Sounds like it will be a PS4 model that will get you closer to PC performance, if that's what you're looking for. If not, then you stay with your current PS4 and you'll still be able to play all the same games.

I expect MS to announce something very similar.
 
As some people have said in the thread while 2x is a pretty decent boost it's not PS3 to PS4 level. It's more likely PS4K enhanced games will have a few prettier effects and textures, 900p games will run at 1080p, and/or a game that targets 30fps with some dips will be able to more solidly be 30fps. The difference isn't going to be Shadow of Mordor PS3 to Shadow of Mordor PS4 or anything that insane.
 
Man this generation is gonna be a pain if you are a developer.

X1 which is the weakest. Then you have a PS4, slightly more powerful. Then a PS4k which is way more powerful. Then the NX which could be any fucking thing. And MS might do a Xbox 1.5 which could be anything as well.

Soooo much extra work for basically fuck all. And then you will have people bitching cause the console they just bought is showing shitty graphics compared to whats they can get soon.
 
Getting some Sega vibes here. Splitting the user base is dangerous stuff.

That said, I wasn't planning on buying a PS4, but if the current PS4 model gets a nice price cut when the 4k model arrives, I might buy one.

You can max almost all games today with 6 year old hardware. CPUs, for the most part, have stopped really improving in a way that matters. The only thing you really have to upgrade these days is the GPU, in which case you can get one for the same price a new PS4 would cost you. You can literally have a 7 year old build, put a new GPU there and max almost anything. RAM is also ridiculously cheap these days.

Sony better do that knowing MS will do the same so they don't take all of the storm. This year is probably going to be the peak of the PS4 (next year maximum) but they want it to keep the momentum so they release a new console like this.

I would hope this model would at least last longer than the first PS4. Another upgrade in just 2-3 years will break me.

The only reason I think is maybe PSVR is going to suck on regular PS4? Tempted to bail on it. Will wait until E3 though before being brash.
 
Interesting if true, since the people championing this decision thought just frame-rate upgrades would be common, yet the people worried about their recent purchase being left with significant drawbacks compared to the 4K would be right in this case.

Can't water down what won't exist. They will be climbing an uphill battle for prime 3rd party support after Wii U. I imagine we'll only see indie support in its first year or so and maybe one brave regular publisher who will make dance games for it.
 
I don't know if this has been posted before, but Sony is launching a 4K streaming service . A move that complies with the K craze.

Meanwhile, Sony cannot come fast enough and settle this because I can't believe these rumors will not hurt her until E3, where I believe they will just show a revision of PS4 with 4K playback capabilities.
 
I don't know how to feel about this. Might be the greatest move in gaming, or might backfire so hard in Sony's face.

The reason NN3DS is like it is is different target audience of handhelds.
  • Less people overall
  • Very few actual tech "over"-enthusiasts
  • Japanese developer focus (didn't like HD development etc.)

None of these apply to PS4K. Nevertheless, we got a pretty good spectrum of how things can go with updated hardware:
  • Devs ignoring new power overall and focusing on features like controls
  • Devs creating a few exclusives when they found that to be needed for the game to work*
  • Devs using some super-duper-secret firmware mode that ditches some of the general system functions on older model to maintain sensible performance*
  • Devs throwing in sensible features like faster loading
  • Devs releasing a game that runs badly on old model

The nature of audience and developers on PS4 leads me to believe we are going to see way more of the last point on PS4K, especially if "asterisked" points will be prohibited or not provided by Sony.

Hmm, a $400 GPU upgrade will invariably give you significantly higher performance than an entire new box for a sum total of $400. (Also, you are completely ignoring online fees)

Going from 30FPS to solid 60FPS would, in the general case, require twice the sequential CPU performance. That seems quite unlikely.

The philosophy of throwing hardware at the problem is for PC. Nothing wrong with that philosophy, but it's directly opposed to what a console has been for the last 30 years. Wow, you nailed it my friend. The whole point of consoles being locked down systems is it pushed developers to be creative to overcome shortcomings of the hardware. Or sometimes in the vein of Nintendo make mechanics no one knew they wanted.

You'll never see something like Dreams on PC. I guess you could say mine craft, but it a pals in comparison in what you can do creatively.

If console becomes like PC where developers just rely on blunt force processing, instead of finding unique ways to render something different, or change scale and mechanics that suites the situation, your going to see more games be about graphics and not about play,

Juts my outlook on it. Everyone who see's this as a positive way forward, I'll wait till articles 6 or so years from now start talking about the industry getting stale, and even more studios going out of business because their pretty game didn't sell well.

Or the opposite where developers barely take advantage of PS4K's increased performance ability, and people pay a premium for a more expensive console without much benefit.

While some people may disagree, I also feel Sony is a highly reactionary company that tries to get into a business they think will be a success as soon as their competitor gets going.

If you look at things like PlayStation Move or PSVR, they're very closely modeled after announced/existing products.

And yes, I feel their hardware/price point combination was 80%+ of what won them this generation, so keeping that is probably a pretty huge objective at the company.
 
Taking out the hype and big words, its probably a 1.5x to 1.75 of overall perfomance increase. No big deal if you think about it.

Also I expect lots of old games to stop working with the new model or with lots of crash reports.

Chill and don't hype this to the roof.
