Amazing to see the turn in here. Thread went from "this is amazing, and they're clearly having a blast" to doom-and-gloom over Jeff's sobering, pragmatic comments.

It's very simple: the Vive carries the highest price tag, and there's a physical barrier to entry here that's not present with the other headsets. That makes the threshold for recommending it wholesale a whole lot higher. That's obvious, and it makes sense. Pretty much all the reviews that came out today said the same thing.

I don't see these comments as a knock against room-scale VR or the Vive itself. It's just reality, no different than the spec requirements for any modern game.

For example, if Cyberpunk 2033 comes out and requires a Titan X to run, you're going to see reviewers take that into consideration, and while the game itself may be amazing, if you don't have the money for the card, it's a non-starter for a majority of the audience.

With that all said, the Vive is the Swiss army knife of VR right now. It can do everything: seated, standing, and walking around VR with tracked controllers as a standard.

I think perhaps devs could help by not being quite so set on room scale. Many games that support standing room only (which isn't much space) should also be adaptable to a sitting experience as long as you have space to move your arms. I think that could remove a lot of the worry about beign able to make enough space - people still think they need acres of room from the demos that were being done by Valve.

Done with the stream. Its doing nothing but make me second guess my $887 pre-order (fwiw, I agree with GB, but still want to get this), heh

Have fun fellas, I'll read the rest of the thread later.

Really? For me it's just an entertaining way to weed out a few early games that I may have tried otherwise (and may still try, depending on their reason for not liking them). Hell, I can't wait for mine to arrive. May is so far away...

Wow, I started the stream at 10 and things were great in here. I leave for a few hours and it's doom and gloom. What happened?

Thank you. I just stopped in here to see how things were going since I can't tune in. Evidently the last few pages aren't really representative of the stream.

The stream has been pretty rough for the past couple hours though... I think the last descent thing they played was that Contraption game.

I'll say this Vive stuff looks more fun and interesting than the Oculus stuff they did last week, which just looked like gimmicky crap to me, or "normal" games like Lucky's Tale that happen to be on VR.

Yeah, there's no doubt the Vive has shown way better so far.

People in this thread might be misreading some peoples' opinions, I feel.

If money were no object, I'd buy this in a heartbeat. I was actually looking at system requirements earlier. But I have a GTX 560 Ti at the moment, and an i3. I'd need a new processor and GPU minimum. I'm also in Canada, where PC components are way more expensive. Also, the Vive is $1100 here. A new platform at $1800 or so is a really hard sell. That's one and a half times my rent.

It kind of makes me depressed, because I've always been someone who wants in on the ground floor, but I honestly don't see these headsets getting less expensive anytime soon.

They stopped playing things that have been generally praised and started playing some things that even sound sketchy on paper. There are still quite a few games that have had good impressions that they haven't played yet. All in all it's only adding fuel to my hype fire but YMMV.

If someone built a proper VR drum set, I'd like to see Alex play around with it and put it through its paces.

that would be rough. it's hard enough playing with audio interfaces with even a few milliseconds of delay, I can't imagine the input lag on these controllers approaching anything near functional for something like that

Another proper game, but with a $40 price tag.

So far it seems like:

"Early Access" - stay the fuck away
$20 or less - stay away
$40 - probably actually worth playing

I'm super hype. The detractors are literally judging hardware based on some early access crap they're showing.

I know the stream isn't over, but I really hope they start playing the other acclaimed games as well. Would be a shame for people to think this is all Vive has.

I'm not saying it is comparable, but people were upset that the Witness was 40 bucks. And I totally understand why these games are that expensive. The install base just isn't there yet to cover the costs if the games were too cheap. But honestly I just don't see how this could be worth the price.

Yeah this game looks decently fun, but it needs to be £5.
