How is MS' store messed up? This is by policy on their part.
for what it's worth I've beaten all the souls games (except bloodborne dlc which I haven't gotten to yet) and for me the early areas in souls 3 seem harder than any other souls game
obviously people will vary on this stuff, but thta was my honest experience

I'm still waiting for the Microsoft store to honor the purchase. I used PayPal and the funds were taken but there still isn't any way for me to find the codes. This wait is worse than the three weeks it would take to wait on the legitimate western release. 😂

So weird. I was taken immediately to a confirmation page with the codes right there.
I'd say it's a little messed up that people can buy the game in Japanese and play it in English weeks before its release date. Messed up in a good way!

I can't even tell now because the option to buy isn't on the store page any longer. There's definitely no option to select paypal from the xbox one console store.

You need to buy the yen from the Microsoft store. Same company, different store.
Edit:
First, I'd say keep your xbox off (not in hybernation, totally off) prior to making the purchase. I have a suspicion.
Select one of those and add it to your cart. Then do the second one. It'll remember you by the cookies. If you're using chrome, it will translate some of the page for you. Then you can proceed to checkout. It will ask you to sign in or do so offline. I signed in using my MS account. Apparently it's global. If you sign in using your MS account, you should see the screen that Dr.Teflon posted. When you select paypal at the top, you will sign into your paypal account to complete the purchase. After I completed the purchase, then I went to a confirmation page with the codes.
Keeping that tab open, open a new tab and go to xbox.com, sign in, and switch the region to Japan. From there, you can choose to redeem a code. Copy and paste both codes and it will tell you your balance in yen. After that search for Dark Souls 3 (You can use english) and it will take you to a page with the game. Select the game and you should be able to buy it using your balance. You should get a confirmation of the purchase. Now switch your region back to your home country/region and close out.
Turn on your xbox. For me, it started downloading immediately.

My paypal is pending. I didnt have to enter an address when I logged into paypal, but I did put an address in on the MS store. I also checked out with out logging into an account
Worse case is the pendign transaction falls off and the funds dont leave my account. I already have the UK version pre ordered, I just wanted to play it early

I...think I actually got it. Quick question: there were two Dark Souls 3 downloads for me: a 17.2 gig version and a 17.3 gig version. I cancelled the download for the 17.2 gig version. 17.3 is the English version, correct?
Edit: 17.3 gigs is indeed the English version! Hopefully this helps anyone seeing 2 downloads for the game. Rock on!

Seems to be a lot easier that way. But I'd recommend attaching it to a credit card and not debit. I won't let paypal anywhere near my bank account, but I'm more than comfortable letting them know my credit card details.

I think I've went horribly wrong somewhere. I bought the credit, and when I logged into my Microsoft account and tried to buy Dark Souls 3, it's now taking me through some process for downloading some kind of authentication app. It also asked me to enter billing details. I don't understand.

I had this problem too. Resolved it by just going to my Xbox One, switching over to Japan locale, buying the game from the store (not downloading), switching back to US locale, then going to game page and downloading. Hope this helps.

I can't say. For my credit card, I have the option to remove it from their system, so that may be the same for debit cards. But, like I said, I won't let paypal close to my bank account.

Got it downloading on my Xbox. The process isn't bad, it's just pressing buttons on an unfamiliar website while you're signed into PayPal can be a bit tense, even with google translate.

Holy shit. It was a bit of a struggle with all of the different and incomplete instructions out there, but I'm finally downloading Dark Souls III. Thanks to everyone in this thread who helped clear things up.

My suspicion was that if your Xbox was on and you completed the purchase, it may have immediately started downloading prior to you changing the region back. If that's not the case, then I'm not sure why some people are getting their initial downloads being the Japanese version.
