Looks like 120 degrees to me being used in that image. At least if my paper method is holding up here at work lol.
It was actually 110° according to my highly sophisticated method (using a Geodreieck [which seems to have no appropriate English translation] on my monitor) ;)

I have a rather small space to use a vive, like minimum requirements. Problem with stuffing a desk large enough for 6 monitors, and a 50" TV with a futon into the same room. Ill try it out for a bit and if its just too small Ill do something to be able to play in the living room. Not sure how I will accomplish that yet, but I'll cross that bridge when I come to it

Is there any reason the lower lighthouse can't just be placed in the lower corner of the room where the desk is?

seconded, you should put it in that corner if you can- if you're worried your monitor will occlude too much when you're sitting at the desk, it wont, I have the same scenario here and it works great.

Mostly cosmetic really, I have a sliding glass door going out to my patio on that wall, and the location of the orange box in that picture is where the mounting bracket for the vertical blinds is attached. No extra wall mounts and a less obtrusive placement for the lighthouse is what I'm hoping for there. But if I have to I have to, thanks all for the advice!

Some guy on YouTube did a bunch of different heights and found out as long as they see you there isn't much difference. There shouldn't be any occlusion as long as they see the headset
Look up vr mythbusting and the uploader is Brad Lynch I believe. Can't link it myself right now

Great info! Thank you. This needs to be reiterated when it launches.

It's both pleasing and killing me at the same time that there's no video of Vanishing Realms online. Just really good word of mouth. Developed by a single ex-Valve dev (#5 ever to be employed at firm). Seems like he's playing his cards right.

Outside of protractor talk, I noticed the AR15 guy (now officially the Hot Dogs, Horseshoes and Hand Grenades guy) put out a full run through of the stuff he's done so far. I don't remember coming across anything mentioning it, so I'll just drop a link here for anybody that's interested.

To think this came from one guy in one month...

So how important is having a 2D computer monitor in the same room as this thing?

My situation is exactly like the one Durante diagramed on the last page, with an old analog CRT TV where the VR room control board is on that diagram, and I'm not sure if it's worth getting that TV set up with my computer.

Protractor?
Nope, for one that's not triangular :P

And a set square?

Maybe, but if I google that I get this or this. But I mean this.

Now let's get back to our standard VR talk :P

I think doing the setup and the various small stuff in between games without one would be very annoying. Probably doable, but annoying.

So just for shits and giggles I tried the Steam VR readiness app on my ancient eight year old 'gaming' pc in the attic.

Turns out my CPU is in the green, only the gpu needs to be replaced?!

Surely an eight year old AMD Phenom II X4 955 shouldn't be good enough (let alone in the green)? Or did CPU power change so little over time? I guess it is a quad core at 3.2Ghz.

I'm not going to risk buying a €700 card for my venerable piece of shit, but if prices go down in the future..

The performance test doesnt test the CPU as far as I know

Valve has said that test isn't very hard on CPUs, like at all.

That was glitching a lot. Guy with selfie stick occluding a lighthouse, or the panel lights they're using for filming?

Those were also the older Vive controllers, so this might be all older hardware they're using, and possibly older software as well. Wouldn't draw too many conclusions from it, especially when most recent Tiltbrush demos out there appear to be pretty rock-solid. But occlusion could have also had something to do with it.

sofa bed collected. Lots more space now. will spend the weekend rearranging some more. Would be nice if I could move the exercise bike somewhere else.

Definitely debating how i'll end up setting this all up. I could fit it in my room if I take apart my bedframe and have the mattress on the floor, but that's a bit on the tacky side.. The family room would work but then I gotta haul my PC setup back and forth.

does anyone know if mirrors will confuse the lighthouses?
got my pre-order in...have begun clearing a space in my room for it- but I've just thought that perhaps the big mirrors on my wardrobe might make things difficult... maybe I'll have to put a sheet over them.

Latest reports are they have fixed potential issues with mirrors... (Sorry, far too lazy to find a source...)

Supposedly, but the less highly reflective surfaces the system has to contend with, the better I'd imagine. Best to have a backup plan just in case.

What about sunlight coming from big windows? Will I need to close the curtains?

I wouldn't imagine there'd be a problem. You'd have to saturate the infrared side to the point where the lasers are drowned out by the sun to make the tracking not work. That said, it's not like closing the curtains while using the Vive would be that big of a deal.

So my SteamVR rating put me at 6.9 (High) which is one third of the way up the green ready bar. I have an i5-4690K CPU, 8GB RAM, and a GTX 970. To be clear, I'd only need to upgrade my video card to get max out the SteamVR ready bar, right? If so, I'm thinking of upgrading in May or whenever the new cards come out.

I went from a 6.9 to a 7.9 by overclocking the GPU. This was with a mildly overclocked 3570k @4GHz and a GTX970

Thanks for mentioning that! I've never overclocked before but just looked into it. I was pretty modest with overclocking the GPU and ended up with a new SteamVR rating of 7.8 (from 6.9). I think I'll leave it there for now.

By the way, I didn't change the core voltage, only the power limit (maxed that). How much of a effect does this have on the power available for the Vive?

What changed between the old vive controllers and the new ones?

thats basically all I did too. 970 is a nicely overclockable GPU. It'll just mean you have a little more headroom to play games at a stable framerate - and it should give you a nice boost in any other games you play on your PC too :)

A lot. General style, optical sensor locations, grip button adjustments, dual stage trigger, reinforced build quality, IMU location within the controller changed to offset errors produced by the haptic feedback. Probably more things that I'm not aware of.

Nice, do the Vive Pre's come with the old controllers or the new ones?

All those major changes. They're the ones that have a ring around the top instead of something that looks like Aztec/Egyptian architecture. There might be some minor tweaks between the Pre and retail controllers, but none that I'm aware of offhand.

I have an i4690k and a gtx970 MSI

Where do i start if i was interested in ocing my GPU before the Vive comes?

I'm a complete noob in this stuff, mind you
