Slain - A homage to gory hack-&-slash games of the 80's & 90's (Out now on PS4)

Already multiple GOG user reviews saying the controls are really sluggish/delayed.

That's a death knell for this kind of game.
I'm wondering if the controls are more responsive with a controller than a keyboard. Interested to see that question addressed.

Also, it has like three reviews. Too early for any sort of consensus.

EDIT:
Yep, maybe from the same guys and Steam forums are rarely the best place to get reliable impressions but I'll proceed with caution.
Ouch...

Damn that thread is depressing, no one seems to be trolling just offering honest opinions and it doesn't sound great.

Haven't played the final build but the alpha had very "heavy-feeling" controls; seemed like a deliberate design decision to me. I've been listening to the soundtrack for the past couple hours... 'tis cool. Has an unpolished vibe I dig.

Hm. Concerning. I'll probably play it a bit tonight/tomorrow and see how I feel about it.

Also, as someone who works in software development, this made me laugh:

If you were a beta tester, so how come you could let this game to be released?

Yeah, because that's who is ultimately responsible for what state something is released in.

The what I always expected. Kind of like blackthorn, but a lack of basic feedback cues sounds a little silly. Like said before me so cheap I might get regardless. But I'd like to temper my hopes.

I was really looking forward to this but Steam delays combined with bad first impressions is a bad, bad combo. Here's hoping it turns out to be good.

Are there difficulty settings? I have a 5 year old aspiring metal head that would love to play this haha but it may be too tough for him.

I can't play the game for a week and a half, so I'll take a wait and see approach... But I'm glad the game came out on GOG.

Still no steam release ...

I really hope this wasn't a product of feature creep

Here's hoping the gog patch fixes obvious shit like audio cues, my guess is it will.

I refuse to believe this won't be good.

Hmm, all this negative chatter and the fact that there's still no Steam release is really concerning.

I fully expected to be playing and loving this game at this exact moment.

Dude from the steam thread updated.
nick (one of the devs) has indicated that the current GOG build was released in error. My p/review is all based on that version, so take it with a grain of salt for now. Will update my impressions once I've played the most recent version of the game. Thanks to the devs for handling this so quickly.

Are you saying GOG released an early build of the game?

They were waiting on fixes from us but for whatever reason the game was launched. It's all in hand.

so that's why steam version aint up yet.
Here's hoping controls are fixed.

I thought GAF would be full of hands on impressions by now.

Still waiting on the key from humblebundle here. Also, the game has mysteriously only launched on GOG for some reason.

Really bummed out here, I've been waiting all day to give this game a spin.

6 hours left in the day, why hasn't this released yet besides GOG?

It wasn't launched on GOG. Apparently they released an older build there. Hence them adding a patch soon.

Steam should be releasing soon.

So it's likely when it's up on Steam it'll be the actual release build, will hold off freaking out until then.

Well impressions from GOG version

Sound levels are fucked. Music overpower FX. Dropping music lower than 8 somehow disables it. Checkpoints are broken. Saving doesn't work. There's no Quit Game in the main menu. Controls are fine, but I feel insanely underpowered. You have one slash move and a magic attack. Nothing else. It says use bombs to clear a room....how? Who fucking knows. None of the buttons on my gamepad. My heart is broken.

Edit: Wait. So this isn't even the final game? Wtf??

Supposedly GOG released an old build of the game, and the developers are uploading a fixed version now.

Seems like a 2016 game alright

I pre-ordered the game through Humble Bundle and it shows that I purchased it but it's not giving me a steam code or anything. Great.

Just played the GOG version myself.

The controls are very weird. First is the menu where everything was delayed a second or so, making navigating it sluggish. I missed the New Game button a couple of times before I finally understood this.

Once in the game, the first thing that stood out was that the character had a weird delay when trying to move him left or right. Pressing the button doesn't instantly make him move but you have to hold it for at least a second until he does. Meanwhile, other buttons like jump and attack worked perfectly fine and were instant.

The second thing that came out was that the sound is very weirdly mixed and possibly incomplete. The music was incredibly loud and drowned out everything else, but then when I turned it down, things got very silent. Some things doesn't even seem to have a sound effect like a trap of giant spears that instantly kills your character is completely silent, no sound effect or indication that your character dies, the music doesn't even change. It just goes to a "You have been SLAIN" screen with the music still going on full speed and back to the last checkpoint far back it is.

I don't think this game is ready, or if the posts above is to be believed, they possibly could have released a early version out of mistake. This was not very playable I can tell you that.

Its an older build.

This is coming from one of the developers themselves.
