Eurogamer: Independently confirms source that the PS4.5 is real, referred as PS 4K

First release of a playstation console is ALWAYS the best version.... has been always will be.

*Hugs OG PS3 with untouched media slots and PS2 BC*

I remember back in the day when I saw in a magazine a list of PS2 games incompatible with PS2 consoles I could not believe it, I thought it was a typo, the I searched a little bit and saw it was true, Sony fucked up, lol.

Can't believe this story is still going.

To the DF article, dudes , it's option3

Still can't believe how wrong these peoples reads on things are.

What we have here is the usual, almost scheduled like clockwork HW revision we get ,every generation. And no it is not a either or situation, this 4k media supporting unit will be the only version you'll be able to buy sooner rather than later.

The only problem sony are trying to solve here is that you have some people out there with 4k TVs...and Sony want these people to still feel good about using a ps4 as their primary media box under said TV. And that's perfectly fine.

End of freaking non story..

But hey, watch the media outlets scream about how Sony at the last min decided to bail on this PC like short generation idea. It never was going to happen to start with.

Makes for good headlines I guess.

I thought current PS4 was already capable of outputting 4K for media and Sony just needed to do a firmware update for it. Was that just not true?

So PS4K release at $399 and drop PS4 to $299? And same games will run on both with better performance on PS4k? While older games will get a boost in perf on PS4K? I'll be ok with that.

Then Johnny will learn a good lesson about life. You don't need a Ferrari to drive 3 miles to work when a Camry works just fine, no matter what spoiled Jimmy tells you about it. That's not the reason consoles exist.

Johnny will cry tiers of self pity, you heartless monster.

That's cause wee Jimmy is an arsehole, always has been!

Like I said, I don't think my 10 year old nephews who play Clash of Clans together, one on a Fire HD and one on an iPad would care.

I think it's just us enthusiasts who get very enthusiastic over these types of plans ;)

Jimmy is an ass for sure.

no. lol

Still have mine. Never bought a slim in the PS3 era, lol.

Good man. The OG PS3 is a little reminder of the crazy Ken days.... never forget.

I didn't even know that until you linked me..... just blew blasted my mind

It's going to be a slim PS4 with an improved processor that supports 4K video output.

Exactly, this is what I have been saying, this will be a slim revision that plays 4k media...It's not really different than any other slim revision that other consoles have had, it may just be adding a few new features...such as the VR breakout box and maybe a few more USBs.

They make 1080p look better on a 4k set than if you set to 1080p native on that 4k set (scaler off) bUT 1080p native plasma or oled will probably look better than 1080p up scaled on a 4k set, unless it's a very nice 4k set.

Of course depends heavily on screen size and viewing distance from the set as well.

I don't think so with 4K anymore. I think people are used to seeing interlaced resolutions when setting monitors to non-native so assume any non-native content will look bad, but 4K TVs have the benefit of being a direct integer scale of 1080p. So while they can't magically add detail, they do add the nice smaller pixels of 4K while preserving the content perfectly .

So from what I was told the unit is indeed a slim. Devs are on board and OK with it. Haven't heard if ps4.0 will see a slim version because I didn't ask. Was also told to nit purchase a ps4.0 and just wait.

My guess is this thing is coming out this year. Should have specs soon. The only problem I see is how do dev teams optimize for this new unit when their primary console will be 4.0?!?

One dev told me he producer told me he doesn't agree with this decision as it is just turning the console into a pc. Who knows. I will update later.

Now this we know isnt true. Every source including those of you that are going with Zhuge has said that there is a power boost. Also Sony wouldn't be briefing devs at GDC about USB ports and 4k media

huh...

Pardon my rudeness.... but.... can you provide receipts?

Would game developers really need new dev kits for just a media upgrade?

Did any previous consoles receive similar feature updates that required new dev kits?

I disagree, but I also don't like post-modernism interpretation. One is saying primarily for games, the other is not but puts an out in.

If that is compatible then there is no spoon. How far we've fallen from rumors like "New IP named Knack will be shown and introduced by Mark Cerny" to this wishy washy bullshit.
That's the most irritating thing about this rumor. No one knows what the hell this thing is, just generalities. It would be nice if someone could get their hands on the supposed documentation that's flying around out there.

Nope, slim PS2 says otherwise.

Let me put this is simple terms then, no one with a non 4k TV is going to see ANY enhancement to ANY ps4 games running on their TV. Ever.

If you have a 4k TV then cool, the built in scaler tech will make it look good at that rez.

That's not how extra APU hardware power works

Kotaku said this is about games. Thats a done deal at this point and shouldn't really be up for debate anymore. They have the strongest track record in the entire industry over the past few years.

I'm sure media and the rest will be involved and nice additions, but if Kotaku said its about games, its about games.
Appeal to authority?

Patrick Klepek has gotten things wrong before (SonyTooTM!). He could have one or two important details wrong again. Until I hear from Sony or at least get my hands on something resembling actual evidence, like the documentation that he's talked about, or a photo of the prototype that he's talked about, this is still rumor and speculation.

Eurogamer corroborates everything in the Kotaku article. It specifically mentions more power as well.

Remember Kotaku never said the 4k gaming was native

Eurogamer didn't say anything about "more processing power that can enhance the games supported by PlayStation VR." In fact they don't mention PSVR at all.

The slim models almost always were moderately faster (about 10%).
As in games would run with 10% better framerate? That's never been the case with Sony's consoles that I can think of. The only instance of something like that happening with them was with PSP, where the 333Mhz CPU clock was still enabled for all the PSP models through a firmware update.

This new PS4 prototype almost assuredly has a faster CPU/GPU than what PS4 has, and not just new HDMI2.0 encoder chip or 4K bluray drive. What that extra hardware power is meant to be used for is another question.

Do you think Sony is going to sell you a ps4k for the price as a standalone 4k blu ray player?
They will, just as they've always done with PS hardware.

I just don't get it. There's very little in the way of content available in 4K. Even major films like The Force Awakens aren't getting a 4K release. So what, you want your games to be upscaled by a factor of 4? That'll look fantastic. I get that 4K TVs are gaining traction and people want media devices to support them, but the content and distribution of that content just isn't ready for 4K yet.

But really, I don't care if they put in 8K support as long as they don't add a performance boost for games.

I am excited about this news! I just got a 4k tv and and due to pick up a PS4 this year. Perfect timing if it comes out holiday 2016. I guess we'll find out at E3.
