My room is already small enough (2.3x1.9m) :(

I don't want to make it even smaller.

You may have to resign yourself to a standing/sitting VR experience, as that sounds awfully small for "roomscale". Luckily the Vive seems to handle those experiences just as well as it does bigger spaces.

I live with my parents so wall mounting is already out of the question for me. Isnt there some 3M product thats used for sticking heavier objects to walls?
Today i reserved two of those:

You can clench it between floor and ceiling, so it's a great way to temporary and fast build up a virtual playground.

If you attach a pad on it to increase the tape area its possible, but not reaaaally secure.

The lighthouses aren't that lightweight and (because of its rotor) they vibrate a little, so its only a matter of time for them to fall down if sticked.

In the end i wall mount them anyway. Its much more safe and easy to modify its position. Peace of mind.

You know what I am seeing here initially is the back to basic gameplay that we had in arcades in the early eighties for alot of this room scale stuff. Which to start off will be great. I am sure as the tech matures we will get more complex stuff but this back to basics is actually refreshing.

The real question is when does tron come out? =p

Opposite side of that coin is that developers will not have enough incentive to explore VR space beyond the back to basics if the install base is too small and will not warrant a return on their investment. This is the most likely scenario imo.

Exploration doesn't require AAA budgets. Super high production values and grand scales increase cost, but innovation on the software side is actually quite cheap. Particularly when virtually nothing has been explored.

Yeah. Until there is a larger userbase I agree. But I am ok with that. Not every game has to be EVE. Also with the rise of the indie devs out there look for alot of different stuff. I really am not worried about it.

What are you guys getting for lighthouse stands? I don't want to mount on walls so looking into stand solutions.

I picked up some cheap tripods with the ball swivel adapter so I can angle them in any direction.

Very easy to set up. I think max height is something like 9ft although I'd be a little concerned with vibration/shaking of the tripod at that height.

Screen based video games are by their nature abstractions. I think one of the issues people see in VR is that most of those abstractions go away. Without explaining much you could bowl, play darts, play pool and most of those abstractions don't need to exist with the Vive.

Grab by your hip to pull a gun, grab by your back to pull a sword. Reload by releasing a virtual magazine into your virtual gun.

All that stuff used to be taken care of by a separate button and now you would play those sorts of games or take those actions just like you would in real life.

Disc wars could completely exist in a large enough tracking space with basically 0 abstractions (You'd probably need some tracked ankle bracelets I suppose.)

How high up do the lighthouses need to be? Can I just place them on top of my tower speaker and my rear channel speaker across from one another, or do they have to be very high?

Some guy on YouTube did a bunch of different heights and found out as long as they see you there isn't much difference. There shouldn't be any occlusion as long as they see the headset
Look up vr mythbusting and the uploader is Brad Lynch I believe. Can't link it myself right now

The reason a high mounting position is suggested is so that the line of sight between the lighthouses is never interrupted. This is so that the synchronization pulse makes it through.

From tests it turned out that in most setups it still works just as well if the pulse is reflected off something, but it's better to be on the safe side if at all possible.

I want it sooooo badly! Last time I was that hyped was before the Halo 3 release. May is so far away :O

One question though. Do I have to recalibrate it each time while switching vom seated setup to room scale? I mean my desk is a virtual wall in room scale mode but I want also to play games like Elite.

Question about the Lighthouses for anyone who has set them up or knows about them....Do they have to be pointed directly at each other in order to sync properly, or can they be at different angles as long as they can sort of see each other? I have a space I'm planning on using for roomscale, but I'd also like to be able to use the Vive on my desk for seated/cockpit games, which is slightly off to the side of this VR area.

Here's a rough approximation of what I'd like to do:

X is where I would sit at my desk. Any issues with this setup in syncing or tracking, or should I be golden? Both of the lighthouses will be mounted high, ~7ft high on the walls. Tried to be conservative with the FOV of the lighthouses, but I've heard that they spread a pretty wide beam.

You are being far too conservative, the lighthouse FoV is 120° horizontally and vertically. (Like this)

And no, as far as I understand the principle (and I hope I do, I spent a lot of time reading about them ;)) they don't need to face each other directly.

They don't have to face each other directly, but his setup leaves a corner of the play area tracked by only one lighthouse. That's a no-go. Either the lighthouse needs to be angled to not hit the desk, or the play area has to be shrunk or flipped 90 degrees. Also, the desk area is tracked from behind. That's not going to be useful with the Vive if he plans on using it facing the monitor.

Edit: Actually might catch the edges of the headset's sensors at the desk at any rotation, but it's closer to theoretical maximums than I'd want for an ideal placement.

No, i setup them almost off angle (from facing each other) and works great.

I'll readily admit that it's not an ideal setup, just trying to figure out if I can kill two birds with one stone. Otherwise I'll just have to sit on my couch for all my seated VR experiences, which will work, but won't be as ideal for HOTAS/Wheel cockpit games for me.

And if Durante's 120° FOV for the lighthouses is correct (I'm sure it is ;)), that would only leave a tiny corner of that space to only 1 lighthouse, so I'm not too worried.

It doesn't really, his illustration uses too small FoV angles for the lighthouses.
Looks like 120 degrees to me being used in that image. At least if my paper method is holding up here at work lol.

Is there any reason the lower lighthouse can't just be placed in the lower corner of the room where the desk is?
