An attempt to have a relatable Everyman character while at the same time having an easily marketable ( and unfortunately problematic) character archetype I imagine.

The bolded makes no sense. It's basically standard time to release a trailer. Some big movies even go way earlier, even if they have nothing to show (LOOKING AT YOU, FANTASTIC BEASTS)
 
As someone who just recently saw the original Ghostbusters, I don't have nostalgia attached to the IP like most of you have. And what I can say is that this looks good.
 
It's so progressive that the black one is the "street smart" one while the white one's are scientists.

Glad we've gotten past racial stereotypes.

I thought that was a really good trailer. Better than I expected actually. Some of the jokes did fall flat but overall it was good.

Kate McKinnon looks like the stand out character to me. Most of her scenes were the most enjoyable. McCarthy and Wiig did ok but nothing too special and Leslie Jones, unfortunately, seems to be the token black character. Hopefully she doesn't come acorss like that in the entire film but this trailer didn't do much in that regard.

I'm looking forward to it.
 
The look and feel of it seems right, but the humor was awful in the trailer. Hopefully that isn't the case in the full movie but right now I'm only mildly interested.
 
Meh.

This first thing that struck me was how cheap it all looks. The film quality and special effects look like they were done in a Walmart photolab. None of the characters seemed to stand out, though the way they introduced the black lady seemed really odd given the fact that the rest of the cast was all white. It was like: look DIVERSITY! I guess that might have worked in the first movie, but it looks really hamfisted with the way they did it in the trailer.
 
I will say the fact that they didn't show a lot of Kate McKinnon leaves me excited. I got just enough taste.

Upon a rewatch, they're leaning a bit too hard on gross-out/slapstick that the first movie barely touched on. Still, there's some stuff that I enjoyed in there too. I laughed at "GET OUT OF MY FRIEND, GHOST!"

Nailed it. I just watched both of the originals since they are back on Amazon Prime, and this new one looks much goofier in tone.

Not that the originals are serious movies, but they play it somewhat straight. The actors are funny, but the situation is portrayed as somewhat serious. This doesn't quite get the tone right.

I'll still watch it though.

There were two Ghostbusters cartoons. The one with a gorilla and acouple dudes in a weird old car. Then the one called 'The Real Ghostbusters' which was based off of the movie and all that iconography.

Some good parts, some OK parts, some parts I don't think were all that good, but I'm still looking forward to it.

This movie has a metric fuck ton of expectations to meet and a hugely anti audience coming at it already. If it's received as even mediocre I'll be surprised, but it still has my support.

The only thing that made me wrinkly my nose was the music. Can't put my finger on it.

Well, that's the case in the originals too, though Winston is basically just some guy that comes in looking for a job and is not played over-stereotypically for an 80s movie.
 
So why wasn't Leslie Jones a scientist as well? Instead she's the "street smart" one. Really? WTF. One of the other 3 couldn't have played that character instead?
 
I'll be honest here, I was watching the trailer and laughing out loud just thinking about what the reaction was going to be here. Some of the humor fell flat for me, I don't feel like there's a lot of chemistry between the characters (it's a short trailer though) and I'm not sure that I like the "somebody is making more ghosts" thing - I'm assuming it's a human but I'd like to be wrong on that.

I don't think there's a single 'vagina joke' in the trailer?

Overall, it looks fine. A bit rote (generic CG skeletons, a few obvious gags) - but nothing outright offensive. Looks like an perfectly enjoyable action-comedy. At the same time, it's not really blowing me away in any particular area.
I also don't hold the original film up as the ultimate manifestation of my childhood, so maybe I'm in the wrong place to try and understand the outrage.

Yes the first movie has a sense of weight, scale and doom (even if at times it's just 50 extras standing on a street corner waving) because it's played somewhat straight.

They're characters you can get behind.

Not making, amplifying their ability to appear in the real world.

Side note:
Trailer is so much better on a second viewing.


I love the look of the film so much.
 
They nailed the visuals. But, I was bored watching the trailer. It'll be interesting to watch. It can't be worse than Ghostbusters 2... Right?

That was also the 80s, as you said, and it wasn't heralded as some socially progressive movie as this one has.

At least it's progressive for white women...

Well, that's not entirely true, the Filmation Ghost Busters was hastily thrown into production to beat the ABC animated TV show to air. It was the reason why Columbia Pictures had to change the shows name to The "Real" Ghostbusters. The first episode of the Filmation show debuted days before The Real Ghostbusters went to air. I think Filmation were trying to retain the copyright to the name "Ghost Busters" for TV use.

Though the Filmation Ghost Busters is based on a live action 1970's children's TV show with the same name: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KdPfUYgY6nw . This did cause some problems with the Ghostbusters movie that may have been settled privately.
