The screws that come with lighthouse mounts, are they intended to support in drywall alone or do they require being screwed into a stud? I'm trying to figure out with I want to do. My space isn't huge but should be adequate (3.5m by 2.5m).

Always use an anchor when using screws that are going into nothing but sheet rock. Especially when the thing you're mounting is going to be vibrating and might shake itself loose.

two per mount and you'll be fine.

Anybody in here who is considering or has already ordered an Vive to use in combination with an Laptop?

I am considering getting an Vive for my MSI GT72 2QE Dominator Pro , 16gb Ram, GTXM 980 8GB , I7 5700 2.7GHZ, No optimus (Physical switch to switch between onboard Graphics-card and dedicated Graphics-card)

I am getting and 5.8-capable result with the steam VR test. No frames below 90 and no dropped frames.

Don´t really know what to do now. I really want to own an VR headset. I can accept that I can run the games only on medium and low settings, just wondering if anybody here uses or will use the same setup .....

I'm probably going to just use a strong two sided tape, and put something soft in the corner as a backup in case the box falls.

Toggle bolts worked great when I put shelves up on my apartment's stupid plaster and wire mesh walls. Will probably do that again for vive even though it feels like overkill.

It's certainly not impossible. 3M makes mounting tape that'll hold them up fine. The problem is the tape will never come off without doing more damage to the drywall than drilling holes lol. Kind of like how you could technically use some construction adhesive or epoxy.

Actually, looks like these may be sufficient

3M's stuff is designed to come off without damaging the wall. I've never had any probs with it

I was thinking of using extension poles with flat mops on both sides, burn/seal the handle and moving bits.
I checked out the prices for autopoles, but those are like £60 each for 3m lengths. That is a bit overprices for it imo.

No drywalls in this house, just concrete and paint :p

Concerning the screw topic, are there reliable measurements out there for the mounting brackets (e.g. screw distances and size)?

I could at least pre-drill instead of just waiting unproductively ;)

I'm not talking about command strips. 3M is a big company that makes many products. They have many types of mounting tape, some of which are extremely heavy duty and quite permanent.

Concrete... Still possible to use holes, but obviously a bit more complicated. Heavy duty mounting tape might actually be just the ticket there. Worst that can happen is ripping some paint off on removal.

Another post I saw by someone at Valve (I think) said that if you have to use mounting tape, it's best to mount the base stations on a small flat platform and then use the tape to attach that platform to the wall. It gives it a better surface to adhere to.

I have command strips that have been holding up three very heavy glass and wood poster frames (I think each one is about 6 pounds last I weighed) for the last year. Command strips definitely aren't perfect, but I'd feel more than comfortable using them to secure the lighthouses in my room with appropriate padding underneath in case of an accident. I'd love to just anchor them permanently, but I move ever year b/c college life.

Is there going to be a Hover Junkers OT? Would love to play with some Gaffers. Prepare to get some legwork in guys because if you wanna survive in the game, you're gonna get a bit of a workout. lol

I've just built myself a new, more shallow desk, so I now have just over 6ft by just over 8ft space in my room.

Thank god! I'll be room-scale ready when it arrives

My under desk headphone hook is mounted with their VHB stuff. I got it from a friend who used it on a job building a heavy glass display case because it's clear and wouldn't show. I can push down on the headphone hook with a lot of force and it's obviously not going anywhere. It's maybe 6 square inches of adhesive and I wouldn't hesitate to hang 10 lbs from it if I needed to.

That sounds like a good idea. And even if there won't be an OT for the game we can organize something in the Vive OT.

After a large unexpected bonus from work, I am in and have my Vive pre-ordered (MAY), so whats next?

I have the following games that I have see run in VR:
P-Cars
Elite
Dying Light
Minecraft (Win 10 & Java)
Skyrim
No Limits 2 Roller Coasters
Warthunder
Alien Isolation

What are the chances these games will get VR updates for Vive? Unofficially?

Is there a Vive killer app yet? Other than Tilt Brush which I am totally hyped for.....

How are other coping for the wait...........

If it shows up at my local best buy I will definitely cancel my preorder after walking in and purchasing one.
oof, me too.

Budget Cuts and Hover Junkers are almost universally recognized as early "killer apps".

Personally, I'm also exceedingly hyped for Cloudlands VR minigolf, Audioshield, The Gallery and Fantastic Contraption. I'm curious about Vanishing Realms and Portal Stories: VR. And I already have Water Bears VR since it was free for a day or two for some promotion :)

And of course, everyone should try The Lab, which will be free and is by all accounts an excellent introduction to various facets of VR.

Pre drilling adds all of 15 seconds to each screw, I wouldn't start putting holes in the wall until you see how the lighthouse sits on the mount.

Meanwhile I'm trying to figure out some kind of ceiling mounted cable spool solution.

I'm talking concrete here, the drilling process is slightly more involved ;)

Also, I need something productive to do after finishing my DS3 article and before I get the Vive!

I gave up on that for now, will let others do the "research" and implement whatever turns out to work best,

My credit card charge has been pending since Thursday. Really hope it posts tomorrow and they send it out. I'm in Chicago only a day shipping away from the main hub in Indiana.

Anyone else in the same boat?

How important is the CPU in rendering VR? I have an i5-4690K and I'd prefer to not update it for a while since I bought it just over a year ago. I have 8GB of RAM and a GTX 970 that I will likely upgrade when the next generation of GPUs release.

Especially if you are indoors and in a room with electronics. I had my wife hold the vacuum right underneath the drill bit on the holes that I drilled to anchor the murphy bed so that dust didn't get anywhere. It worked perfectly.

I'm literally right next to you on the boat. Pending charge since Thursday and also in Chicago. lol

I'm sure no one knows this yet but what exactly does May mean. Are we talking early or end? I'm probably going to put my order in tomorrow. At least I can build up anticipation for the next month.

Can anyone briefly explain the software compatibility? I just spent about 20 minutes looking through Steam, r/Vive and r/Oculus to see what exists but I'm starting to get fairly concerned by the seemingly split ecosystem. Are there actually going to be titles exclusive to one headset?

I was really looking forward to Adrift, but it appears to be Oculus exclusive. I'm starting to find myself super torn on which preorder to keep.

Adrift is coming to steam very soon, confirmed a couple of days ago.

The games you won't find on Steam are the Oculus funded ones, only available through their store like EVE Valkyrie, Lucky's Tale and other upcoming titles.

Most if not all of the third party games are/are coming to steam (pCars, Ethan Carter, Adrift, etc.).

Minecraft - unofficial minecrift vive mod already out
Skyrim - uses vorpx which is getting vive support
War thunder - official support coming

Says I'm in part 1 shipment but my card isn't charged yet so I'm worried that I won't have it Tuesday

AFAIK, e.g. for the UK:
- HTC are trying to ship the product 'for delivery on the 5th'.
- the vives are in the Czech Republic.
- the boxes are being transported by DHL.
- DHL claims UK->Czech is 'next day delivery' (I assume the same in reverse?).
- you won't be charged until they ship.

So, I wouldn't worry at the moment, logically they should ship (to a lot of places) later today or tomorrow - and at that point they should finalize the payment and send the shipping details.
