And let's be honest

If the GB trailer was the most perfect trailer, it'd still receive a pretty substantial amount of hate (because the hate originated from the cast being all women).
That's a pretty big jump in logic

How come Spy didn't get any hate for being a female led comedy about the spy genre which is dominated by men?

Based on the trailer, movie just looks empty and all the jokes fall flat
Throw in crappy cgi and a tone far from the original
And you have a by the numbers Hollywood borefest remake

No offense, but saying shit like "it's the wrong type of empowerment" is sexist in itself. It's you trying to say should and should not be "the right kind" of empowerment.

Ha ha, when did I say that. You want to start throwing sexist around have at it, but I'm not taking that label so you can advance your cause.

these criteria are getting tasty, does Red count?

Sure and that was cool too.

We get them few and far between.

Though Red was just as male lead.

Became it wasn't Ghostbusters?

Disagree.
I think McCarthy and Jones (especially) are doing better than okay.

McCarthy was pretty much invisible to me during the trailer when it comes to jokes and humor. But do you really find Jones funny in it? She was overly loud and basically a walking stereotype of the big, loud black woman.

I mean, I respect your opinion fully, and maybe I could give you McCarthy, but Jones..? =/

They need to get you in the writers room lol

I would probably replace everyone with ninjas.

What alternate universe do you live in where Spy didn't get lots of hate? People were shitting on the film and actually saying that the positive reviews were bullshit without having seen the film.

But as excelsiorlef says, Spy doesn't enrage a huge fanbase by existing.

I don't know about a movie that stars multiple women but Terminator starred a woman over 30 years old as the protagonist.

That was an Arnie vehicle first and formost.

And was 30+ years ago.

The reality is women lead movies like this one where a man doesn't play a significant role is rare as fuck.

Even the examples given have men in makor roles.

Bill is in the title and is The Bride's main goal.

Terminator is the titular character as well.

Jones is probably the main thing I have an issue with in the trailer. Especially this soon after the Oscars. Only thing that my evil side would've enjoyed more was if this trailer was released during the Oscars.

Well. Looks like somebody is going to try and drag me into the cinema after showing her the trailer and who is directing. Damn.

:P

If the trailer was funny and hit all the right notes and feels, people would praise it like they would anything else that shows promise.
I've been REALLY positive about this movie up until now. Thought it looked promising from the start. Ghostbusters is my favorite movie of all time and I love GB2. But, this new trailer wasn't particularly funny. I've laughed at trailers before, but not this one. I more or less had feelings of "uh oh" going through it and that's it.

More trailers and media are probably necessary. Still can't make even close to a full judgment but I'm a little concerned at the direction.

That would've clashed incredibly with Leo's award. Like an unstoppable force against an immovable object.

Overly loud? You mean in the last few seconds of that trailer?

Looked really good to me. Effects are a bit ropey, but they often are in trailers. The main thing is they got the humour and characters down with the right tone, and didn't go for the shitty grim dark bollocks.

I mean sure, it simply can't be as good as the original, but it looks a hell of a lot better than Ghostbusters 2, and like it'll be a genuinely fun movie in its own right.

I'll be there opening night. Can't wait!

Did not like the double-pistols/punching ghosts over-the-top action scene. Or the last 10 seconds. Or the fact they have all great talents...except the black woman whose skill is that she umm....knows New York really well?

The rest of it I genuinely liked though. I'll go see it.

I like the colors and that it has a lot of pop in the cinematography. I just wish it weren't being bogged down by adolescent, overly-used humor. It felt, again, like those horror movie spoofs like Scary Movie, A Haunted House, etc. and that's just really not a good thing. Feig mentioned a while back that he wanted to make it scary, but here's a possession scene that could have been, but we're making Exorcist jokes again and literally ending it with someone being slapped.

My first impressions were pretty bad and I'm against the kind of humor on display, but I'm not naive enough to believe that some bad trailer jokes = entire movie, and there's always the off chance that it works better in context or that the movie is better in the grand scheme.

If Fieg wanted this to be scary, that looks like a complete failure on his part. The comedy definitely isn't in line with the original but it might work better in context.

Meh. Can't get behind the slap and scream jokes. I'll watch it anyway, because I am a sucker. And then I will complain on the internet. Again, because I am a sucker.

