My personal guess (and this is a guess) would be that they heard from developers that Microsoft was doing this, decided they had to do this to not be behind on hardware quality for three years, and then decided on the specific 4K angle because it fit really well with their 4K television push this Fall even if it makes zero sense from a game perspective.

Absolutely this. They have 4K TV's to sell.. what better chance than to ride on the success of the PS4, especially if the competition is also planning on doing the same.

It also allows them to lower the price on the PS4Peasant edition for emerging markets without devaluing the brand.

PC games (and many console games) are designed to be tweaked based on the hardware target.

Stop being so dense. Sony and MS are moving towards games with different profiles that run across different hardware.

Forza 5 was originally developed on a PC running on DirectX12. The final X1 build somehow magically ran at 60fps locked. It's amazing, lol.

We are already seeing multiplatform games not being properly optimized for the Xbox One, you think they are going to give a crap about optimization when they have to support 4 consoles instead of just 2? I highly doubt it, and history shows it's probably what's going to happen.

Edit: 5 actually, if you count PSVR.

Fuck you, Sony. I'm going full PC next gen.

You won't go pc and here's why. You like the console experience. If anything the cost will be higher on pc. Users essentially need to pay ~$400+ for a new video card every couple years. Getting a completely new console for $400-500 is not a bad deal at all. Then throw in the fact that on pc you'll have to eventually upgrade your processor and motherboard.

Everything equal, console gaming is still cheaper if that's your concern.

It's funny that this outrages people. Sony is giving you (potentially) better framerates, better resolutions and better graphics and people are....angry about this? What...? I get not wanting to pay for something new but the experience will be objectively better in all aspects.

Great news. Bring on the upgrade!

Those "considerable" downgrade news, I choose to see it as "still PS4 quality but not near the awesome quality of the PS4K". If I'm wrong, they fuck their user base = Bad news.
But if I'm right, stop crying and get back to life.

Not sure why they are chasing 4k in the same year as VR

Ps4 success making them bullish

They make money on every PS4 hardware sold. And they will be making money on EVERY PSVR headset sold.

I love Playstation, but clearly this is a move of over confidence. They have the money now so they are saying, "Why not"?

In all seriousness. How many devs do people think are gonna go back and release patches on their games to up performance for the PS4K?

How many games will be made exclusively for the PS4K and in turn run/look like shit for regular PS4??

Naughty Dog will give TLOU an update and we'll all love it to death.

If it's really only $400, then I'm on board. Sooo ready to retire my loud, bulky launch PS4.

Could it be really less noisy if it's more powerful but smaller? I bailed out of PS4 after Bloodborne, because I couldn't take the noise anymore especially for games with lowkey sound/music like that (and the games I'm interested in aren't coming until later this year). I'd definitely jump in for something with normal fan/hardware noise and wouldn't even give a shit about the other advantages, lol

why people dont want an upgrade is beyond me.

you dont want the best looking games? having a 10 years cycle is shit and makes the PS4 outdated.

shorter cycles is the future and I am all for it.

Even with a GPU that's twice as good, I don't see it running games at 4K. I doubt this PS4K thing is even real, but if it is, they should just allow you to run 1080p at 60fps.

Nintendo is going to save people by abandoning the console that isn't even 3 and a half years old yet. It was such a disaster Nintendo had to kill it off early and now folks are jumping at the chance to throw money at them? Wheres the Wii U upgrade program to NX for all the folks who got burned buying it?

The Wii U is the Wii U. Killing it off early is the smart business move and I say this as someone who bought the system on day 1. I'm ready for the next big thing considering everything surrounding it.

The PS4 is the leading console that most people participating in this gen own. That is why there's a difference. More people stand to feel like they're being burned as early adopters.

The Wall Street Journal implied they might be keeping the regular PS4 as a cheaper model in their primary markets as well.

Thats certainly a possibility. There have been whispers of an upgraded Xbox for a while, and if anyone knew one was coming that wasn't MS it would be Sony. They also have some info on NX more than likely and if there is a decent power gap with that as well I could certainly see why Sony would do this. If they didn't its possible they go from strongest hardware in the console space to the weakest.

So you're just assuming Nintendo will do it right and Sony will fumble and burn a bunch of consumers. Got it.

No you got nothing. You are making an assumption about an assumption I didn't even make lmfao.

I never said anything about Nintendo doing this right, honey. You just getting on console wars on me. Whatever lol.

Essentially every game played on the original PS4 will be a downgraded port of the "real" PS4K version.
But what if in this hypothetical, that downgraded port was running the same it as if it were developed with just the original PS4 in min. Yes, it is "downgraded" but to the level it was going to run regardless. I mean, this is already the case when looking at PC->PS4/Xbox One versions of games.

This really fucking sucks. I guess Sony figured "They spend $1000 upgrading their phones every year. Why not their consoles?"

The return of Arrogant Sony.

lol no this isn't the return of arrogant Sony nor did Sony just take this idea from the phone industry.

Especially since rumors are circulating that Microsoft is doing the same thing.
What you are witnessing is the evolution of game platforms.

Microsoft and Sony have been working to make the PSN and XBL as continuous platforms moving forward.

Sony and MS need to stay on top of moving trends and releasing hardware every 5-7 years is hard.

Sony is releasing an updated console for 2017 most likely. That's 4 years. That's how long the Wii U is going to be relevant for.

Rather, this is a move to give the PS4 a longer life cycle and keep it more up to date with technology.

I don't know but a 10 year and 2.5 year cycle seem a bit different to me, maybe I'm just imagining things...

no way they would release it this year. however i do see that we may start seeing a 4-5 year life cycle with consoles now. Especially since they are using the x86 architecture vs a customized chip. This kind of makes sense.

and i mean... people are rebuying phones every 2 years at about the same price clip(very crazy imo too.) but 4-5 yr life cycle does seem like to be the new norm.

the closest example to this is the 3ds(2011) -->new 3ds(2014)

How is Sony alienating you if all PS4/4K software is intercompatible? You get to still play the games but it won't run as nice as the better console. No matter what happens- OG PS4 Battlefront will always be 900p, From's games will always have frame pacing issues, and the console will never run Drive Club at 60 FPS.

If you can pay for a btter console that eliminates those barriers why would you be upset?

There's nothing that Sony is going to be able to tell people that isn't going to make them feel like they're getting screwed over with this. It's that simple. The reactions you're seeing aren't going to go away. The anger around this is basically like what we were seeing with DRM. If Sony were/are actually listening to gamers, then they better start taking the backlash they're seeing right now seriously.

It would have to as 4K TV is just getting started. Most homes don't have it. It will have to work, as PS3 and 360 still worked on 480i TVS before them.

Thanks so if you dont have a 4k tv you just get the performance boost right?

I guess ill wait and see how many games do get better enhancements

If Sony and FROM patch Bloodborne to run at 60 fps, I'll buy this thing on day one.

Otherwise, I'll wait until next year before picking one up. I just bought my PS4 six months ago!

just thought of the possiblity of this enabling 60fps in Destiny... god damn yes please

oh and bloodborne! thank you person above me!

2x GPU is not going to bring us to a 4K console for games and really won't be worth the upgrade.

I can see them selling these for the next 3 years and doing it again soon after.

Will we see a Hyrule Warriors 3DS/New 3DS scenario with 2017 (and onwards) PS4 games?

Most likely. I think this is part of the reason why some people are getting pissed at Sony. Not necessarily at them for doing this, but gamers that stick with a regular PS4 are probably going to suffer from some badly optimized games and lesser content. Could get messy
