PS4K information (~2x GPU power w/ clock+, new CPU, price, tent. Q1 2017)

I don't even know what to think of this to be honest. All I know is that I want clarity on this thing. Something is definitely happening, but Sony come the fuck on and explain what the hell it is.

What is funnier is people thinking that PC gamers buy $400 video cards every couple years.

If you want a high end experience you have to pay. I am a pc gamer and I upgrade my video card every few years. Battlefield 4 was not running at 60fps max with my old card so I had to upgrade. The card was $750. That's almost two consoles.

Sure hope it isn't $499. I might be in at $399, but another hundred is a little steep when I've already got an old, scuffed up, noisy, but working PS4.

I really hope its 499, they need to make sure that they seriously buff the CPU and the bandwidth and not just double the GPU. Maybe they will need GDDR5X as well.

If they gimp it, then if it cannot do 60 FPS because of a weak CPU then there is NO POINT.

I know I always stop buying software when new hardware is coming..this LITERALLY could have been the generation where I only played rocket league.

I have bought games, not many though compared to gens past...dirt rally is ordered...probably won't buy more than 2 more

some people seem to be angry that this generation has been too short, but didn't the PS4 come out like 3 years ago? seems like a pretty good amount of time to upgrade things.

So you are ok for PC to have upgrade part every single month. But not ok for console to have upgrade model for every half gen (3 years) ?

Who is upgrading their PC every month? lol. You must buy some trash parts if you are, or you don't know how to build a good gaming PC. At your rate for upgrade rate, you can't even build a good type writer.

Can't wait for every game to be ported to vanilla PS4 like Shadow of Mordor PS360.

OMG that thought just really brought me down. Great example of what a lot of us are afraid of here.

Guys, its not about having an upgrade option. Its the fact that its fantasy to think that the ps4.0 versions aren't going to suffer when devs focus on the better box.

Totally can see the ps4.0 versions of games being chuggy messes.

I don't understand why Sony is doing that. Seems like it goes totally against what most consumers want from a console contrary to a PC.

If we get LastGen Shadow of Mordor- or 3DS Hyrule Warriors situations on the regular PS4 this has the potential to get really messy.

I am not too disappointed by this. If it is coming out this year I will have to skip though. PSVR is going to take up all my gaming hardware cost this year and prolly NX by the middle of next year. Looks like I would be waiting until Christmas of 2017.

Man this generation is gonna be a pain if you are a developer.

X1 which is the weakest. Then you have a PS4, slightly more powerful. Then a PS4k which is way more powerful. Then the NX which could be any fucking thing. And MS might do a Xbox 1.5 which could be anything as well.

Soooo much extra work for basically fuck all. And then you will have people bitching cause the console they just bought is showing shitty graphics compared to whats they can get soon.

Yep. Not to mention development costs are already spiraling out of control as well, and we've got a receipt for disaster IMO. It will definitely be interesting to see how things play out that is for sure.

hmm, well.. i'm in if this guarantees a much better VR experience. i can't and won't miss out on that. never buying a 4K tv though.. absolutely zero interest.

btw does this mean The Last Guardian basically skipped two gens? lol.

So are all the people who were console only because of the supposed need for PC users to upgrade their GPUs/CPUs/etc every couple years for hundreds of dollars going to finally switch?

not me, because i dislike playing on my PC no matter what. i'd rather buy a new console every year.

To people saying this makes no sense I don't get it. Well it very well might if / when both MS get on stage and announce new hardware as well as Nintendo at E3.

Joking aside, pretty much sums up the gen for me. With the insiders, the resolution atuff, the DLC, the patches, the underwhelming and overhyped games and now console upgrades. It seems creating more better games has taken a backseat for many. Probably the most disappointing gen for me as a gamer since 1989.

If you want a high end experience you have to pay. I am a pc gamer and I upgrade my video card every few years. Battlefield 4 was not running at 60fps max with my old card so I had to upgrade. The card was $750. That's almost two consoles.

Sounds like you make bad buying decisions.

Getting some Sega vibes here. Splitting the user base is dangerous stuff.

That said, I wasn't planning on buying a PS4, but if the current PS4 model gets a nice price cut when the 4k model arrives, I might buy one.

It's not spiting since all games will work across the sku's.

Are you kidding?

