Stellaris - Paradox Dev Studios new sci-fi grand strategy game

I can see now why Paradox went with the AI governing specific sectors after you've expanded beyond a certain point, managing the exploitation of resources within systems and the individual planet population tiles/upgrades looks like it'd be a micro management nightmare. Dude was being absolutely spammed with anomalies, diplomatic relations updates, and points of interest everywhere while trying to rush to wage war make lasting friendships with people.

Going to make mp games a hassle with all the prolonged pauses during ship design. Interface overall looks like a step up from previous Paradox titles.

There's an auto designer, I figure that'll handle the minor stuff pretty well. Only need to pause for a total priority shift, like stripping out shields or switching to a new weapon type.

Speaking of new weapon types, seeing stuff like plasma throwers was very comforting. I was worried that weapon progression was gonna be all "red lasers -> blue lasers" and "missiles 1 -> missiles 2". Torpedos and plasma throwers say otherwise though :D

oh yeah the stream confirmed that robots can be given equal rights to the point where you can get robot leaders.
Pretty cool. I wasn't expecting that.

Just finished the second Blorg stream replay. They're what, 2.5 hours in to a campaign, have explored some tiny portion of the galaxy and already like ten million things are happening. Good lord man this game...

Yep! And they were focusing on dealing with the party poopers so ignoring a lot. I would imagine in a normal game you'd want to do something about each of those alerts, but yeah, there's a lot to do in the early game! Everything that was happening was so much more interesting than what you'd typically be dealing with in a traditional 4X.

2.5 hours into MoO 2016 or Gal Civ 3, there's no way that a narrative like the Blorg's would have so naturally emerged from the underlying mechanics of the game.

They've discovered precursor ruins, made friends with space jelly fish, made rivals (you can actually make another faction a "rival" giving you bonuses to influence depending on their relative strength) of an empire that sneakily stole a few planets from right under them, had their chief exploring vessel pull a Voyager, by vanishing in unkown territory for a while, and laid waste to a group of zealots intent on eradicating life in the galaxy. During the military build up a pacifist faction of the population rose up and demanded it's independence, at least until it's leader was suddenly, and tragically killed in a terrible skiing accident....

And all of that even after ignoring half of what was actually happening. This game will consume our lives guys.

Also, this is amazing:

Any recommendations on other strategy titles to keep me from going crazy waiting for May 9th?

I picked up the MoO 2016 Alpha, but it's proving a bit shallow so far.

Only thing that's scratched my itch so far is Sword of the Stars. Semirandomized tech tree, a lot of different FTL types, huge divergence between races. It's not Stellaris, but it's pretty damn good.

Do NOT get the second one. Great ideas, utterly broken.

Great stuff.
The second stream was awesome. I'm happy to know there's a lot of things to explore and do.
I'm so torn over whether to watch this series or not.

Basically media blackout vs. excitement and learn some tips early kind of deal.

I thought they fixed that one?

Fanatic spiritualists, for sure. Looking forward to all the mods that will get made for this as well, I can see people adding stuff like the Mass Effect races very quickly.

I hope moving portraits will be moddable in, it'd suck if you could only create static ones.

Maybe since the last time I checked, but at that point the studio was working other things and since then they became basically defunct. I doubt it.

What is the music in that trailer reminding me of. It's on the tip of my tongue but I can't place it.

Mass Effect probably.

Mass Effect was the first thing I thought of too, and it just gave me overall vibes of classic sci-fi themes (70's early 80's sci-fi).

Man, everything about this game so far is perfect. I hope it comes out stable too, even if they need to push it back more. I don't think I'm exagerating when I say this could be a new (original) MoO.

Thanks! Gonna give it a shot. Need some to scratch that itch.

You should give a shot to Distant Worlds aswell. Game which is probably more complex than stellaris, better mineral gameplay but without good diplo as paradox do and a lot worse interface. Still excelent game and a lot fun to play it. :)

EU IV has some great music. Battle of Breitenfeld etc are suitably stirring and evocative as you smash your foes and spread your colour.

How is GalCiv 3?

I really loved GalCiv 2

co-oped it with a friend did not enjoy it. i am not sure if us loving galciv 2 was nostalgia or they just fucked up 3. Hopefully stellaris is better. There is master of orion 3. Also polaris sector just came out (no idea if its good) and endless legend 2. A lot of 4x space games lately. Hopefully some of them are good.

Just finished part two of the Blorg stream, this'll be the first Paradox strategy game I buy at launch. Not looking forward to spending loads on all of the DLC though, but I can think of a lot of cool things they can add in it.

I just want the ability to build something like a death star -_-

The game will be my solace as my little guy and wife will be visiting relatives in Germany from the early to late May. So I'll be sad and lonely, but at least I'll have Stellaris to look forward to :)

Superweapons are confirmed, IIRC.
