slightly heavier than Oculus CV1. How heavy/comfortable does it feel compared to the old DKs? And does it feel like something that would get unseated, or uncomfortable over time?

It is slightly heavier, nothing hugely noticeable though. It would get uncomfortable after about an hour of playing with it but I imagine that's only from all the constant moving around, the Rift was more comfortable cos I was sitting down just moving my head instead of moving my whole body. Then again I could probably tweak it a bit more to fit my face and slide less.

Side note I tried out the Aperture Robot Repair demo and my mind is blown. To see the Atlas and Glados right there in front of you is hard to describe, you get a very real sense of the size of them and the little details were very impressive. It's incredibly convincing
