I already have a gaming rig, the PS4K isn't going to be 400$ here, it is going to be much, much more. With the money that I spend getting a new one I can easily get more PC parts (more RAM, more HDDs, new SSDs, more coolers).

Last year I went the easy route and got a PS4 instead of a PC because I thought "hey, at least I'll be able to ride this until next gen". Guess I was wrong and should've upgraded my PC even further.

What GAF never realizes is that even though the majority of members are from the USA/CAN/Europe, there are many people from other countries that have to deal with prices that are not near the MSRP.

They did a "top of the line device" for those that wanted. It's called PS Vita, take a look at the sales and see how wrong you are.

That's simply not true. Ps4 and ps4k share the same architecture and the ps4 is still an active platform with huge userbase. For a game to be gimped on the ps4, the developers would have to get out of their way or be terribly stupid.

The point of the ps4k is to offer more options for the consumer and quench the thirst of actual and potential ps4 or Xbox One users who are disappointed by the low spec of the ps4 and wouldn't mind paying more for better games.

When devs use whole new effects and technologies on the pc version of their game, they don't use those on the console version, because it would make the game unplayable. Why suddenly they will want to keep those effects? They will do just like they do now and cut corners on the ps4 version in order to have a stable framerate.

The ps4 isn't being downgraded and because the ps4k is exactly the same components but with better spec, optimizing for one is beneficial to the other.

There is absolutely no evidence, that a game optimized for the ps4k would have run better on the ps4 if the former didn't exist.


The only real concern about the ps4k is the splitting of multi-player userbase where some will have an advantage over others. But hey, if you are really that competitive and care a lot, you wouldn't mind paying more to be the best.

I'm thinking more about flexibility and choice then ease in my case. I don't enjoy upgrading PCs but I can do it, and for less and in more incremental steps then buying an entire new system every time.
 
GAF! Account was finally approved! I'd be down with a new PS4 iteration but I'm not sure, budget wise, if a PSVR, 4K TV, and PS4K are realistic in the near future. Of course without a solid announcement from Sony, there might be time to save after becoming a VR early adopter. The real question is, how will No Man's Sky benefit from the performance increase?

Well, considering the most recent example of this as Hyrule Warriors which left the millions of 3DS owners screwed compared to the incredibly small amount of N3DS owners. Their fears might be warranted...
 
Unless there's a killer trade in deal, I think I'm out.

I was already not particularly happy that the PS4 (which I picked up in 2014) runs many games worse than my computer from 2012 (that wasn't cutting edge when I bought it). I think I'll just upgrade my PC and call it a day.

Edit: I'll add that I typically upgrade my PC every 4-5 years, so the talk of needing to upgrade every year is bullshit.
 
simple question, can i play ps4k games on my regular ps4? If GOW4 releases on it can i play it on my ps4 as well?
 
Not sure how I feel about this if there's no upgrade option. It just feels shitty to not offer a trade in option for current owners this isn't PS5.

I used to buy every console available (no exaggeration, literally every console) until I realized the value you get out of a gaming PC.

I want to ask everyone supporting this idea a question. If this is real, and the PS4.5 is a substantial upgrade over the original, what's the point of consoles? Please don't say "you DON'T have to upgrade", because if what the OP is saying is true, then yes, you do. Games will be targeted for the PS4K, and run poorly on the PS4, so it's pretty much an essential upgrade. In that case, why would anyone ever pick a console over a gaming PC? For me, Consoles represent value, as they have a life cycle of 5-10 years, and games are optimized for them for that period of time. If that is no longer the case, I can't think of a single advantage they have over a similarly priced PC.

Almost certinaly yes, at lesser settings/frame rate. But will it play games from the Ps4k.2? the PSK4.3?

Who knows wher esony intends to go with this, or even fi it will be successful at this point.

You missed the point of the analogy. Republicans want the old shitty healthcare system. The people who are complaining about this are shunning progress by threatening to move to a platform that is even more progressive(in regards to upgrades.)

