Dark Souls III Review Thread

But now Im reading conflicting reports about bonfire locations

Also, are levels huge and full of secrets? Little nooks and crannies, hidden areas, that kind of thing

With the bonfires, what I found was that you would often have a kind of short transitional area between big areas and there was usually a bonfire at the start and end of these. Big areas didn't really have loads of bonfires.

I would say yes to both the second questions

Wait pyromancy builds are crap!? I don't want another STR/DEX build :(

Build balance is absolutely the biggest sticking point for the game, IMO. Not only did they make a bunch of bad changes to the spell mechanics from Dark Souls 3, but they are wildly undertuned in power, and it generally doesn't gel well with how aggressive many enemies can be.

The good news is that Pyromancy is the best of three schools of magic.

Interesting. So magic isn't as dominant as before?

Here is the thing, I think Polygon are trash most of the times. But for crying out loud their review (for a change) is actually reasonable. The score might be harsh but the reviewer does justify it with things they disliked about the game, especially the world design. And having seen the game played through multiple times I can totally see why someone would feel that way. Especially if they like the open ended nature of Dark Souls 1 and 2, the game does feel very constrained and limiting.

So instead of getting your fanboy panties in a bunch at least read the review and write why you disagree with it. Dont be like the UC3 thread.

haha, did you read what I wrote? I didn't say if I thought DS3 was good so you can put your canned "fanboy" statement and save it for another post.

And sorry I need to edit this again, but I read Polygons justification for their score being based on technical issues and I pointed out that hasn't been an issue in the past as long as one version of the game is good (10 to Batman anyone?).

Haha, god no. I really like the decision to add a estus flask for your magic bar because essentially it means magic builds get less healing which is a nice balance fix considering how OP magic has been for PvE in previous games.

However as it stands sorcery and miracles very weak damage wise and a lot of people are upset about that. Pyromancy isn't too bad from what I understand

I really wish it is more balanced now, not only in terms of damage (it really breaks the game because of the loads of damage it can make), but also in terms of casting, I still feel "uses" severely limits the possibilities of magic/pyromancy/miracles, even with the recovery herbs in DkS2.

I don't know how it is fixed (don't know anything about the extra bar en DkS3), but I've been wishing that since DkS1.

Yeah you didnt read the review at all did you? There is one small blurb over a picture about performance issues with the caveat that it didnt diminish their game's enjoyment and literally half the review talks about the world and level design being a major flaw.

And I dont even know what Batman has to do with this review. Different game. Different reviewer(?). Different platform. Different opinion.

Next time read something before whining about a number. Nice try at a backpedal though. :)

Magic / Miracle catalyst scaling is just literally broken right now so I would expect a "fix" or buff.

Are hybrid builds viable, or do you need to invest most of your points into faith and intelligence to have any kind of effectiveness?

Dexterity reduces casting time so I guess you'd want that anyway as well as INT/Faith

Instead of just getting spell usages for having Attunment slots, you also need to sacrifice healing Estus. And initial damage is weak. And scaling is kind of boned. And the enemies will be up in your grill before the casting gets off, and even in the early game spells are less likely to kill enemies in one hit like they did in Dark Souls 1, and bosses generally take more casts to kill in the early game with the default spells.

There's so much wrong with it right now.

How big of an effect is it? Why isn't it shown like it was in Dark Souls 2?

Bonfire locations are mostly fine. There are a few completely pointless ones though i.e. like there's a few where you light one in a boss location after defeating it and there will be another one like 20 yards away in the location immediately following.

I wouldn't be surprised if The Witness appears in several lists. It'll be in mine probably unless there are 5 better games in the year. I expect DS3 and U4 to be in it. We'll see.
The biggest thing working against The Witness is its release so early in the year. Hopefully outlets remember it. It's certainly a GOTY contender for me.

If it didn't matter why include it in the review?

I bring up the Batman review because a site needs to be consistent in order to be taken seriously, Polygon isn't so it can't.

And again, I read their review and I will reiterate for you what I said the first time. Polygon doesn't care about how a game plays but by rather what it says. 7 isn't a low score and I never said it was (which really handicaps your argument).

Also did you imply that people who wear panties are implicitly whiney? Makes you rather bigoted and sexist.

I actually prefer a more linear game as opposed to "open world" ( big FFX fan for example.) I feel it gives a more tighter experience and let's the developer better realize it's vision in a game so DS3 being linear is a plus for me. Can't wait to pick it up

OMG...

I just heard (not watched at all) the Easy Allies review.. (almost non-spoiler) and my goodness.. the review details, the sounds of the beings I heard in the back and the fucking soundtracks!!!

I NID DIS

Yeah, I honestly prefer more linear experiences recently as well. I mean, exploring Undead Burg for the first time was really fascinating, but it soon resulted in me wandering around like an idiot after killing the bell gargoyles with no idea where to go next.

I love the combat and mood in the series, but I didn't enjoy the aspect of figuring out stuff and discovery nearly as much.

I'm sure I'm in the minority in this, though, and that's absolutely fine, but a slightly more linear experience sounds really good to me.

^This. Any advice on PS4 vs. X1 versions? I heard that both suffer from frame rate dips, but PS4 has a better resolution. Not sure how accurate this is.....

Read our guy below :)

It is literally the worst of all 3, be aware.

as I heard from the easy allies review, it stutter a lot and on some bosses it has issues with attacks because of it.

hear (and not watch) the review in case you don't want to be spoiled, it doesn't have many specific details at all

I saw it coming, but maybe it wasn't a deal breaker. Agh...I want to try it so hard...
Thanks for the link.

How good does this game look versus Bloodborne? I have already preordered and am not looking at videos etc to prevent spoilers, but i was pleased that this DS is for only X1/PS4 consoles versus the prior generation which should let them up the detail of the environments in particular.

Game sounds incredible from the reviews regardless

Both men and women wear panties so it wasn't really sexist :)

Regardless of that nonsense.

Glad to see the game is doing well. I imagine I'll fall closer I'm line with Polygon on this one but it's awesome that From continues to get lime light.

Now just make another ACE game already From :)

Bloodborne was my first souls game and I loved it, tried to get through DS2 on PS4 but lost steam, was going to try and play through Dark Souls 1 on xbox one BC before jumping into 3 but....3 just looks too good I may just jump right into Dark Souls 3....

Austin Walker decribed the layout in each game in comparison to DS3.

Dark Souls is like a tower, where you're going upwards and downwards with floors to explore.

Dark Souls 2 is flat, where you are going far out in every which way, and it just goes.

Dark Souls 3 is a line. But maybe it's more like a tree branch?

This is a bad sign.
