It is slightly heavier, nothing hugely noticeable though. It would get uncomfortable after about an hour of playing with it but I imagine that's only from all the constant moving around, the Rift was more comfortable cos I was sitting down just moving my head instead of moving my whole body. Then again I could probably tweak it a bit more to fit my face and slide less.

Side note I tried out the Aperture Robot Repair demo and my mind is blown. To see the Atlas and Glados right there in front of you is hard to describe, you get a very real sense of the size of them and the little details were very impressive. It's incredibly convincing

I believe what i will ask of you is something lots of ppl want to know, so:

- Can you please try to use it in Windows with Virtual Desktop and describe the SDE using an OS enviroment ? Text readability etc ?

Thanks for the report, much appreciated.

Hopefully the Vive isn't too heavy for extended use, because I want to VR it up in space for hours.

Wonder if there will be any room to do "racing mods" on these to make them lighter - drilling out unnecessary parts, etc.

Yeah for text based stuff or plain white backgrounds the SDE is pretty obvious. Text is still legible but not great either. Again I don't know if the Vive Pre is different to the one being sold today.

Thanks for the report, much appreciated.

I'm sure it would become tolerable, especially something like elite dangerous or similar games where you're not exactly jumping around the room.

I'm watching this video right now that was released today and it's doing a pretty good job of explaining the features and benefits of the Vive along with impressions on a bunch of demos. Check it out:

This is a great vid showcasing room scale VR, thanks for posting. I wasn't even interested in room scale in the beginning because I knew I would never have a space for it to work, but now it seems like pinnacle of what VR has to offer and I hope for a chance to try it one day soon.

I can't get over that cable though, it seems like a real hazard with serious potential for disaster. I'm sure we'll see some videos like when the Wii came out and people were destroying their TVs and their loved ones.

I wore it for half hour. I probably wil have wear it for hours if it belongs to me

The experience is amazing. I tried several demos, including that scary vr experience "Sister".

My favourite is space pirate VR. its a simple and basic shooter game, but i love how you can equip shield and dual wield weapons etc

One thing to remember about comfort impressions based on Vive Pre is that the strap setup is actually one of the few things which changed between the Pre and the final model.

I could maybe see people swapping out the head strap for a different setup. Maybe something more along the lines of the PSVR halo headstrap. Though not sure if either of the main PC-VR headsets have removable straps to make that possible. That might be a feature of the second iteration of these devices.

Uhg, do I really need to install stuff on the ceiling for this to function? I can't just whip out the room sensors when needed and place them on furniture? I had a hell of a time convincing my girlfriend to let install a 5.1 system, so these vive-only sensors will be a no-go if necessary .

No, they don't have to be on the ceiling, just in a position where at least one of them can see each controller at all times.

They can be on top of anything as long as they can see each other and the headset/controllers.

I can tell the folks here who are four-eyed like me, you guys will love the Vive more. The Rift has absolutely no room for glasses inside while the Vive does. The Vive Pre we have at the studio is just comfy as heck.

Thought some said it was the other way around.

This isn't true.

Knowing that the Oculus had been designed to allow people to wear their glasses within the headset – I decided to test that, putting on an HMD wearing my large framed glasses for the first time ever. It felt comfortable on the face, I didn’t sense that my lenses were scratching against the lenses of the headset at all – an important factor for sure.

Yeah, that's not true from all hands-on accounts I've read/heard. The Rift even supposedly has a special replacement foam insert with extra room for glasses. Thing you have to remember - Palmer Luckey wears glasses sometimes, so he made sure it would be comfortable.

yup my computers ready, and the vives preordered.

Unless you can adjust how close the lenses are to your face, UploadVR here is wrong. I know because I've tried to fit in my small glasses and they were basically pushing up against my nose when I tried out the CV1 for the Rift at a local meetup here. Hell, the people demoing told me to take me off my glasses and I insisted I wanted to wear it.

Again, we don't have the Rift dev kit at work, only the Vive Pre at the studio and I have the Vive DK1 at home.

Maybe I'm just use to the amount of space the Vive gives you inside the headset.

Oculus during Oculus Connect 2 while talking about the headset mentioned they did take into account a variety of different of style of glasses and shapes to really try to accommodate most everyone. They also have the interchangeable inserts that change the layout of the surface that touches your face and those may help people with glasses.

