Ex-GameTrailers staff announce new project EasyAllies

I can see how people who are not familiar with their inside jokes would think this :(

That's exactly why I don't like the name. You want to attract new people and not only cater to your existing audience (that wasn't big enough to keep your last job) by using an old inside joke as your new name.

Hopefully they can make a good E3 coverage, but i guess they can't even be on the floor?

Bloodworth was at GDC if I'm not mistaken and the new venture should give them the neccessary press credentials. If not they hopefully have enough old contacts in PR to get invited to some of the demos at the show. Last year's floor coverage was actually pretty minimal and it didn't hurt. If they can get two or three people in with a camera, that's two to three shows from the show which is plenty.

Sounds like someone woke up on the wrong side of the bed this morning. There is nothing inherently bad about Easy Allies. It's unique. It connects back to their old shows/attitude. It has a neat logo.

There are better names out there probably but this is no worse than Kinda Funny or any of the countless other random names that gaming shows have.

I think it starts out that way but after they make content long enough it will become just a name. It's not as though the names of other games news outlets make a ton of sense out of context either. I also don't think it's so obtuse that it would throw of new viewers.

People better get used to it because it's all gonna go this way

Yes, and if it means stuff like Easy Allies and Kinda Funny can rise and be successful without the constant fear and anxiety of shutting down, then it means the world will be a better place.

Lol no

People at large won't pay for this kind of stuff. Especially cuz it's free lots of places.

You're right, of course, but the free content is becoming less successful than it used to be because of an increasingly oligopolistic internet. People don't visit as many sites as they used to, and the web advertising model is fairly broken at the moment.

Yeah the key is building a small but devoted, loyal fanbase who can support you. The public at large wont pay for this stuff but hardcore fans will. GT has done a lot of community building just in the last year alone. I think they'll be fine if they keep up the mojo they were working with just before they got shut down.

They probably need well above 50k a month to do it full time. It would be so damn cool (and well worth it) if we could make it happen. If anyone who isn't a fan of their content is reading this, give them a shot, watch a few episodes of their recent shows and see how good they are. A lot of people probably think it still feels weird to pay for video game coverage online, but these guys are well worth it. It's really something special.

Totally agreed. Maybe the OP can be updated to show some of the guys' greatest hits, especially for those who don't know who they are, or haven't followed GT in a while to know what they're doing now?

Pretty much everyone accepts other than the largest sites, everyone else is going to need some kind of funding from their userbase. Not for everyone to pay, but they can't survive on web ads alone.

It's either get paid or die. but I doubt anyone would expect everyone to pay for all the content.

Not at all. I woke up with the Patreon, so the day couldn't have started better for me. Even signed up to Patreon and pledged on my way to work ($10 a month for now, my first crowdfunding ever).

I'm just always so overly critical of them, because I want them to do as well as they possibly can. I really love these guys, they made gaming interesting for me again.

Yeah but this is more about support than subscription to content. I think it's normal that if you want quality, you'd be ready to put your money where your mouth is.
I also support one of my favourite SF writers on Patreon because I want to help her write even more stuff that I love. You are, at the end of the day, doing it also for yourself.

So the streams are gonna be from each person's house I imagine? Like they pass around the twitch account.
I need Ben to go to Brad's so they can talk about JRPGs, especially Trails of Cold Steel.

Hope not. I feel it's important for them to do the streams from a place with a good stream setup and lighting, so they wouldn't have to fumble with getting things working right for half the stream. Huber's streams were just not good in that regard.

Seems like they filmed the first video at Brandon's place, hoping it's big enough to just operate from there.

The milestone goals seem also kinda confusing, is The New Couch the podcast show or is it literally a new couch? Could have easily added a small description to those.

EasyAllies sounds like a romantic comedy with two competing marketing people having to cooperate for a big project falling in love in the process with Jennifer Aniston and someone else.

When GT went away I pretty much realized I stopped watching game reviews. I'd be super happy to have them back, and I wouldn't mind if the format changed to a Just Played-esque format.

Can't wait for the podcast; so much news to discuss!

Looks like they will get close to $20k today, hopefully that is sustained through next month and only grows from there!

At this rate, I think it's safe to say we'll be getting full on reviews back. By the looks of the description of the second weekly podcast, it sounds like a section of that will be Just played style talking about what they've been playing.

I really like these guys and wish them the very best, but jeez, the complete lack of diversity really jumps in your face when looking at 7 white dudes with a cardboard cutout woman in the background.

Looks like you'll get your wish.

I would want to see reviews go away imo. Put something else in its place.

While on a personal level I agree with you, from what I've inferred from following GT and other places is that reviews are big traffic drivers. So the long term benefits of getting more eyes on their channels and brand probably make it a sensible thing to aim for.

I honestly think (and hope) they go above 20k today. People are waking up on the east coast and they have a fairly big international following.

Can you really blame them after a series of massive layoffs and people leaving? As far as I know none of them, besides Bloodworth at one point I think, were ever responsible for hiring people. This is just the skeleton crew of friends that was left.

Unless they manage to get on the dog and bone with someone at Amazon ASAP, they're going to miss a ton of revenue from this 12 hour Twitch stream. No partnership, no subscribers.

Also (if anyone useful reads this) - set up a Streamtip (like Kinda Funny), or use TwitchAlerts (like nearly everyone else). Great to encourage donations during a stream. As of right now, there is no way to donate through Twitch.

If they ever use them, hopefully they're not obnoxious as fuck on the stream. If they're in a centred place or covering anything up, I just leave. So annoying.

Imagine Kyle & Co. waking up to those numbers, haha. If they slept/sleep at all..

I don't think Ben has, been posting occasionally on Twitter.

I vowed if they made a patreon it would be the first I ever contributed to so I'm chipping in. It's been so weird not having them all around

For the past 15 mins, why? =(

This is just the beginning though. It didn't use to be this way, but they've had massive layoffs at GT. They even joked about this in one of the last few episodes of GT Time.
