Welp. Seems people are gearing up for a bomb.

"Not until I'm dead and then some".

That's way too hyper for my taste. I'm all for creator empowerment, and it's fully in Gale and Zemeckis' interests to say such a thing (plus it is their prerogative), but at some point you have to realize when you're being a little too overprotective of a piece of mass medium made for human consumption. But this issue could spawn a much bigger conversation about making art within a "conveyor belt industry", and that deserves its own thread. Maybe I'll make that one, maybe.

Lol @ Murray, Ackroyd, and Hudson being blackmailed into their cameo roles. What a lord of garbage.

That would make a lot of sense. And LOL at McCarthy being the only sane person on-set and being the one to uphold the franchise.

This whole video is based around one anonymous post from 4chan that sounds super generic.

I'm not a defender of the new film, but this video seems a little silly.

To be fair, a lot of rumors that were eventually confirmed about Fantastic 4 came from 4Chan as well. It has near-total anonymity.

"The Studio are becoming gun shy of playing the feminism/ misogyny card for publicity purposes after the terminal under performance of Warner Bros. Mad Max Fury Road."

Ehh...? They were using Mad Max: Fury Road as a barometer for this movie? Granted, Mad Max: Fury Road wasn't an amazing performer at the box office, but it wasn't exactly a failure either. Fury Road miraculously did quite well given how much it had stacked against it. It was an obscure franchise that hasn't seen the light of day since 1985, it was R-Rated and didn't get a huge amount of promotion. But word of mouth and extremely positive buzz from critics helped make that movie a success. It also has 6 Oscars under its belt and will see a lot more success post release.

You do have to take this stuff with a grain of salt, but given that these rumors are coming from Sony, I would have to say that this doesn't sound good. It's weird that McCarthy wanted this movie to be "good" like the cartoon series. I mean you can see the cartoon series influence here, especially in Kate McKinnon's costume. She is going all out SatAM and not holding back. But it is still a weird statement.

Sony being scared of this movies failure isn't though. Honestly, this is their big summer blockbuster and they only started advertising now.

Winston isn't great. Now Patty may be the same or worse, but that really remains to be seen.

Wi8nston had hie moments in the movies, but to be honest I liked his character more in the Saturday Morning cartoon series. I feel like they fleshed out his character in ways that the movies didn't. He also took on the role of the resident mechanic in the cartoon series.

While you're right that tons of stuff can come out online in places like 4chan, comparing what we know so far about Ghostbusters to Fantastic Four is completely misguided. Fantastic Four was an epic trainwreck that everyone heard had to be reshot, recut, director fired, etc.

So far, we haven't heard anything like that for Ghostbusters.

This video is literally just 'studio worried, stars fought on set, director had twitter tirade.' That is normal for probably 90% of films. Again, nothing like the VERY SPECIFIC Fantastic Four stuff that was coming out a good year before the film was even released.

And GB3 was in various states of development hell for nearly 25 years, with frivolous business trips, wasted meetings and unused scripts being thrown around at a ridiculous pace.

It's easy to play this game.

...?

The GB3 that was in development hell for two decades and this relaunched 2016 version aren't really connected in any way, so I'm not sure what that has to do with the comparison to Fantastic Four.

But I'm not going to argue further. If you want to take that video and cite it as gospel, go right for it.

Do you seriously believe that Sony could blackmail the original GB cast? Really?

My point was that even though F4 was a debacle in nearly every way, there are a lot of films that go through those troubles. I don't cite the video as gospel, but it's not nearly as far-fetched as you might think, considering that several accounts that came out of 4Chan (that purported to be insider knowledge) were later proven to be mostly correct.

Do you seriously believe that Sony could blackmail the original GB cast? Really?

Your guess is as good as mine.

Some thing someone made.
Like THIS is a real problem for people..sheesh..

I don't know what Sony has on any of the original cast that they could do to "Blackmail" them. But give them enough money... you never know?

To be fair, from what I understand, there are several cast members (including Murray) who hold various rights to the franchise. Even if the other three original guys (Aykroyd/Ramis/Reitman) had wanted to do a third film way back then, they would have needed to get Murray's approval to get it moving.

It wouldn't surprise me at all if they basically cajoled everyone into giving their blessings/agreement to push it forward.

I would have never guessed

I love it because you know that reddit doesn't actually give a shit. That place turns into stormfront jr. at the drop of a hat. It just works as a convenient way to shit on the movie while obscuring their real reason for the dislike.

Daaaamn @ that quote. Poor guy, that must suck so bad.

Yeah it's pretty brutal, this one got me too:

Now 30 years later, seeing little kids with their Ghostbusters backpacks, seeing whole families dress up—the movie has a special place, and I’m very humbled and touched by it. I certainly am thankful to have been a part of it. I love being an actor. I still enjoy the process. I’m still hoping that I’m going to get that one great role that I thought I had in the original Ghostbusters. 30 years later, I’m still looking.

