I am introducing somebody I know to anime and they have really enjoyed what they have watched so far. They are patient enough for both subs and dubs, and even has gone so far as to say there is something charming about the stilted dialogue. I said that was really cool but admitted sometimes those things make me cringe, doubly when introducing it to someone.

We decided to watch something really truly bad. Like the epitome what people mean when they say "This is just so anime." Tropey, generic, rubbish trash! What is something I could show them for reference of bottom of the barrel?

It's .hack's concept, except littered with the worst pieces of all modern anime, art style included. Not only is it bad on its own, it sullies a genre that used to almost exclusively belong to a decent show.

Concerning Bleach, probably a bad example, since people generally liked it for the first ~80 episodes.

Pretty much all shounen action series since Dragon Ball and One Piece. Only one I really see that sets itself apart is Gintama.

Also, anything with a long-ass title adapted from a light novel and generally revolves around a boring guy dating 10 girls and his sister.

Bleach had one good story arc. Its second one, Soul Society.

From ones I've seen, I'll go with Infinite Stratos. Super generic harem anime. Has all the stereotypical female archetypes, and the MC encompasses a few himself. Some generic mecha stuff in there, too.

I've seen worse, but those were so generic their titles have been permanently wiped from my memory.

Edit: If you want to watch a somewhat good generic anime, I thought Kenichi: The Mightiest Disciple was a nice shounen fighting anime.

Rail Wars is the definition of a bad anime. Hilariously though, the premise isn't generic at all.

The most generic is probably Bleach, by a long shot. Sword Art Online looks like a Tarantino film compared to it.

Bleach is not the most generic shounen, that's Fairy Tail, Bleach is arguably a worse show but Fairy Tail wins in being a shounen trope factory.

Elfen Lied, Everybody in random forums who told me to watch it because it was "so mature" lied to me. Even my dumb teenage self knew that gratuitous nudity and violence couldn't save that show from mediocrity.
