Star Ocean 5 character gets less-sexy underwear 'in Fear of Western Criticism'

If they said nothing, no one would have noticed. If they didn't change anything, no one would have cared.

That Square Enix shot themselves in the foot meme has been posted 4 times already, but it's apt.

quote so it doesn't get lost; the "official reason" feels dubious as hell.

I guarantee you no one would have paid enough attention to make a complaint. That's not even a stand-out feature of the character.

the bravely second native american?
the project zero optional costumes obtained after finishing the game 4 times?
fire emblems optional swimsuits?

Looking at the change (which is quite subtle and minor) I'm quite indifferent no feelings either way, that said there real thing that needs censoring is her face! jesus those gif's are creeping me the hell out! its like some sort of doll brought to life

Such a pointless and small change. I don't even really care but to call attention to it in this manner, over such a few pixels, seems just to be stirring the pot. Passive aggressive devs?

Nyop, only seems to increase sales (Dragon's Crown, DOAX3, Senran Kagura)

I honestly haven't decided whether to believe Japanese companies haven't figured this out, or if this is a lazy, cynical way to increase sales without any real effort. Just point at the mean feminist boogeyman, and watch the puppets riot.

This is getting absurd. Why can you have fully nude sex scenes in a game like the Witcher, yet panties in this game are apparantly too far?

Different games with different ratings looking for different audiences. One is a gritty medieval sword and sorcery epic aimed for adult men. One is a light-hearted anime JRPG aimed at teens of no specific gender.

Clearly we can't handle them changing and chopping when it comes to underwear, they should just take it out altogether. All parties win.

Sorry, but the bonus picture makes me mad. Shows why Japan is a country where institutionalized sexism is still a thing. Oh well, we'll be over here where our birth rate isn't declining because of 2-D complexes.

Some liberal or swj probably saw the screenshot and got all their swj and liberal friends to email square. Swjs are a cancer to society

I suspect a femist Tubmlr campaign

what's next? BURGAS for all the adult women who are at least 18????? (it says so in her character bio btw)

Are we talking about those? No? That's right we're not.

What? No one complained. No one would have even noticed something as minor as this. That's why this decision to announce this change is hilarious

that applies to all those cases too. no one complained about those, but devs felt the need to change them. this one in star ocean is very minor and it feels to me it's done almost to get some articles about it, as already said the "outrage" help sales but the other cases aren't minor at all

damn! tell em bout it

Japan is one of the most misogynistic, sexist developed countries in the world. If I were a woman, certainly wouldn't want to live there. Hopefully Japanese men will start caring more about woman as a actual human beings rather than seeing 16 year olds skimpy underwear.

Edited out because In retrospective I didn't ponder this enough, and I don't want to derail the thread with posters constantly quoting this idiotic post. I've been shown I'm not fit to discuss in topics like these and even if what I posted here weren't my words (and I don't endorse or condone their views, I wanted to remain neutral) but just things I've read about online, it was still ignorant and disconsiderate of me. I am sincerely sorry. I'll see myself out of the thread, thank you.

Pre-order canceled and will picked the game up used in a few months.

This shit is getting out of hand.
It is okay to murder in games but a little sexy/sex/nudity and people start flipping out. Seriously I do not understand.

An outfit was slightly redesigned for both the original japanese game and the localized one. S-E has already done this with other games (Birth By Sleep comes as an example). If the size of this 18 year old girl's panties actually mattered or had any function in the final game, they wouldn't have changed it.

Except that Nomura changed Aqua's(confident that she's no less than 18) exposed back design because he "thought" Disney, owners of Ariel and Jasmine, would tell him to change it. We don't know what Disney would have said. Different situation from this SO5 article that involves petty idiots getting the developer to change their vision. Not only that, when they decide to censor it, it wasn't just the western version, but the Japanese version as well. That ain't right.

As for the bold: fixed.

It all plays into the perpetuation of the current situation though, doesn't it? Japan is one of the lowest ranked countries on the planet in terms of gender equality and "fanservice" like this all feeds into Japanese society's views on women.

