Thing is. They haven't really announced anything yet.
I think the PS4k name is perfect if they market it more for 4k media.
sony's experimented with hardware before. not exactly in this way, but the ps tv made a microconsole out of the ps vita, and psp go made the psp into a digital-only platform. neither were particularly well received or supported by sony. this thing might be unless it's so expensive that supporting it does more harm than good, like the $500 xbox one.
Yup PS4K is just more catchy and makes sense.
I see a lot of people disliking this idea, and then saying "especially because I bought one on day 1". If you bought one on day 1 aren't you in the best position? You've had more time with the console that the guy who dropped $350 last week. I don't get this argument.
I bought one on day 1 and have gotten hundreds of hours of gaming entertainment. Im totally cool with a new update. I don't have to buy it immediately and like having the option to upgrade after 3-4 years now.
I usually recommend my friends and family on when to buy phones, computers, etc. It's always to OK to buy early in the buying cycle. Day 1 is good.

How would a newer version affect you? PS4 won't become obsolete.
Enthusiast yes. Average buyer? The mass market? They don't have a clue. Why would they? They don't go on gaming sites, they don't follow gaming news. Even if they Google something they are likely to read the first thing they see only. Researched shoppers aren't that common in most retail items.
People need to chill. This is just this gens version of the the slim. Except along with a better shape and hard drive, we also get 1080p and 60 frames.
Ps4 will get a price drop to 199$ and will continue to sell gangbusters. 399$ Ps4k will get bought up by enthusiasts and hardcore that need the bleeding edge for their psvr.
Everyone will be playing the same games. No one will be left out. The player base won't be split any more than when PS3 or ps2 slim came out.

There's no way they come out with an upgraded PS4 for $350.
They have to find a way. They cannot afford any confusion with PSVR coming out.
there's an easy solution to all of this: spend $799.99 and get a ps4 and a ps4k in the same package.
I think people are just worried, Sony has not got a good track record of supporting their hardwares and peripherals over the past few years.

I think the best way they could go about this is the following:
-PS4 is supported until PS5 launches in 2020 or something.
-PS4K is announced this E3 and releases sometime in November 2016 or Early 2017
-PS4K has no exclusive traditional games (outside of PS VR titles/VR Modes for specific games working only on PS4K)
-PS VR works for both OG PS4 and PS4K for the next three years with little issue outside of some exclusive VR games on PS4K
-Sony has special discount announced at E3; PS4K and PS VR bundle for 599$ (200$ less then both together) to make OG PS4 owners a bit better about the situation
-PS4 and PS4K Share core game library and the only difference is that PS4K has 'Enhanced' Mode that increases makes Frame Rates more stable and ups the resolution
-Some games push PS4K more but 90% of the PS4 library works 1-to-1 on OG PS4 for 2016 and 2017.
-2018-2019 games push PS4K more and the 'Enhanced' Mode is pushed for more games; 70% of PS4 library built in mind for OG PS4
-2020 has PS5 announced and stats that PS4 games are compatible with system
Yeah, they definitely seem to be in a tight spot if PS4K launches this year. Maybe the best case would be to cut the price of the PS4, and move PS4K to holiday 2017? PS4, PS4k and PSVR all in the same holiday doesn't sound good imo.

I think what I mentioned in the other thread was Sony figuring a way to let developers use the base specs of the PS4 while using the increased gruff of the new model. This has to be 100% seamless to the end user or otherwise, Sony is screwed.

I honestly think the timing of this makes it a ploy to slow down PSVR pre-sales because Sony can't build enough PSVR units to satiate the demand for it. They already said they underestimated the demand and that's why they pushed the launch out further. I'm not getting a 4K set anytime soon since upressing HD to "4k" looks like shit on all of them, but I do want the extra horsepower.