They're wrong about their personal experience with the unit?

Well there ya go :p

lol I guess I'll find out at the end of March whether my four-eyed self is satisfied with the amount of space they give you for the Rift.

I think one thing we can all agree on is come late March/early April all our wallets will be crying. lol

I really wish I can show you guys some of the new stuff they added in the dev repository for the Vive. Lots of new demos and such coming from developers sharing what they've been working on.

Might be a longshot, but anyone in SoCal have an Vive Pre?

I'd really like to try it out before launch if possible. Free food/drinks on offer. :)

I had a DK2, but want to see all the great improvements these headsets have made in the past year.

Are these demos something consumers will be able to get their grubby mitts on or do we need to know the secret developer handshake? :p

No. You can just prop them up on a bookshelf or invest in low-cost stands. You don't need to make permanent fixtures for them. That's just what this guy did.

This is something I'm wondering about too. My kids and I are eagerly awaiting trying the Portal short tech demo since we are huge Portal fans. I'm hoping they won't be lost to us.

Hey I wish my wallet could hurt some more for the Vive but no dice atm, gonna have to read all you cool kids' accounts of losing your shit when you get it, seems like you're ahead of the game there though :)

Really interested in trying out Budget Cuts myself.

Haha There's demos you know of in the repository and some that haven't been revealed yet. Even us devs aren't sure whether these demos will make it to the wider public. Would love for them to actually go out there, but I think many devs are afraid too of getting early bad impressions from consumers. A lot of the stuff is really experimental which is not a surprise since we're all just trying to see what works in VR.

I can tell you guys Hover Junkers has been a crapton of fun. I've been playing it a lot. Wholly recommend it to anyone getting the Vive here.

Argh, sooooooooo can't wait for April. Man, I'm borderline giddy at the prospect, and we've got ~5 weeks left to go. Lol

Edit: I'm really envious of you guys (developers) sometimes. :)

Haven't read up much on hover junkers, but I've seen clips in a fair many of the vive vids on YouTube. Looks pretty neat, tho.

Maybe that's the problem? People trying it without knowing of/replacing the foam insert to the glasses type?

These are what i've seen recommended. There might be cheaper braced floor to ceiling poles out there. Haven't done a ton of research yet.

That's kinda expensive...

I found these 7ft light stands that should work, two of them for $26: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B001WB02Z4/?tag=neogaf0e-20

I don't know how sturdy they are but if you are placing them out of the way in the corners of your room it shouldn't be an issue I'd think.

saved. i might go for something like that, but they're 2x as much. Still I could paint these a light color and they'd blend better...hmm.

yea this could work too. just a question of how big the bases are.

Good video. He shares my sentiments.

I tried the Vive shortly after trying PSVR, and the room scale (and controllers) were a game changer. I remember that portal demo and it was the coolest thing. When all the walls open up, you say "wow". Also you get a sense of how big the characters are. They seem smallish in portal 2, but that 1 character, and glados seems HUGE in VR. It's crazy. And I had the same reaction from the first robot, a bit nervous from its presense.

I really want a Vive, but I don't have a good PC, and it costs $1150 in Canada. I'll likely get a PSVR to tide me over, but I know it won't be the same.

Well I just placed a preorder after watching that video. Made me a believer in room scale VR.

Now off to cancel the rift preorder.

I'm glad you all enjoyed the video!

Before today, I didn't know too much about the Vive apart from technical specs, so was just searching for info this morning. That video definitely sold me on it's potential for cool experiences and applications. I could play around in Tiltbrush for hours.

You need to put a warning on that video for people who are prone to anxiety, new to VR and just preordered a Vive... I'm not going to sleep very well these next couple weeks.

Thanks a lot dude. SMH

It seems now that also for Austria delivery is starting in May. So I assume they're done with the first batch also in Europe.

is there any good video showing how it works when you need to walk a long distance (that is much larger then your room) that isn't a teleport gun?

No, and that is something I really want to see. In the barnacles video you do see the warning wall pop up quite a lot as he looks to have a smaller space than the more controlled demo rooms

A very impressive demo. The best one I've seen yet.

Folks that don't think VR is going to be a game changer should watch this video.

Yeah, which isn't a problem (it is a very good solution) but I want to be able to use smaller room and be able to walk, like something that freezes your character so you can turn around and start walking again.
