Giant Bomb Vive stream | What a Time to Be a Vive!

Welcome back to the real world, Jeff.

Actually really like how Jeff plays the games. It just seems honest.
This is the entire philosophy behind Giant Bomb. It is literally the reason it was founded.

But they get up to a hell of a lot of crazy shit as well and the only other gaming coverage that has given me painful side stitches from laughing so much, is Consolevania.

At first I thought the drilling sounds were part of chaperone.

Mediocre day at work, so now I'm ready to Vive through the night.

Once you get the treadmill stuff for movement the space concerns will go away I assume, though the premium will go up again since you'll also need that device.

yes, noticeably so

The "why" of that is somewhat unclear though. While this certainly seems like a more complete product with the motion controls, I think there's likely an element of expectation setting that occurred since doing the Oculus stream and living with the Oculus for a short while. Hard to know exactly what is making it more fun.

The additional sensor that will come with the Oculus Touch controllers is just another camera. It doesn't do lighthouse-style tracking like the Vive (the Rift wouldn't work with that anyway).
I don't know why they wouldn't be able to. It'll be different, but if a game supports mods at all it shouldn't matter what source it's coming from.

I'm talking about the SteamVR interface, not games using the API.

Yeah, it definitely seems cool, but that commitment in terms of PC power and setting aside space in my room is a huge deal.

I can only have so many strap on devices in my room at any given time.

About the Oculus being able to do roomscale by the time the Touch comes out? I think it could manage, probably not 15x15 though.

No, he was claiming the Touch controller comes with lighthouse-style sensors. They just come with another IR camera. Room scale is "possible" with the Rift, but not in the way it is on Vive.

The games are much more interesting and being able to have full body movement seems like a major improvement.

Do we know what the difference will be? I remember Oculus saying something about a second camera enabling it. Was that a bit of FUD to counter the Vive?

The Touch will come with a second sensor. We don't know to what extent you'll be able to configure them; he was referencing the demo he experienced in 2015 where they were demoing ToyBox with Touch, where they had a room with a couple sensors on the walls.

Based on UploadVR's early test, one sensor can at least cover 10' x 10' space pretty well for the HMD. How they can be set up and whether Touch will track well in addition to the HMD in a corner-to-corner setup is TBD.

Actually, I think it is pretty obvious what is making it more fun. Room-scale 360° tracking with fully tracked controllers, and games built around these concepts.

I mean, people working with it have said for months that it is really hard to go back to interacting with VR with standard controls after the full experience. The reception seems to be a reflection of that.