Better hardware is not a bad thing. It's a very good thing. I would have died for a PS 3.5 mid gen last cycle. I even bought a gaming PC just to get some kind of upgrade. Now Sony is hooking me up and I can get my hardware refreshed more often. There is no negative here.

It wouldn't be true 4K gaming. It'd be something like we are already seeing with current resolutions. A 4K image will be the output but it will be made up of lower resolution sources. Things like temporal anti-aliasing will be used to add more information to the final image above what the direct source resolution would imply. The final image will be somewhere between the source resolution and 4K.

For most people that would be more than enough and they would need a Digital Foundry review to tell the difference.
 
For those asking where the PS4K theoretically stands I made this. By made I mean I took Tom's Hardware GPU Hierarchy Chart and added consoles to the Intel column. I feel it's a good representation of where the consoles stand compared to PC GPUs.

No, a comparable situation would've been a PS3.5 around March or mid 2010. The PS3 released November 2006.

Also, the PS2 to PS3 jump was a completely different situation. That was a gigantic hardware leap like we'll never see again. The market is different now, tech "leaps" are different now. These consoles are not as future proof as they used to be, especially with VR and 4K around the corner (even if we're not talking about native 4K games yet).

If it means better trailers and back of the box screenshots, then yes, developers will focus on the more powerful hardware. They won't even blink. We've seen it happen before.

Weren't XB1 and PS4 users complaining about cross-gen titles holding them back though? This is basically a continuation of that because devs will focus most of their time on the older install base and barely work on getting the most out of the new hardware.

The more I think about it the less it makes sense. Unless the new hardware is really being marketed towards people who just want that marginally better FPS and resolution. If it's for VR, then how is VR going to do well when the install base they've built for 3 years isn't going to be able to use it fully? What is the purpose here?
 
While their at it, they might as well offer 4K programming via playstation vue along with 4k Netflix, and an upgraded DS4 with 3x the battery life. Then they'll be really styling on you hos.
 
4k is probably more about HDR than resolution, but I'm just a TV layman

Anyway I'm game for new consoles, they could barely handle 1080p multiplayer let alone VR. Hopefully there is a good trade in plan

Phantom Pain, Tomb Raider, and Call of Duty were all running on Xbox 360's. Those games are 3 months old, and the PS4 is 10x more powerful than the 360.

So they go from making games for Xbox 360 for 10 years, and now all of a sudden, out of nowhere, for no apparent reason, before the system has even been maxed out, we need a new console?

then i am ok with this. keep my ps4 for now and if i see a need to upgrade later on for personal preference i will.
 
Because I can't get uncharted on pv, and I can't get naughtys next game on pc.

It's nice to give the developers increase in power for thier next games.

Same idea for granted Turisomo and other games.

Pc guys should be happy to, games will look even better in thier hardware. I'm sure focus will be on the more powerful ps4.
 
Is anyone saying "your PS4 will run the game the same way as before" at least reading the OP?
Its clear on the OP that some devs will target the 4K and the OG will suffer "sacrifices".

There's a few reasons for me:
1. I get bad wrist pain from playing with keyboards. As someone who likes shooters and will play online from time to time, it'll essentially mean I wouldn't be able to play my favorite games on a PC for more than an hour at a time.

2. I get really bad OCD with graphics setting options. I change them on a room to room basis, I can't just relax and play.

3. Many excellent games don't hit PC, get late PC releases, or shit PC ports.

4. I would be tempted to upgrade far more often on PC than with 3-4 year console upgrades.

5. I can't afford the upfront cost of a PC as my computer is a Macbook.

This is how I feel about it, more or less. I've only had my PS4 since December and I can fully acknowledge that most games run like shit. It isn't like a PS4k will compromise all of the slick optimization happening on the current system.

well, now when we are at that - does any station even offer 4K broadcast? I think it was done for WC live games only.

They are launching new 4K video streaming service these days though... I am sure it will run on this PS4 as well.