Right now I am considering cancelling my PSVR preorder if this proves to be true. If so, I will be greatly interested in seeing what Nintendo has to offer.

Let me elaborate. I'm not picking sides here. This can also screw Sony big time, because they are throwing new products @900$ overall into the market which may turn some people off. "VR sounds like a cool thing...but I'll need the new PS4K to get the best out of it"

But as it stands now, it's just a handful of Gaffers who say "let's see what Nintendo has to offer" and we have to work with experience from last/current gen when WiiU got slaughtered.

Who is upgrading their PC every month? lol. You must buy some trash parts if you are, or you don't know how to build a good gaming PC. At your rate for upgrade rate, you can't even build a good type writer.

This is GAF, which is extremely console based, stupid and false stereotypes about how PC Gaming works are the norm.

This thing isn't even a PS4 anymore. I mean I just got this thing for Christmas and it's already being rendered obsolete. Screw this!

While some people may disagree, I also feel Sony is a highly reactionary company that tries to get into a business they think will be a success as soon as their competitor gets going.

If you look at things like PlayStation Move or PSVR, they're very closely modeled after announced/existing products.

And yes, I feel their hardware/price point combination was 80%+ of what won them this generation, so keeping that is probably a pretty huge objective at the company.

I dont think PSVR is really reactionary though. Palmer said that Sony were doing some work with VR before the Rift KS

My personal guess (and this is a guess) would be that they heard from developers that Microsoft was doing this, decided they had to do this to not be behind on hardware quality for three years, and then decided on the specific 4K angle because it fit really well with their 4K television push this Fall even if it makes zero sense from a game perspective.

Absolutely this. They have 4K TV's to sell.. what better chance than to ride on the success of the PS4, especially if the competition is also planning on doing the same.

It also allows them to lower the price on the PS4Peasant edition for emerging markets without devaluing the brand.

Bingo. This is all about the TVs. Sony could stand to make a fortune in 4K adoption.

More TVs, mean more UHDs, mean more PS4Ks.

They are using the Playstation brand as they did to sell DVDs and Blu-rays in previous generations.

I'm amazed this is really happening. This will probably change console gaming as we know it forever. It's an interesting development and i'm happy to see this happen although i'm not sure if it will benefit console gamimg in the long term. I'll most probably buy day one if there is a considerable power difference.

However, I firmly believe that this Sony reacting to a possibly more powerful Xbox one coming in the short term future. There is no way Microsoft was going to sit out this generation without trying to do something about it.

Also, how come this is leaking so early and in such a big way?

The Wall Street Journal implied they might be keeping the regular PS4 as a cheaper model in their primary markets as well.

theres tons of kids and others who will buy the pspoor too... like if I had a 10 year old kid I would for sure buy them that one.... who cares? people freak out about the funniest shit. if they drop ps4 to 299 or less it still represents great value for years ....

its same on pc, I tried to build one for 500 and it just wasn't worth it, 200-300 more was the way to go.... but you could do it for 500 and play some good games... just not on good graphics. this is the same deal. except for a console and console games are awesome too. having a base model and a plus model is the norm in all consumer electronics, I'm amazed it hasn't happened before.

I bought a GTX 970 instead of a 980ti.

I had to make sacrifices when running my games.

I'm outraged with Nvidia, outraged I tell you. How dare they sell something better than the GPU I chose?
Pretty much this.

I'm in day one. I hope it's soon! Hardware in ps4 and xb1 was bad from day one and we're already 3 years in. It seems like a lot of the replies in here are one of the reasons why pc gamers look at console gamers as peasants.

Pretty peeved. Think I might just wait on the NX and use that and my gaming PC.

Risky move by Sony too, tbf. PS4 is selling superbly.

Except it's not. OG PS4 will be priced down quicker and positioned as the mass market, low entry point option, while the $400-$500 box will cater to enthusiasts in the console space. This will ruffle very few panties in the grand scheme of things.

Yeah....this is risky for the user base, especially without some kind of upgrade/turn-in program.

IMO, console hardware isn't the same as a phone, expecting to have to upgrade a console every couple of years isn't going to provide for the same experience phones have. The vast majority of people aren't upgrading their computers every 2-3 years (though the market is probably skewed in that regard in that is more catered to to enthusiast users in the first place)

Personally don't think its going to end well, but it depends on how Sony manages to play the shift.
