Star Ocean 5 character gets less-sexy underwear 'in Fear of Western Criticism'

Honestly though if my country's product was changed on the domestic market for fear of backlash from a foreign market I'd be pretty salty too.

Never forget.

I don't see why they had to change ANY version. Especially when Final Fantasy XIV proudly displays skimpy panties all over the place.

The weirdest thing in this kind of change is the absolute lack of consistency.
Sure it would be best if it wasn't changed in any version.
But this
あと,海外からミキについて「ティーンがセクシャルな下着を着けているのは良くない」という指摘があって,布の面積を増やしたりもしました 。
just annoys me. Why are people overseas telling them what to change and why does that change have to apply to the domestic version as well?

It's getting really hard to tell if serious or not with theses kind of posts.
Trying to manipulate camera angles to see the panties of my party members in JRPGs is one of the few things I enjoy in life.

This has happened before though.

Fallout 3 had a bunch of drug names changed to fictional ones worldwide because Australia was refusing classification due to depictions of drugs.

Hence, 'Med-X', and the inexplicable lore-breaking appearance of Jet.

Okay so if she isn't underage I don't see why this change was made... But if somehow the game sales are worse because of this in Japan... Then their priorities are fucked imho.

Literally all they had to do was not even say anything and no one would have noticed, not sure why they bothered mentioning it when it was obvious it would rile up a bunch of whiners.

Emm, I am not sure a "sexy" hidden panty where you have to purposely find the angles to see provokes western criticism... Since, you know, people who (try to) glance wouldn't complain.

If you have to ask then it's over a thousand years old minumum.

Please don't tell me her actual age if it's a spoiler I want to play Xenoblade in the future.

She's
88
and it's very mild spoiler, her people age
significantly slower
than Homs(equalent to human). And no she's not a "hundred-year-old dragon" stereotype since age stuff doesn't really play any part in the main story...

You don't think it's understandable to be turned off a product when it's clear the people behind it had so little faith in their work and regard for their fans that they're fully willing to butcher core content just because of the fear of backlash from a minority within a single market?

Panties. The core of Star Ocean 5's content.

It was really stupid of them to do this, because the character isn't even underage and literally no one in the west complained about it anyway. People bitched about Fiore, and they left her alone.

Also I kind of find this funny considering the newest Senran Kagura Versus came to the US without much controversy. I think?

I'm pretty sure that has characters that are far more sexualized and are even younger. I think. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Never forget.

Lol, I personally have no stake in the matter because I wasn't going to buy the game anyway, but I can understand why people are upset.

Were people upset by that as well?

Actually, I'm curious, who specifically told them to change it? Or was it just, "Westerners probably won't like this and account for significant sales so let's just change it even though the might not care either way" ???

Cause I barely see people complain about tity witch as it is.....

I feel like it's a weird storm in a glass of water.

Yeah, I'd probably edit it too when coming in america, because she looks like a teen, and that doesn't fly well here.

But it's common and okay in Japan, so why make the edit there? Actually, it's a cultural import, why make the edit at all?

Even though this post is tongue in cheek, it is sort of sad that they fear releasing it over here. It was really strange with that Destructoid import review. Their preview for the review already seemed they went at it with a really immature mindset and felt like they just got the game to blast it. They even doubled down on it after the fact when people even on GAF spoke out against the review (the reviewer is also a gaffer). It was really strange that the Christian game site that reviewed DOAX3 seemed to go at it a much more critical and analytical angle than Destructoid, which is basically a mainstream gaming site.

Biggest eye roll moment of last week was that Destructoid review.

Senrans have controversey, but ultimately, they're for a very specific niche of people, and they don't give a shit about an audience beyond what they're aiming for. Because it doesn't make sense.

Star Ocean has more integrity than to make people lack faith in that aspect.

No one did, they changed it of their own volition because of their thought of "Western backlash".

As mentioned, this was literally something they never had to mention and no one would have known. The game isn't even out yet.

Like anyone's really going to bother trying to get an upskirt on Miki when there's Fiore to watch walk around. That's such a completely innocuous thing to change. I doubt a single person in the west would have said anything about Miki's panties if they had never changed them in the first place.

The original Japanese mentions "feedback from abroad," which probably means either Square Enix US or EU.

In this Thread: Lots of people complaining about shadowy "Americans" ruining the the sexy teen panties that literally nobody has ever talked about ever. This is the weirdest non-issue. If the designer had said nothing nobody would have even noticed.

From the outside, it is odd how western people criticize sexuality in games, while our games are more violent and that violence goes generally uncriticized. We've laughed the critics of violence (Jack Thompson) out of the room in our culture.

I've said it before, but I see the puritan instinct as alive and well in what Americans choose to be offended over. And the "wild west" instinct selectively allows violence to pass.

It used to be that conservatives were obsessed over curtailing sexuality in previous decades.

Now it's the liberals who are obsessed over curtailing "sexualization" (a rose by any other name).

I ain't even mad about it (SJWs hrrrrrrr!!!!) but I'm just saying: we are a weird culture guys.

That's kind of what I wonder as well tbh. I mean take something like DOAX 3 the only people that are even going to buy that game are a very small niche market. Its not like you're losing sales really.

Or even a non-sexual example Yakuza 3. Again same thing the audience that wants that game wants it for specific reasons. You're not really going to break mainstream appeal with the game so why try?

The thing that I don't get about this comment is that 1) I see almost no difference in those screenshots and 2) They still (presumably) have that green-haired witch in the game, which seems incoherent with their concerns about the West.

Full disclosure: I hate that character and wish they'd change her design too.

Violence in games stems from conflict being the centerpiece of most games.

It's still arguable that violence is a bigger harm to society than sexuality, regardless of how its rationalized. The point is that the western media seems to disproportionately go after games that feature one aspect and not the other.

No it says in the interview that someone from over seas had said to.

Yeah, that's what I'm curious about? Like, obviously no consumer knew enough to care about the panties aspect so clearly someone in marketing in management in a Western branch was like, "Yeah maybe you should change this." Why bother even making it public? They could have just never mentioned it and nobody would have been the wiser.

Is there some law about hiding panty alterations in Japan I never heard about? LOL.

Seems to be Square Enix erring (a whole lot) on the side of caution here. Pretty much like Nintendo does.

This is also sort of where I'm coming from. Like, I'll be frank, I don't think anyone was having heavy discussions about too skimpy panties in Star Ocean 5, nor do I think anyone was even thinking about it. This is a case where all the outrage is by him mentioning it. I don't think a single westerner has ever brought it up (I haven't seen anyone mention it), and I don't think anyone would of noticed the change if they didn't mention it.

I almost want to think they purposely mentioned it to bring up media attention, since censorship and woman treatment in games are big debates right now.
