3DS Streetpass Experiences

I haven't managed to get 100 in a day, and that is despite trips back to NYC, to the Nintendo Store, to all but one Disney Park on earth, oh and TEN DAYS IN TOKYO.

To be fair the problem with the last one was I had tons of rain and would have the 3DSes packed away and would forget about them. Was awesome finishing the JP puzzles though.

Tentative plan is two-three days in Japan this fall on the way to Shanghai and HK (Disneylands if you haven't guessed) so maybe? The fact I haven't been to a con in years doesn't help.

I think PAX East was the first time I got 100 passes a day. If I remember to stay on top of it I can replicate it at most cons I go to.

A friend with a Japanese 3DS brought back the six pieces I needed to finish everything (all from the Daigasso Band Bros puzzle) when he went to Japan early this year.

I'm tempted to go to one of the Zelda concerts to see how many passes I would get.

I think streetpassing is more of a minority pursuit these days, though.

I get less and less every event and large place I got to. If it's a Nintendo-related event/line up there are several guaranteed. I don't feel like people pack them around everywhere like they used to. And I used to Streetpass at the most random places! I think once was at the post office.

I'm not sure what's up with Nintendo zones here in Canada anymore, but it looks like there's only one location nowadays - Best Buy. In any case, I got a whopping ONE Streetpass on my recent visit, and it was just some challenger for Smash Bros. We used to have Home Depot (lol) stores that were part of this as well as McDonald's but it looks like they are no more.

Unless there's other Nintendo relays that I don't know about it looks like we are majorly SOL. Regular Streetpassing with others in public has also taken an absolute nosedive, which sucks because it's an absolutely brilliant feature.

Starbucks and other places with at&t hotspots are relays now. https://www.att.com/maps/wifi.html

Starbucks almost universally doesn't work anymore ever since switching to Google from AT&T for their hotspots.

I usually go to Home Depot when I feel the need to get lots of relay passes. I reliably get about 20 passes (from the same 5 people, but it still counts toward the 100 daily passes I would assume).

I haven't checked the UK hotspot map for a while.

I walk too fast to hit relays in this city. I should be getting tons of hits given the huge number of Costas, McDonalds, and Subways.

So I landed in Tokyo yesterday for a vacation (visiting inlaws). At some point today, found someone playing スーパーマリオワールド (Super Mario World). I knew there were plans for SNES VC and was announced, didn't realize it was already released?

Nintendo zones??

Last time i tried to launch the app it said service discontinued. Can you still get streetpasses from best buy/mcdonalds?????

This info is very important to a friend who just got a 3ds please reply.

Thanks!

@ above - the first wave launched right after the direct.

The relays are still functioning. They're designed to function just like a normal streetpass; you don't have to do anything other than be in range of a relay. Launching the Nintendo Zone app is actually counterproductive if your goal is getting Mii Plaza streetpasses.

McDonalds and Best Buy sometimes work, sometimes don't. Starbucks flat out doesn't work anymore as most locations have switched to Google wireless. Home Depot is the most reliable source of relay passes for me.

This is bullshit. Got 2 mystery fish findings today, but could reel either in. First one I had enough bait for 5 attempts, 4 were another fish or trash, and the 5th got it, but could only get a quarter of the life down (blooper). The other fish, i dunno what it was but I had 4 bait that could get it, 3 of an exclusive color. So what'd I get? 3 trash and another fish. This was my only time out in main tokyo in over a year, and will be a year before i do it again. About to say fuck this game.

tl;dr finally got 2 attempts at mystery fish, both times game fucked me.

If you only got a quarter of the way reeling in a Blooper, then I'd say your rod isn't ready for this yet. You should be able to reel in any fish within two bites.

I've never been to Japan and I caught 160 fish just fine using relays and anime conventions. Still working on A+.

For mystery fish do you NEED to have all the colours of bait? I feel like in these cases if you don't have all of them, you don't even see the big fish in the water.

I've definitely had mystery fish pop up with no matching bait in my stock. Their appearance conditions are not tied to bait at all.

Interesting... There is a person I pass by weekly that is the one making the mystery fish show up. It shows up under an unknown fish that I have not caught yet. Maybe I almost reeled in the regular unknown fish? No idea....

I have a 3 star rod that used all points, what am I doing wrong?

Also I read every 10 tags from the same person is supposed to net you a random mystery fish, but I pass my wife every time we clear our queues as well as some random that keeps walking by our house but I have definitely never gotten a mystery fish from them. I have all except one of the silver islands and the gold island clear.

If you haven't cleared the game you're definitely too early to be worried about this. The best rod in the game, which totally eclipses all others, is unobtainable until then.

The every-10-passes sighting rule is very consistent for me, but given your statement you probably also have to have cleared more islands for it to start working.

OK, thanks. I will wait until I clear the last 2 islands. The one silver I still have like 2 or 3 spots to clear, the gold just has the last spot that is locked away until I finish up silver.

Thank you SO MUCH for the info.

I have a level-2 11 Catcher Big Catch rod. I'm so tempted to just slap that on a UFO rod and upgrade it to max so that I can catch the rare fish in one go, but I will hold out for a level-3. I must. =(

(I also have a 6+ and an 8+ Big Catch, but both are level-1. I'm really unlucky with this sort of thing.)

I went ahead and did exactly that with an 8+ level 2, then remade it when I got one to bump it to level 3. Then recently I did it again with a 6+ level 3. Costs about 780k to remake and re-upgrade each time.

Just got the FF Explorers puzzle. Thank you Nintendo, I actually had a convention this weekend and this helps.

Your sentence is written ambiguously. Did you mean:

A) "had a convention this past weekend
B) "have a convention this weekend

Got the puzzle on NA but no bites on JP so far.

Holy smokes! I got ever peice prior to this one, but I never knew you could randomly be given a pink piece to start a puzzle out with. I mean, I assumed, but it never happened to me until the newest one.

You know what's special about pink pieces, right?

Hey, it's the same for me. Except that, to this day, I have yet to be given a pink piece to start out with, despite filling in literally every puzzle up until now.

Now excuse me while I go cry myself to sleep.

I'm no different. The distribution of pink ones probably has been more sparse.

How annoying, the new puzzle that triggered gave me a piece for an old puzzle I just hadn't started yet.

I had to wipe my 3DS a while back, and so started the whole StreetPass thing from scratch. I'd been using a Homebrew tool to give myself 300 coins and then spending them on getting back to where I was, aside from pinks. To make it easier on myself, I had been doing it one puzzle at a time so the damn thing wouldn't keep scrolling back and forth.

Also, interesting note, every single puzzle had the bottom right piece as the last piece the coin spending gave me. No exceptions.

I've recently been taking my 3DS on my work commutes. The other day, I had a 'special' Mii StreetPass, had a gold glow/sparkles around them. What's that about?

They're usually Nintendo employees and go out through SpotPass to promote a new game (e.g. Aonuma's Mii went out to promote ALBW). Seeing one in the wild is weird though, could be hacked. Do you live near Nintendo?