Nintendo thought they were giving us "fanservice" with Metroid Other M but they ended up stamping on one of the most revered female characters in gaming. Maybe they should put the fan service lower down on the list of priorities and go from there. That a developer even had to mention this change tells you the importance they have attached to it.

that's the point,i don't think it contributes to the problem at all.
japanese society has its problems with how the view the "gentle gender",that's indeniable..but i don't see fanservice as either something that adds of subtracts to the problem..is just something pretty to get aroused about for males ..how those males see females doesn't depend from that,it depends from other aspects of the japanese culture and it's there that people should intervene...not censoring panties on a virtual character

as for the whole good or bad fan service,it literally means "something to please the fans",so it can be sexual or non sexual in nature,it depends on the demographic..otaku like their scantily dressed heroines and thus if you wanna make fan service for them you put those scantily clad ladies in the game..nintendo fans needed another kind of fanservice, something that played on what the demographic liked about the series/character
in the end,if you do it right, fanservice sells copies,so it will never be low on the list of priorities

Sometimes I wonder why I've been posting more on OT side lately. Then I remember its because there are still a sizable number of people on gaming side who think this is a cogent or intelligent thing to post.

Japan is a country where institutionalized sexism is still a thing because of a couple of japanese 4chan equivalent forum posts?

Well sorry, but you ohrased it like it was a bad thing. Maybe devs should stop phrasing it like it's a bad thing and they might instead get a pat on the back and be considered a bit more sensitive. Maybe they'll be taken more seriously in the future if they changed their attitude about pre-emptive changes. Otherwise it'll always look like hilariously bad manufactured outrage.

That's cool.

Sorry, but the bonus picture makes me mad. Shows why Japan is a country where institutionalized sexism is still a thing. Oh well, we'll be over here where our birth rate isn't declining because of 2-D complexes.

Actually they are declining for the exact same reasons, which is that people have a lot of sex but they can't or don't want to afford children so they choose not to have them.

What we see as misoginystic and sexist here, is different there. I won't say it's right or wrong as I never like to choose sides on these discussions as every culture has different values, but I always try to "get in their shoes" in every culture. Be it eastern, western, etc.

And Japanese men certainly love and care about their women, perhaps too much. This probably doesn't happen that much in the more urbanized areas anymore:

They won't let women do certain things not because of misogyny, but because they don't want to see them get hurt.

It's the men that after getting paid at work, get home and the first thing they do is give their money to the women so they can control the family expenses.

And yet this is the same country that has segregated train cars because guys can't keep their hands to themselves.

And the same country where women get forced out of jobs for getting pregnant.

Don't get me wrong, I still want to visit Japan in the coming years, but there's no denying how deep the sexism runs in Japanese society.

Is TEENS GONE SEXUAL the mantra with some Japanese games? Like, is that what those Japanese gamers are fighting for, teens to be sexualised? What a hill to die on.

It's funny that nichegamer is given a spotlight in OP, the popular gamergate breeding ground. Gators seem to be so easily outraged over any changes made by devs that happen to a game that have to do with sexualisation (but have no problem if it's anything else).

Sexism doesn't have to come from a place of malice to still be sexism.

Also, I am super fucking tired of this relativist nonsense being used to excuse cultures of problems. I grew up in Malaysia, where there are a ton of social issues, from LGBT rights to racism to freedom of and from religion. It is NOT an excuse to say, "Oh, that's just their culture," and pretend it's not a fucking problem.

Every post industrial society's birth rate is getting lower.

Sad seems like a certain group needs to be coddled at all times. Keep it mom approved I guess. Those evil Japanese need to strive for true enlightenent.

Guess shame until they conform strategy really worked.

Holy shit, Anders Breivik has a Gaf account! What's an "swj" though? Is that some kooky new Norwegian jailhouse slang?

Angry YouTube pundits are probably frothing from the mouth right now over all the clicks they'll get from their next outrage video about imaginary sjw outrage.

"remove it for everyone" uh, why not just give optional costumes? i would be okay with that, everyone is happy
Fiore's design isn't optional, now is it? That's her main costume, and is supposed to be the design that represents her as a character.

And the problem with thinking "it's okay it's optional" is that surely, there's a line to be drawn somewhere? If it were a 13 year old, the panty peeping would suddenly be creepy and unacceptable compared to peeping on an 18 year old? I don't think panty peeping as an activity is acceptable altogether, regardless of age. The idea that a developer thought, "oh, a player might panty peep, we should put in some nice panties" is normalizing the idea that female characters should have panties to peep rather than questioning the act of peeping itself.

It's hardly an innocent optional activity. If you're going to have control over the whole player experience, why would you include this kind of activity? Why should this be acceptable because it is 'optional'?

"Perhaps too much" lolwut

Japan sounds pretty sexist, from what you just wrote. Women not allowed to think or act for themselves, would be compared to Saudi Arabia of all places.

probably because this character looks like a child.

Where do you live? I wanna make sure I never go there. If children look like that there, it's fucking terrifying.

She does not look like a child, nor she looks like a human being. She looks like she wants to eat my soul and lay waste to the multiverse. Her face is downright lovecraftian!