Overall interested in watching the movie, wish I didn't have to be a remake and could of been just a reboot. I think the casting is great except for McCarthy, she always seems to be more or less the same character in every movie and just seems like a one trick pony. Have some fears from the trailer but hopefully won't be too big of a deal in the whole movie.

I don't know about a movie that stars multiple women but Terminator starred a woman over 30 years old as the protagonist.

Linda Hamilton was 28 at the time of the first terminator.

She is 35 in the second, where she already has a 14 year old son

I'll say that if anything, Leslie Jones being the outsider makes her feel too much like they were going for a Zedemore expy :p

Everyone has their own opinion
You will never be able to prove whether the hate comes from the quality of the trailer or the fact that it is an all female cast
But
I think there is enough hate out there from many groups that you can at least give consideration to it simply being a dull uninspired trailer

Didn't they not want to even cast Arnie in that movie at first? The only movie of note he had really any fame from at that time was Conan and he had maybe 10 lines in the whole movie.

Anyways I'm just saying, 30 year old Woman in one of the defining sci-fi movies

Linda Hamilton was 28 at the time of the first terminator.

She is 35 in the second, where she already has a 14 year old son

Ah hell never mind then, my math was off. I take it back.

Yeah I mean I don't even care if it's anything like the original. That's not a standard I'm holding it against. If it's completely different that's fine. But this style of humor always turns me off. Like I said it could work better in some context and I'm just judging the trailer. Whoever decided to end the trailer with that scene never needs to be allowed to cut a trailer ever again. If it ended with some cool big effects shots or action like as seen earlier in the trailer I feel like it would've made a better impression at least.

Supernatural action comedy yeah.

No, you said major action movie. Which this is certainly not, and the original is MOST DEFINITELY not a major action movie. Seeing a car turn a corner fast or McCarthy get slapped doesn't qualify as a major action movie. And the "weapons" in the last part are probably going to have every bit of 30 seconds of screen time. If this is an action movie, so is Pineapple Express.

Mad Max is a great example of rebooting a beloved franchise and making the main character a woman (no matter what anyone says, Furiosa is the main character).

The Divergent series, the Hunger Games. Salt was fun. Hanna was amazing. Charlies Angels. Miss Congeniality was great. Suckerpunch was fun. I could go on and on and on.

There's plenty of examples of fun and well loved movies with female leads.

No one is claiming that people who dislike the new film/its trailer are GG types. I certainly wouldn't lodge the accusation against Gordon Shumway, for instance! However, denying that a very serious, very real contingency of people like that exists is ignorant.

Pineapple Express has multiple action scenes

The tone feels waaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy off, could be a good film but that does not feel like Ghostbusters at all, not one bit.
Yeah that's what I feel initally, I am still going to see it and give it a chance but the trailer was uninspiring.

Pixels 2: The Ghostening!

OK, it's not that bad, but the trailer did nothing for me. CGI is so-so, most of the jokes fell flat, and the slapping-screaming scene at the end is the opposite of funny. We'll see, maybe it's just a bad trailer.

Well that's just cruel lol. At least Feig knows how to make and write films :v

Spy was a much smaller movie
It wasn't Ghostbusters
It turned out to be pretty good

Pineapple Express has multiple action scenes

Not my point, The Bodyguard with Whitney Houston also has a couple of action scenes. It doesn't mean anyone would actually classify it as a "major action movie."

TBF they should've gone deeper into comedy instead of going the SNL route if they really wanted to pull this off.

Kristen Schaal
Lauren Lapkus
Kaitlyn Olson
etc.

I love that people keep giving me semi examples.

Though this is the first great one. Even then twas just Weaver and a lot of dudes and few other women.

You wanted examples of older women in Action movies, presumably with good reputation.

There's lots of examples of older female leads in these roles, mainly from sci-fi. It's even kinda a trope at this point.

There are ton's of Sci Fi vehicles with female leads, off the top of my head

Ultraviolet
Aliens franchise
Aeon Flux
Dark Angel
Buffy
Resident Evil

Are there a higher proportion of male led films, absolutely, but there are really good franchises out there that aren't focused on male hero. One could even argue Firefly, though Mal is the lead, the most OP character is River.