I give it 2019 at the latest, 2018 more likely. If last gen was an anomaly then why release a PS4K right at/around the release of a VR device instead of using the extra year or so for a PS5, that can sell to a greater net of enthusiasts who won't be so tapped out by not one but two not-exactly-cheap gaming hardware devices?
You say that, but gamers seem to be the ones doing as much to immolate that draw these days, since they seem less and less impressed with what devs can eke out of hardware later in a generation and more often just seem to wish they had moved the game to next-gen hardware so it had a better framerate.
This is what XB1 owners have had to deal with since the start and I've seen many get annoyed at the constant mocking from PS4 owners how their version is better and annoyance if effects, resolution, framerate is inferior in the XB1 version of a game. Some have eventually jumped ship and bought a PS4 to get to be "king of the hill" so to speak.
This exact scenario will now move over to PS4 owners too.
We've already seen PS4 owners get annoyed when PC master race type of people enters a thread and start mocking the console versions, in some cases the mods have decided to step in and remind people that the discussion is about console version of a game but for the most part you've just had to endure the mocking.
This exact scenario will now exist within the PS4 community.
It might of course be some kind of inferiority complex, you simply don't like that someone else have better stuff than you so you get annoyed when someone reminds you about it. But whatever, what I don't understand is how ANYONE in these FaceOff-focused-frame-and-pixel-counting days can NOT understand how this sudden change in the console space gets people riled up.
It's true that you don't have to upgrade. But it's also true that you'll likely want to upgrade.
As a PC owner I feel the same way when a new GPU card is unveiled. I'm thinking, maybe I should upgrade. That's just the way it is. Inferiority complex or not. And console gamers now have to deal with that PS4 isn't the best console anymore, the definitive versions will go to another platform, and it's not like you can pretend to be okay with it and use the arguments that you like the controller, ecosystem or exclusive IPs better either. It'll be all salty mode on. It's obvious to me that many former happy PS4 owners will be annoyed at this.
If they release a $499 PS4k+PSVR bundle with no controller, camera or move controllers for existing PS4 owners this would be a win for Sony. I would do that.
That's my point actually. At this stage. With what we know, my positive outlook is just as valid as all the negatives.

PS move had a ton of support and wonderbook and the camera was part of that.
Its getting even more support now,also this is a odd comparison.
You could look at the start of this gen and see the outcry from people saying these machines were weak, and they are.
Forward compatibility is my only problem with this idea.
We can have all the pros you listed without risking any problem a quick iteration will bring if Sony just wait another 18 month, release PS5 instead, without forcing forward compatibility.
We really don't need a new hardware at year 3 to achieve all that.

GAF? You know it since people seem to never be happy on here about anything. Will call a game awesome and great and then 1-2 years later say it was bad really.
If this is going to be the case, then I will sell my PS4 and never touch console again until the end of its life when I'm sure no higher SKU will be released, then I might buy one. Not everyone have the luxury to buy multiple console.
Some will argue that the OG PS4 will play just fine, but when I buy console, I expect a same performance until the end of its life just like all of its predecessor. That being said, I'm cool with this idea if they have trade-in program.
This is coming from someone who have every Sony consoles except Vita.

I can't credit or discredit what you hear with "many randoms" online. I can point you to a search here (e.g. Witcher 3) and show many people complaining about it from a tech point of view.

Well no, not really. Your point wasn't simply "people need to chill". It was "it's gonna be a slim". Which makes it not as valid.
There have been no real leaks/rumors from credible sources pointing towards this being just a slim model, whereas multiple sources seem to indicate this not being a ps4 slim like model and exactly what this topic is discussing, which is what people are freaking out over.
I agree with the "people need to chill" part though. I don't see this situation being all that different from our current state of affairs as ps4 gamers are already playing multiplat games with "significant sacrifices" compared to the pc counterparts.
This is the weirdest argument ever. Are we really asking that when we have DF articles for every game? Stop being weird. People asking this know exactly why the thought of a more powerful console so soon is a cause of concern.

It will be before PS4k is available.
They'll get used to it. Because they got used to it in any other area, including Smartphones, tablets, TVs, cars, dishwashers, you name it.
There won't be PS4K exclusives, 2x the power doesn't justitfy to jeopardize a 40mn install base. Maybe (!) some VR games just won't be playable on PS4, but don't worry about costly AAA productions. "Faster transitions" perfectly summarizes the problems with this new approach, incl. costs.
Remaster? Lol, no. A PS4K patch making single player mode run 60fps? Yeah, that'd be nice.
They've become cheap (German retailer Media Markt offered a 49" 4k for €444 recently) and one year from now they'll be everywhere. 4K will become the new standard, and PS4k will be the first device which acutally delivers some content for them.
But that doesn't stop PS4 sales momentum, PS4 still on track to hit 100m with weak ass hardware.
Before we know about PS4.5, not many people asking for it, not many say "I'm done with console if PS4 can't be more powerful"
