Yes, the title is an oversimplification of what's going on, though, as a few others have pointed out, the back end of the article makes a few points that merit consideration (serialized vs episodic shows, looking at shows that have been successful, discussion of foreign revenue).

Even in Canada, Empire fell flat and was taken off air from City and S2 airs exclusively on Shomi (Netflix-ish platform).

Usually Canadian viewing habits mimic US ones judging from Numeris (Nielsen equivalent in Canada) so it's kinda odd.

Can't say I'm surprised by Moonbeam City being nuked from orbit, but it did legitimately get better as it went on. Quest for Aquatica was at least consistently funny. More episodes like that would have been good for it, I think.

Also, I wish FOX would just freaking cancel Minority Report, already. Get it over with.

So then don't make that the article.

"Empire" doesn't seem at all like a show that would play well for overseas audiences.

I shudder to think what a dub would look like.

Like I don't think they can dub the songs, 'cause that would be even more awful. So you have these characters speaking on another language with another voice suddenly burst out singing in English. It's not like hip hop is easy to understand if English isn't your first language, so what do they do then? Use subtitles for the songs, just leave them untranslated? If they use subtitles they might as well use it for the whole show (I can't stand dubs anyway and would never watch one, but some people don't have a choice).

Anyhow, that doesn't sound very appealing.

A show entirely focussed on the American music industry flops overseas? I am shocked. Better blame people from other countries as being against diversity.

How about, stay with me here, they don't make an article with a shitty premise and such a headline? They could have taken a fair approach instead.

Think of what a competent network could do with that money.

They might as well have just lit the Vinyl money on fire. At least it could keep people warm for a little bit so it would have had some value.

they could have used it to give fincher the budget he wanted for utopia

LOL

Jesus. Considering what CW pulls off in their superhero shows on regular bassis with barely any money, imagine a Berlanti made superhero HBO show with 100mln dollars budget.

$100 million? Goddamn. That Scorsese money. Was Boardwalk that successful for them?

And I wonder what the budget is for season 3 of The Leftovers. Hopefully it's enough. Never thought the best series on HBO would be from Lindelof, yet here.we.are.

I'm guessing Berlanti makes full seasons for Supergirl, Arrow, Flash and Legends of Tomorrow together on less then that budget.

Game of Thrones season 6 cost $100 million
Vinyl season 1 cost $100 million
~$30 million of that was just for the pilot.
Like is it actual drugs that they use and not props? Because unless it's actual drugs they're getting ripped off.

Because Game of Thrones at least looks like a $100 million show.

Yeah what the hell. The number I saw going around for that show was $100 million as well. Which I thought was a perfectly resonable excuse to not make the show. But Vinyl. They spent $100 million on fucking Vinyl!?

Wow, I'm surprised they're the same. It's probably because Vinyl has 13 episodes and GoT has 10 though, ri-*looks it up*

VINYL ONLY HAD 7 EPISODES?!

WHAT THE FUCK

The best thing is that game of thrones still needs quiet episodes because 10 million for an episode isn't enough.

Kevin Hart & Lionsgate To Launch VOD Service That Includes Original Series
Lionsgate and Kevin Hart, through his Hartbeat Digital banner, have partnered to launch Laugh Out Loud, a new video-on-demand service that will feature content created by Hart outside of features and touring. That will include original unscripted and unscripted series in which Hart will appear, starting with a hidden camera series starring Hart as an undercover Lyft driver. There also will be original content generated by and featuring up-and-coming comedians and top social media personalities, including a series toplined by Vine and Facebook star Logan Paul.

Laugh Out Loud, which eyes a fall 2016 launch, also will feature Lionsgate library content, including movies, which will partially be curated by Hart. The agreement is focused squarely on VOD at the moment but some original series could potentially cross over to TV in the future.
...
Laugh Out Loud joins Lionsgate’s two other OTT services, Tribeca ShortList, which debuted last fall, and Comic-Con HQ, to be unveiled this summer in partnership with Comic-Con International.
...
The LOL deal was negotiated by attorney Stephen Barnes on behalf of Hart.
...lol

Glad Survivor did well again, although this isn't its best season.

At first, I was sad to see The Middle's numbers, then I remembered I didn't watch it because it was a repeat, and saw the big R.

Togetherness is cancelled? I watched the first season yesterday and it seemed like it only took 3 hours lol. I really enjoyed it and am excited to start the second season.

~$30 million of that was just for the pilot.

Yeah, but that's still like a $7.7 million per episode average which is fucking insane!

I mean, if Mad Men and The Americans (both fantastic looking shows set in the decades immediately before and after Vinyl), not to mention pretty much every other period piece ever, can be produced for a fraction of that money...

I'm guessing a large part of it went to Scorsese for directing the almost feature length pilot and they probably also had to pay quite a bit to the estates of Elvis, Bowie, etc. to use their music (not even the original songs though - they're all cheap sounding covers) and likenesses. I have no idea where the rest of that money went though.

WHAT THE FUCK

Vinyl's first season is 10 episodes, although only 7 have aired thus far.

Has Vinyl's ratings shown any improvement at all? Or is it still kind of a dumpster fire?

Nope. Still hovering around the 550-670K range.

Finished catching up with Gotham with the last two episodes. Simply stunning and fantastic. Finally got me a Riddler episode!

Gonna catch up with two episodes of Agents of Shield, and then I might finish up Episode 1 of The Blacklist. Might start up Breaking Bad too but I'm not too sure about that one.

So... another comedy VOD thing. Whatever happened to SeeSo or whatever the Dan Harmon thing was called.
Still a thing apparently!
Actually their latest original, Bajillion Dollar Propertie$, has been getting some positive buzz. No idea how/if that translates into actual subscribers though.

It was more to suggest that $30 million for the pilot was extra bonkers. Nothing in it really warrants that cost. Like I know that the building collapse can't have been cheap, but instead of splurging they could have done it differently. The CGI was just excessive and there must have been a smarter way to do it. Or was Vinyl rushed? That would explain why they would just throw money at it to fix the problems.

Like it's baffling, they should just hire whomever it was that used to do the production of BBC Four's drama output. Those 7.7 million for a single episode would have covered the entire series then, maybe even the second season. I just can't get over how much money they spend.

Well if that's the case then it's money well spent. I mean seeing Clearly Not Robert Plant really was a highlight in the pilot...
