Not really, when network latency adds a minimum of 50ms of lag in typical scenarios, a comparatively small 16ms is statistical noise.

Well... good for you. I wouldn't trust them with anything like that, as the owner of 2 PS4's and a possible future PSVR owner. Makes no sense to spend extra money on any of that shit when they would obviously want people to upgrade.

Someone has finally talking sense. Sega did it and Nintendo did it, it doesn't work for a closed platform. ANd as a product devalues in mindshare what people thought they were buying.
If they go through with it, Highly doubt PS5-PS6 will have the same impact in early adoption that PS4 did.
And it will be slow generational decrease that ultimately may cause a huge effect in the gaming industry as a whole.
Seriously after reading Console wars book, it's like watching Sega, Nintendo all over again during a golden age where people were making money, and buying systems, and they thought incremental add ons/upgrade refreshes were a smart idea.

Man, i can't wait for the next PlayStation and Xbox. Both were underpowered compared to what I would have liked to see. Having new versions of both, possibly coming soon, is very exciting. Day 1 for both.
It only makes sense if they make a huge profit on hardware which they don't.
Apple can do it with iPhones because they make huge margins on it. Especially to the people who spend an extra $100 for twice the memory.

The shift to x86 probably allowed them to pull off this incremental approach, as the hardware is no longer exotic which means game compatibility would be relatively easier to attain across multiple hardware iterations. And/or Sony felt technology in the gaming industry is advancing too fast for them to keep their console 6-8 years on the market without any upgrades.

They would want users from both pools to continue to be happy so that they buy more software. They would also want those users to continue buying into their product with each new generation and sub-generation.
Did PS3 users suffer greatly and receive no support from Sony when the PS4 came out? Did they get left out in the cold to fend for themselves? Not that I'm aware of. I'm sure there might be the odd instance here or there, but that's an inevitability.

PS4.5 including more power so u don't have to have a VR box sounds reasonable. I don't think this means all the devs are going to jump ship from the OG PS4.

this would actually benefit everyone, even people who dont want to upgrade. This basically assures them that all of their games and content will be playable on future PS's. And that games built in next 5-6 years at least will work on their PS4's.
It will also help out developers by simplifying their development for the future, they wont have to build 2 different ports like with PS3... It is also better for Sony since they have large hardware base that can buy their games and services without having to sell them hardware at loss again.
Imagine if PS3 players were able to run same OS, same games, same content as PS4 players, just at lower fidelity? It would be awesome! It is basically future proofing PS4's that we own.
So this would be the best possible news for everyone.

Seems like the kind of thing to do once you've already reached a market saturation point. The PS4 is only about 2.5 years into its generation.
Sony doesn't make much on hardware, especially not theoretical cutting edge PS4.5 hardware.

Current gen was outdated the moment they were revealed.
The external VR box does not provide more power to start with. It only does the HDMI splitting, re-projection and 3D audio. No extra graphics power.
The only way I see this working is if they disable non-VR games from using the VR upgrades. IE it's a PS4 with VR AAA ready. I always wondered how they were going to do non-VR Indy games on the PS4, so maybe that's the stop gap to address their performance problem.
All PS4s going forward are 4K and AAA ready for PSVR. All original systems can only play specific VR titles and Indy VR.
Both systems are locked to PS4s hardware specs for non VR titles or titles non VR mode.
That would anger some people that see it as a waste of tech, but it would make the hard sell a lot easier to me and not break their installation base or mind share.

I don't think this would change the setup of the PSVR in the slightest. It'd affect the performance though, of course.
As for devs jumping ship, I doubt that'd be an option. Unless Sony went crazy, I'm pretty sure it'd be mandated that every single game has to support both consoles. Not to mention it'd be ridiculous for any dev to ignore roughly 40 million potential customers.

1. Nintendo is about to bring out a new console and MS have already publicy spoken about making an upgraded XB1.
2. This is the year of 4K, 4K Blu-rays finally hitting in mass.
3. Sony has 4K TVs to sell and Playstation is often used as the Trojan horse in pushing their electronics to consumers.
4. PSVR, Sony wants this as the future. An upgraded PS4 means Sony can get more AAA games running on it.
5. PS4/PS4K running side by side means less risk as opposed to just PS4K to achieve the above 4.

No, it's the kind of things when you have to deal with the following realities:
1) Games are taking longer to develop due to amount of detail, complexity, and depth of the games. A five year cycle is not conducive to the visions of ambitious developers. Last gen was seven years, and developers still had issues with transitioning. Therefore, generations must be longer.
2) Technology is rapidly advancing especially in the performance/watt arena. GPUs and CPUs are advancing rapidly in the world of PC. This is counter to the need of longer generations.
3) Virtual Reality as well as augmented reality are finally in the reachable world of possibilities. VR rendering adds an additional computational expense that taxes both the CPU and GPU.
So, what you are left with is needing a business plan that addresses the reality of needing a longer generation while also keeping pace with technology trends. Longer generations with mid-gen refreshes is thus the only thing that makes business sense in the long run.
Sega never did forwards compatibility, you couldn't play 32X games on a stock MD. PC Engine would be a better example. Initial Super CD and Arcade CD games were compatible with both existing hardware and new hardware, with enhancements when played on newer hardware. Nintendo copied this model quite successfully with Gameboy / Gameboy Color too.

You can most likely get this in cutscene quality rendered in real time on current hardware. If you want that sort of fidelity at 1080p, you'll need to wait for the real PS5

Not crap, it's just going to be more and more like PC. You will be playing in your PS4 against people that play at higher res/frame rate and are at an advantage against you. Also, there won't be as much an incentive for developers to extract as much performance from the PS4. They will make a version of the game for it, but why fighting for every last frame per second if half the userbase has already shifted to the PS4.5?

By the time you reach the end of its cycle, you get a little bored but the games are at their best. Then the next thing comes along and blows us away again. The time in between is necessary to build that excitement and bring in the early adopters.
This would totally fuck that up. Maybe not in the short term but over the long term it would be small increments instead of big leaps in tech and you likely won't even notice them if the hardware is being refreshed every 2-3 years. Tech simply doesn't move that fast anymore.

With all this GPU talk, no one wants to talk about the real elephant in the room: Netbook class CPUs charading as something remotely capable for gaming in PS4/XB1. So much so, that PS4 was designed around offloading CPU tasks onto the GPU. The largest upgrade PS4.5 will see is in the CPU department, and perhaps the bandwith numbers if they can play their cards right with HBM 2.0.
