Ghostbusters (2016) Trailer #1 (Feig, Wiig, McCarthy, McKinnon, Jones)

It's laughable, really. All of the hate is either nostalgia or, well, cast related. And what surprises me the most is that so many on GAF are also on this train, I expected different.

So far, all I saw is so, so much better than I expected. Can't wait to finally watch this. And I really hope the cast will know how to deal with the 'Ethics in Ghostbusting' audience on social media, damnit.

Is it really impossible that some people don't enjoy the humor/writing presented in the trailer?

I think deflecting all criticism with accusations of sexism is really just an easy-out for people to defend their own opinions and discount the opinions of others. Sure that must be going on in some places, but you can easily see the dislike of this trailer is well beyond the reasonable point of assuming bad apples. A legitimate amount of people really do dislike the trailer for reasons unrelated to casting or nostalgia. Some people just dont think "funny hat" is very good humor. The movie is indeed getting more backlash than it deserves but that should be expected when you're remaking a classic and your first trailer makes the writing look like shit. I'm not at all surprised, first impressions are everything.

I have noticed that the Ghostbusters Community organizers and website owners have been more or less at war with the Ghostbuster fans over this trailer. It's really bizzar and almost reminds me of the current state of the Republican Party with the election. Establishment leaders disliking what voters are saying (Trump).

I know they claim independence and that they haven't been "bought," but considering a lot of these people were invited to the Sony Pictures lot the day before the trailer dropped and got to meet Reitman and Feig makes things looked a little fishy to be honest.

Who knows... Even if they weren't bought, then at the very least their opinions have been influenced by Sony's generous treatment. People tend to have a hard time offering criticism to others that have treated them positively.

Not sure if this was posted - here is a rundown of the entire movie from someone who has seen it or claims to have.
I'll reserve my judgement until the movie comes out in July.

It really doesn't, it looks like a cheap, fanmade knockoff.

Zero atmosphere, looks closer to the movie pixels than ghost busters.
Have you seen PIXELS?

I have.

It's an abysmal movie and looks nothing like this 2:38 trailer.

Or they're actually excited and know first hand that Feig isn't just in it for the money.

But yes any major fan community that likes it and is excited must be bought and paid for.

Is the next step to declare them not true fans?

But glad we're bringing in the evil "The Establishment" into the world of Ghostbusters.

I think you are taking my analogy a bit too seriously. I'm just pointing out that I have seen a very strong indication that site operators are more supportive of the trailer and dismissive of fan criticism than I would have expected. Obviously they are among the biggest fans of the franchise since they take the time and money to run websites focused on the property.

Right and you jumped straight away to they must be bought and paid for instead of considering that maybe they're genuinely excited.

All this discussion about that shitty trailer...
I'm going to install ghostbusters the video game. The closer we will ever get to a ghostbusters 3.

I said it looks "a little fishy" and that at the very least they are less willing to be critical because of good treatment.

If Nintendo offered me to fly me to Seattle to play Metroid Prime: Federation Force the week before it was released, do you think I would becoming on NeoGAF bashing the game and Nintendo for making a spin-off game for the 3DS rather than a real main series sequel for the Wii U. Most likely not. I wasn't paid to talk positively about the game, but I'm likely to be less critical with the hope I will get similar treatment in the future.

GhostbustersGate? It's about ethics in Ghostbusters?

Like who?

Someone funny.

3? As far as I'm concerned, that dreadful sequel we got in 1989 barely qualifies as 2.

1 and done - it's a perfect movie and everything else is ignorable. Murray should never have agreed to 2 - Razor's Edge wasn't worth it.

Not sure what makes you think he's a puppet, but he looks fantastic nonetheless. The film's effects look really good in general, honestly.

No slimer is fully CGI in all the shots. I know since we did slimer.

Not according to the director of the film.

Paul Feig said:
People are obsessed with Slimer. He’s probably the most recognizable thing from Ghostbusters, or the thing that people are most focused on. It’s so funny to me. Even Ivan will say that was just a side character. It wasn’t really until the cartoons that it took on a life of its own. But we debated a long time, and I was really against putting him in this trailer in the beginning. Then as I saw the special effects come in — he’s actually a puppet, and then we CG’d over him to make him more lifelike — I thought, "Ah, we can put him in. He looks cool."

