Star Ocean 5 character gets less-sexy underwear 'in Fear of Western Criticism'

I grow weary of the games I'm interested in getting edited or censored in ways due to those uncomfortable with such content in the West.

Star Ocean 5 is another game added to the list of games I'm not buying I guess.

Because no one cares about this outside of people wanting to throw an internet tantrum? Why does it changes anything with the game that a skirt is longer? If you were planning to get the game this really doesn't change a thing. It's nothing worthwhile and has been happening in games for a while. Sprites were altered since like SNES games because they were too revealing or religious and no one threw a fit over those.

But for a few month now this has been a hot topic. With all that has happened with Zoe Quinn and Anita Sarkeesian it's really easy to rile up a controversy.

Then again, back during the SNES days most people in the West would be blissfully unaware of anything being edited.

Don't worry i'm sure there are many people in Japan who were uncomfortable with it too.

Pathetic. SImply put, pathetic. In case of Star Ocean 5, you can hardly even notice the difference, there's pretty much no censorship, just the character is running around with slightly less thong-y underwear than before. Unless you're a perv trying to sneak a peek, you wouldn't even notice it.. -_-

This shit is always overblown. Leave the shit as is. I means it's ok to chainsaw someone but, jiggle boobs or tight underwear is the worse thing ever?

You're going to boycott a game because they changed underwear.

OK.

I was quite specific in my use, citing examples it's likely most people would consider pretty ridiculous stances. SJW is used to describe the radical extreme who create issue where there really is none, which was how I intended it and seems incredibly relevant to the topic at hand.

Maybe in its beginnings, but the way its generally used now, radical extreme can be anything under the sun. Theres a reason why actual bigots use that term a ton

Sure, actual assholes use the term, but I think it's a valid shorthand for "people who take it too far." Obviously, one needs to explain it beyond that when they use the term, but I don't think there's anything inherently wrong with the term.

This is getting pretty ridiculous.... Not that the censor matters, you hardly even notice it. But the fact that something as trivial as this is getting blown up in proportion because of recent topics about western criticism towards nudity in games.

Can we get back to the days of criticizing the newest GTA games because of the violence? At least that made somewhat sense.

Man are getting really weird these days with how much booty they aren't able to see anymore in video games. WOW!

I agree, couldn't have said it better myself.

Whole game ruined by like 20 pixels. RUINED!

Right?

You could also say "I think you've gone too far", instead of just blending in with assholes.

This change is especially baffling because no one that would criticize it would be happy with the change. They missed the criticism of gratuitous panty shots entirely.

Such an extreme reaction for an insignificant change. I guess you were never interested in the game in the first place.

I don't think even DOAX fans would argue that it's a good video game. The purpose of DOAX is not being a good game, it's to have almost naked girls.

I was.
I find it strange that people assume that a characters panties are important to me or something like that when I complain and/or choose to not buy games due to changes like this. Its not that I think someone's panties are important or even clothing in general are important. I've done this for many games in the past (FE Fates/Awakening, Xenoblade Chronicles X, Fatal Frame 5, Bravely Default) as well that I was interested or even excited for. Its actually that I'm incredibly disappointed that I won't be buying these games (and now Star Ocean 5). It sucks, because I really want to play it. But I cannot bring myself to support any game that gets content cut or edited from it either post-release or out of fear of how people would react. I feel as if its harmful to the game industry as a whole, and is more about the principle of the thing to me than really the content itself. Its almost never really about the content itself.

you know, a lot of games have a lot of things cut in fear of how people will react. we just don't hear about it. you probably shouldn't buy any games then.

This literally does nothing but rob you of having fun.

You have a really naive view of the creative process if you don't think this happens to basically every game ever made.

That game has been getting terrible reviews in japan too.. You don't have to be a westerner to find it shit.
Same thing happened to Bravely Second and Tales of Zestiria. I guess those are also trash?

Amazon reviews aren't a trustworthy source. That article is basically clickbait meant to fan the flames.

In any case your post doesn't address the fact that we do have some western press going out of their way to cover games they normally wouldn't.

The problem is, most dont and just use it whenever something related to social justice is being discussed that they dont agree with. What was once a term that possibly only encapsulated a select few is now generally used as a broad brush. You see it all the time in OT.
