What is the epitome of bad or generic anime?

Yooo I got randomly suggested this video of his on YouTube and he sort of summed up why I've stopped enjoying anime for a long time.

NSFW: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VzocnfLccs8

yeah that video is fantastic, that's Light Novel adaptations for you! But there are anime out there that doesn't fall on those tropes.

Here's a short list of fantastic anime you SHOULD watch, and might get you back into anime:

Space Brothers
Shirobako
Chihayafuru
HunterxHunter

The most generic anime are those that you forget about a week or two after you finish watching it. There are half a dozen of them every season, usually some shitty mech/gundam knockoff, a light novel adaptation involving a magic academy with fighting tournaments and a tsundere redhead with fire-based powers. Or a variation on harem anime.

Infinite Stratos, Kaze no Stigma, Buddy Complex, Trinity Seven, Da Capo, Freezing, Astrick War, Machine Doll, Green Green..

I see a lot of people also caught the dub of SAO. I felt the sub was really good. That anime isn't on the list of ones that has a strong dub (only few successful dubs out there).

Hey, figure this is as good a place to ask as any, but does Full Metal Alchemist qualify as shonen? Because I'm thinking it should be in contention for the "best shonen ever" mini-discussion if so.

Pretty sure it's just considered bad overall and this isn't a sub vs dub argument.

The show is just an early adolescent fantasy, in every awful sense. The author is fanfiction.net tier.

Black Bullet is so generic that it makes shows like SAO look interesting. The one thing I remember it doing well consistently was sucking.

Terra formars ruins the really cool concept of Dragonball Z meets Starship Troopers and Animorphs by being incredibly racist and sexist, among other things.

Sword Art Online is maybe the worst anime I've ever seen. Its only saving grace is that it's not boring; the downside is that it's aggressively stupid.

The voice acting was not the problem with that show.

Oh god, what was the name of the anime? It's one where if the protag got a bloody nose from ero stuff then the world would explode. It sucked balls and I only got through 1 episode before I axed it. Worst anime ever.

Also anime where the protag is just a little bitch in general. Like deadman wonderland, and the anime where the guys cellphone sees the future.

Just wanted to say SAO is great and y'all need better taste, lol

You want bad anime, go watch Green Green.

Stein Gate?

Pretty much all shounen action series since Dragon Ball and One Piece. Only one I really see that sets itself apart is Gintama.

Also, anything with a long-ass title adapted from a light novel and generally revolves around a boring guy dating 10 girls and his sister.

Someone did not read one punch man.

Dbz is overrated.

SAO is great until they completely ruin the entire premise halfway through the first season. They could have easily went far deeper with that concept, and showed more aspects of daily life for people trapped inside that game world.

One Punch Man is technically Seinen, since it's published under the Young Jump comics line, rather than the Jump comics line, and is serialized in the web companion to Weekly Young Jump, Shueisha's main seinen magazine

Magi was pretty decent.

Is it wrong to pick up girls in a dungeon
Sword art online

For people saying hunter X hunter explain yourselves. Chimera Ant is a little long but truly amazing.

Yeah, S2 of SOA was trash.

S1 I thought we had something really special on our hands.

Nope, incest, damsel in distress, and rape tropes.

God did it become shit fast.

Bad is probably like, Bible Black or something.

Mediocre is like....maybe Attack on Titan.

I'd say Bleach and Sword Art Online are firmly in the below average camp where they're both bad but also both not literally the worst things ever.

Not really but seriously fuck Sword Art Online. Had toonami on in the background, and that dialogue is so goddamn terrible. Anime already has issues with stilted dialogue and horrid acting, but that shit is next level stilted. Also would throw any anime that starts with a black haired self insert boring dude who's bored with life looking out a school window into the mix.

Red flag if there ever was one.

FMA was published in a shounen magazine.

There are plenty of great action shounen series out there if you take the time to look.

The Asterisk War, there's a VIDEO SERIES about how bad it is.

There's people talking shit about Hunter x Hunter in this thread?

what
the
fuck

It's the best shonen anime ever made(and the 2011 version is amazing quality wise for a 100+ ep anime) and the golden standard that most anime can't even dream to reach.

i got to part 2 of that video series. Started cracking up at googling "pink hair anime boob" lolololol

I don't watch much anime, but I know that my roommate and I got drunk as shit taking a drink every time there was an underwear or cleavage shot in Rosario+Vampire. Show is absurd.

Yeah I've learned to be very careful about getting into LN adaptions. Some are still good, or even great, (I love Baccano and I enjoy Durarara by the same author, though they're admittedly older LNs, and I think Log Horizon is great despite a few minor pandering scenes), but they tend to mostly be shit

An easy way to notice if a series is likely to be shit is to look and see what the gender ratio of the main cast is, because the less shitty light novels will usually have a few guys as well as a few girls in main character roles, whereas the legions of shitty ones will have a harem situation with the only other male characters besides the lead being the incredibly minor best friend character who is barely even in the series, or a villain