Oh come on. Claiming, or even insinuating, that people who liked the trailer/are hyped for the movie are "bought" is as idiotic as claiming people who don't like the trailer/are not hyped for the movie are misogynists.

I don't get this fascination with puppets, seems like kinda pointless nostalgia-grabbing. The only reason they used puppets before was that CG animation didn't exist. It makes no sense at all to make a Slimer puppet in 2016, when you can get a far more realistic result with far less hassle on a computer. If it looks bad, it's not because it's CG, it's because it's bad CG.

Oh come on. Claiming that people who liked the trailer/are hyped for the movie are "bought" is as idiotic as claiming people who don't like the trailer/are not hyped for the movie are misogynists.

I think they're specifically referring to the people who were invited to meet Feig and watch the trailer ahead of time, not everyone who liked the trailer.

What he means is there is a dude wearing a green slimer prop for placement reference which then we replace with a fully cg slimer. Look they are working on slimer on the screen next to me as we speak so you just gotta trust me on this.

Ok? I don't know who you are, I have no idea if you're telling the truth or not. I'm just going on what the director of the film said. You could be 100% correct and I wouldn't know. If you have a reputation here, I'm sorry, but right now you just seem like a random poster on Neogaf to me.

Hey, now this thread might get like, interesting interesting. Not just "interesting."

We got animators doing post on the movie stopping into the thread!

Well feel free to believe what you want and don't forget to check the vfx breakdown videos after the movie is out.

Been a couple of days since I last watched the trailer. My biggest issue with it, is that it's just not funny. I still think they made this for little kids, but with exorcist jokes in there that no kid would likely understand,it's just confusing who this film is for.

Reminds me of some stupid Adam Sandler movie. Not what I expect when thinking about Ghostbusters. Welp there goes another classic. Wtf is Sony Picture doing? First Spiderman 2 and now this? ugh

Watched it quite a few times now and a lot of reaction videos too, it's certainly getting mixed feelings, but not as much hate as I expected from those videos.

Still could go either way, it could just be a badly cut trailer and the next trailers and movie could turn out to be a fun flick, or it really could be just a poor movie.

Paul Feig can make decent movies though and it's not the first time one of his movies has had a bad trailer, so not going to write off this film just yet.

"She sees ghosts and ends up joining the ghostbusters for her street smarts."

Jesus christ

I mean... That's a detail you can see in the trailer. "You guys know science, I know New York" is a thing she says in the trailer. Not sure if there's anything inherently wrong with that angle either (besides the touchy racial politics of it all), but like I said before, it all comes down to the execution and we haven't seen that yet.

Speaking of nostalgia film bandwagons the studios are doing (Back to the Future next?), do you think will this be better or worse than last Jurassic Park?

Jurassic Park was done right because is a film with less nostalgia weight, Back to the Future is the 80's I can see a much bigger shitstorm than this.

I kind of want it to be true that Bill Murray is a misogynistic skeptic who gets pushed out of a window and killed.

The internet reaction and resulting shitstorm would be so, so good.

Just fyi to those legitimitely wondering why people think the hate towards this Ghostbusters is sexist based, these vague answers don't help at all. Especially when "women comedians aren't funny" is a thing.

And honestly, just because people make light of the fact that there are sexist comments out there about the film, they are not saying that you personally are a sexist.

Too many people in this thread and on the greater internet are acting like they need to defend any form of negative criticism about this film. It's like when someone jumps in to defend their religion even though they don't realize the person they are defending is a fanatic.

....

oh god yes.

Back in June, the Oscar-winning director told the UK Telegraph that in regards to rebooting the Back To The Future trilogy onscreen, “That can’t happen until both Bob (Gale) and I are dead. And then I’m sure they’ll do it, unless there’s a way our estates can stop it.”

I honestly do not understand that.

Why would you care that much? It's just a movie. Yes, it may suck, but still. Not until you're dead? Your estate will try to stop it? That's super petty.

Then again, Bob Gale is a ridiculous control freak.

Already seen him die a hundred times, though I don't think defenestration was one of them

They created a property they care about and don't want to see anyone take the name and use it in a way they don't like.

I applaud them in a world thats going in the opposite direction

He obviously cares about his own work. Isn't that a good thing?

Wait Melissa Mccarthy was on Gilmore Girls?
Man, I can't believe I never put that together.

Well she gets points for that, still not very hot on this movie though.