Not to derail but i said it before it released, Fury Road's biggest problem was its release window.

They should of released either at the tail end of the Summer season or outside of it. Too much competition that had too much muscle behind it for it to ever succeed.

This is unfortunate because if this is true, it just signals once again that the studios are taking the wrong lessons from films. Fury Road didn't bomb because of its feminist angle in trailers, it bombed because it came two weeks after Avengers, went head to head with Pitch Perfect and two weeks before Jurassic World.

It was always going to be a word of mouth movie but it had no chance to get the spotlight or build momentum with the constant stream of the competition. This is reinforced by the success of Kingsman last year in February and Deadpool this year. Non established brands that aren't in the typical PG-13 mold need space to build hype and time to get legs under them.

That 4chan rumor is weird. Like it mentions Feig and McCarthy fighting, when, aren't they like really close given they've been so involved in each other's careers? Also her being a huge nerdy fan of the cartoon is weird, you only ever hear about that cartoon on the internet it seems like, especially given she would have been close to 20 years old when it aired, so it couldn't be a "she grew up with it" thing.

That wasn't funny. Just seemed like it was trying too hard to be funny. I am not a fan of that. Not really a fan of anything in there though I do enjoy Kristen Wiig in other movies.

Mad Max didn't bomb. It underperformed, but for a niche IP with exploding budget it did okay.

People don't seem to view it in context - biggest Mad Max film to date, a franchise coming back after thirty years that was always cult made an absurd amount and won six Oscars. The next one will kill at the bo.

Oh my god that was soooooooo bad.

They managed to capture exactly 0% of what made the first Ghostbusters so great.

Horrible!

Wish there was more outrage when gays mince across the screen in lots of films.

I can't help but think people are using the faux outrage for the stereotypical depiction of a black person, who if she had a problem with wouldn't take the role, as an excuse to hate this version of Ghostbusters.

I'd be very interested in a granular writeup of who disliked and why. I wonder what the ratio would be if you take out all the people who hate the film just because there were women in it.

Of course there's people calling racism when in fact they're really mad about the genderswap. But you can't deny that Jones' character (at least, the way she's exposed in the trailer, can't comment on the movie of course) is exactly the stereotypical black character people have been campaigning against for years and most recently during the #OscarsSoWhite-campaign. Of course Jones won't agree with those people or this sentiment in general publicly, you don't bite the hand that feeds.
It's beyond all reason to attack Jones on that though, they should address the writers who came up with this character.

I didn't like it because of various reasons:

- Melissa McCarthy. I can't stand her. Leslie Jones is awful too. I really like McKinnon here, and wiig does a ok job per the trailer.
- It doesn't have the same mood as the originals, it looks like a scooby doo film. It lacks grittiness.
- The jokes. Not funny at all.
- Leslie Jones role. Loud stereotiped sassy black woman. No thanks.
- No sense of danger or horror at all.

No I can't deny the depiction of her character isn't stereotypical. This film is trying to be unoffensive as possible hence why I think they went safe and just made a remake of Ghostbusters rather than taking a risk and doing something completely different.

I have a feeling if they ever greenlight a second movie that they are going to try something different having established these ladies as the new Ghostbusters. I think that they wont establish their company until the very end of the film where they will get upgraded gear that doesn't look so industrial/basic.

Sorry, I didn't mean to imply that most haters have a problem with women being the lead. I just meant that it's pointless keep posting the likes/dislikes as some kind of indicator of what the final film will be.

If they put out a second trailer I think it's going to address a lot of the criticisms theyve been bombarded with.

I find it a little hard to believe but not too out there, if you look back Ernie Hudson was quite vocal about not liking the reboot, Akroyd was a little coy with the whole thing only offering his praise for the franchise, Murray originally liked it (which as i said in my original post was probably so he'd never have to play Peter Venkman again!), it did seem quite sudden that Akroyd was doing a cameo, then suddenly so was Hudson - it was very much like they all suddenly fell in line for some reason.

re CrazyRabbits post many many times did Ramis and Akroyd attempt to get a third movie going, unfortunately Murray was the obstacle 9/10 times he just hated sequels and wouldn't even entertain the idea, to the point where he didn't even read scripts when he got them.
Some of the ideas for a third movie made their way into Ghostbusters 3 via Akroyd with his typical zeal for the franchise

This is to the og Ghostbusters what Scary Movie is to Scream.

This looks like a 90s slap stick parody film.

HORRIBLE.

You honestly think that if the first safe movie makes bank, they go wild on the sequel, instead of rehashing the same safe first movie?

It's just the jokes tbh. People extrapolate the jokes on par with the writing in general and unquestionably that doesn't give it a good look. Plus all it seems was "a joke film", joke after joke.

The only funny one was "the power of pain compels you".

I think this will be a TMNT/Jurassic Park grade film. I don't think it make as much money as the other two though :)
