THR: Warner Bros. Mulls Releasing Fewer Films as 'Batman v. Superman' Stalls

After an abysmal run of expensive underperformers including Jupiter Ascending, Pan and In the Heart of the Sea, the studio launched its effort at a Marvel-style film universe with the DC Comics movie that had been touted as proof the regime installed in 2013 and headed by chairman and CEO Kevin Tsujihara was getting on track. But a dizzying 69 percent plunge that followed its March-record $166.1 million domestic opening ($422.5 million worldwide) means Batman is not a clear win.

Some competitors say the film may turn a profit but hardly will be the money gusher studios hope for when they pour massive resources into making a giant tentpole with a big star — with a budget in this case said to be in excess of $300 million, and Ben Affleck. "The biggest problem," says the head of a rival studio, "is that it is not turning [DC] into Marvel. The audience has communicated, as have the critics." One agent notes BvS likely won't get to $1 billion despite launching the universe with "two of the most iconic characters in history." Pointing out that Jurassic World pulled in $1.67 billion globally, he continues, "you can't tell me Batman v. Superman is so much less valuable."

...

In an era of turmoil and transformation, even competitors aren't eager to see a legacy studio like Warner Bros. struggle. Warners long has been known for its commitment to filmmaker- and star-driven projects, but sources see signs of a change in culture, though the studio denies there is one. Several executives and agents say Warners seems to be greenlighting fewer homegrown movies as it focuses on silos that echo those that generate so many hits for Disney (Marvel, Lucasfilm, Pixar and Disney Animation). In Warners' case, the silos are DC Comics, Lego and a planned franchise spun off from the Harry Potter series. Tsujihara has touted that trio as the linchpin of his film strategy, and now, much like Disney, has eschewed all but a few original live-action films. Overall, sources say there is an understanding Warners is aiming to release fewer homegrown films than the industry-leading 21 it did in 2015.

One (or more) of the higher ups really really really doesn't know what fans want. They're learning all the wrong lessons from other studios. I mean, a peter pan prequel!? A moby dick retelling? Come on.

Batman v superman is good in theory, but people definitely didn't like the execution.

It's weird to see the reasoning "DC Comic movie underperforms" -> "needs to make changes" -> "need to focus on DC comic movies"

And this is how my favorite film studio dies

Forreal. Pretty disappointing.

They were like the last studio standing going balls out with big budgets and their directors. For better or worse in some cases

Good luck seeing a movie like mad max or even edge of tomorrow any time soon

BvS probably would have had very similar numbers to Star Wars had it actually been a good movie. It's fucking Batman and Superman.

Stop choosing shit directors to make these movies.

Zack Snyder killed Batman, Superman, Justice League, and Warner Bros.

Really though, I think the lesson WB needs to learn here is to cut ties with directors and stop expecting people to be able to recapture lightening in a bottle for you.

The fact that they make original films isn't their problem, it's that they continue to work with filmmakers like The Wachowski's and Snyder on continuously bigger projects despite continuous failures, just because they made a hit for them back in the day.

If they don't give Zack Snyder the boot before Justice League, then they really deserve every failure they get. You have more than enough evidence that the audience did not like his style, and if you're doing yet another very high profile film with him, you're dumb.

They need to plan things out more creatively, you can't just throw a bunch of paint at a wall and say "viola well painted". I'd like to see them hit the breaks on DC solo character movies for the time being.

Hopefully they don't toy with rebooting older properties for the big screen (I know Lethal Weapon is headed to tv, but they better not attempt to make another movie). Don't try and give us Dirty Harry with Zac Efron :p.

if only the DC movies underperformed. Look at that list in the OP, they've had a series of bombas.

Universal just came off a record year with cars and dinosaurs and disney has marvel, star wars, pixar, and their own animation studio.

WB and Sony be out there trying to make fetch happen right now.

People take a risk, and they get ripped to shreds for it.
All superhero movies to be Marvel formula based from now on. Yay.

I just hope this means they cancel Aquaman, and cancel Cyborg.

Zack Snyder is to blame. I dont know who he's sleeping with in order to keep getting work because he shouldn't be allowed anywhere near the director's chair.

There is absolutely no way to prove it, but I feel like things would've been different if everything was the same, but it was Christian Bale instead of Ben Affleck.

Jupiter Ascending
Pan
In the Heart of the Sea

How can non-industry people like us KNOW that these would be total bombs but the execs being paid ton$ of money greenlighting them had no idea? Someone tell me

I didn't need to see the trailers for any of them either. I couldve told them right off that dumping $150 million into Jupiter Ascending was a bad idea.

I suspect the Lego and HP films will be solid successes or big hits, those are the kind of movies if done in a way appealing to their target audiences as I suspect they'll be, will have really impressive and pretty lengthy BO runs. I expect FBAWTFT to do excellently at the BO until SW. It's November w/ SW in December, are there any nearly as big films in that period this year?

An association with a better series of films would have elevated this one, yes. But it wouldn't have changed things significantly.

Space Jam 2 will save the day!

WB probably needs to do a little more research on the audiences for these movies they've been releasing. There was like zero hype for stuff like Pan, Jupiter Ascending, etc.

These two characters didn't really need standalone movies. They just aren't compelling characters.

WB should focus on Black Adam/Shazam, Flash, Batman and WW. Superman probably doesn't need another standalone movie just yet, have him show up in Shazam and WW instead but use his rogues gallery for Justice League level threats.

Brainaic, Armoured Lex, Darkseid, etc.

But Matrix.

It could be the new Matrix.

Yeah, I mean, who knows. Ben Affleck has been cited as one of the highlights of the film, so for all I know I could be completely wrong. But there's no way to know for sure.

The risk wasn't taking a different tone from Marvel, nor should that be the lesson for WB.

The lesson here is that you don't give your flagship series to a director who makes bad movies.

Just like Fox got ripped to shreds for taking a risk with Kingsman and Deadpool, right?

When you film a movie, and then hype it for two fucking years, this kind of thing happens. When you finally sleep with your high school crush when you're thirty, and it's not that great, your first reaction isn't "maybe I should have less sex".

I liked Batman v Superman, but I can see what causes so many people to be turned off to it. Snyder's style is for a very niche audience and even I only like two of his movies so far (I liked watchmen as well). I'll say it, Snyder has to go.
