Critically acclaimed TV shows you don't like?

Any TV shows the critics seem to love, but you don't like? Here's my list:

the americans
broad city
community
arrested development
the good wife
mr robot
daredevil
hannibal
jessica jones
the leftovers
house of cards
silicon valley
orange is the new black
fargo
master of none
louie
portlandia
girls
bob's burgers

OP, it's okay to not like a "critically acclaimed" show once in a while.

But with that list, it appears the issue lies more with you than the show, really. Either you don't give shows a chance, or your expectations are astronomical. And I say this only because your list is so diverse that it can't be that you don't enjoy a particular genre or type of style.

What do you like OP - and is there any context behind the shows you don't like?

This may just descend into a list war so maybe some detail would be good.

Game of Thrones would be one for me. I managed four episodes and while I appreciated why it may have broad appeal, I just disliked the characters and saw it as a disinteresting fantasy romp with some boobs and violence. Thats fine in itself but didn't give me the kind of initial premise hook I need to continue with a show.

I got half-way through Daredevill S1 (Episode 4-5) and I just couldn't take anymore, it was so dull. A couple friends of mine have told me I've just got to when "it starts getting good" but I hate that sort of excuse for a show.

I don't understand the OP having a Simpsons avatar and not liking Bob's Burgers. The latter is basically a spiritual successor to the former, and I say this as a major, major fan of classic-era Simpsons.

I watched the first episode of Breaking Bad on Netflix and didn't get hooked, at all. Well I did like the short "I'm a chemistry teacher, let me show you how it's done !" moment for my inner geek, but the whole drug dealing and crumbling down psyche isn't my thing. Although I realise it's the whole point of the show.
I tried Hannibal too, and it's too sick and depressing for me.

I don't know about Game of Thrones yet, I caught a few random episodes on TV but since I knew nothing of the plot at the time, it's no surprise I was lost. But I read a few summaries of the different seasons already, and it didn't make me feel "I need to watch this !" (yes I know, there are dragons and boobs too)

Generally speaking the shows I appreciate are usually light-hearted though, so it's no suprise I didn't like the examples above.

No, no, you guys are missing it. I think what actually happened was OP misspoke, and he read everyone's minds and listed each individual on the first page's answer(s).

i don't understand

The Wire -- I find it boring. And not being american, it's hard to empathize with any of the characters and places or events they refers to. Gave it 2 seasons before giving up.

Penny Dreadful - This show feels like it suffers from trying to do too much without any budget or expertise to back it up. The show feels cheap, lots of the twists and turns felt undeserved, and it's 99% setup for something that gets resolved in 5 minutes or being resolved in the boring way possible aka cheap.

We should be friends.

I feel the same about Breaking Bad, and I lost count of how often I tried to get into Game of Thrones. Despite me liking fantasy styled shows, GoT does nothing for me.

The Big Bang Theory. I think that counts as "critically" acclaimed?

Total dumpster fire. I would rather watch paint dry.

edit - wait, OP doesn't like Bob's Burgers? Who doesn't like Bob's Burgers?

I would say Fargo season 1 was watchable, season 2 was such a bore.
But seriously OP we need to what you like, cause I can't understand how you don't like anything on that list.

I think you just suck. You should feel bad for having a simpsons's avatar, which was probably one of the most pop cultural referential sitcoms of the time.

Six Feet Under. I slogged through it, but the only thing I really liked was the
final montage at the final episode where everyone died.

Show seems hilariously overrated to me.

Carnivale also. Hated it, the main character was an unlikable asshole who lacked development. The supporting cast was great, but not enough to save that show, I can see why it probably got canceled.

And then there's all Anime ever. Steins Gate, SAO, AOT, all of them. Rotting garbage.

Vikings

The only redeeming quality it has is Ragnar. Guess the action is pretty good, too, but the setup for the action is always boring and uninteresting.

It's also home to the most annoying, cliched and edgy character ever.

I hate his stupid makeup, voice, hair, baby, wife, boats, daggers, posture, storylines, dialogue and anything related to him.

[edit]

Oh yeah, and his name is fucking Floki! What a fucking annoying and on the nose name.

Generally speaking the shows I appreciate are usually light-hearted though, so it's no suprise I didn't like the examples above.

Man, if you pretty much only like light hearted shows, you're missing out on pretty much all the best shows ever.

Mad Men is the strongest example for me. I can recognize it's well written and acted, but I'm a plot guy and it never felt like the show had much plot. It was more like peeking through a keyhole at couple years of lives of specific people in specific time period, which I find incredibly boring, almsot coma-inducting. I've lasted three seasons with it, but just couldn't continue on. It was a complete drag and aside from that womanizing gray haired boss I didn't like any characters.

Hahahaha
I also hate Anime

Game of Thrones
Any superhero show
The Office US
Breaking Bad didn't really grab me, gonna give it another go tho'.
Orange is the New Black after season 1

I don't like fun.

EDIT: And Homeland I guess, really liked season 1, season 2 not so much.

Seems a bit weird that you have this very specific list ready to go tbh, but you aired it out, dude. Hopefully we'll get all riled up and have arguments.

The Simpsons has very little toilet or gross-out humor. Bob's Burgers has tons of it.

Only reason I cannot watch this show is because of my loathing for the smug, punchable fuckwit known as Jim Halpert. I fucking hate that guy, he totally ruins what would otherwise be a pretty damn funny show (in its prime).

I mean, the Simpsons kinda has an entire episode based around toilets but whatever. Bob's has tons? Really?

you're right there. the office/breaking bad/game of thrones are just too good. i feel sorry for you.

I liked season 1 and 2 (definitely a guilty pleasure), but from season 3 it has really gone downhill. Everything was better when it was smaller in scope; currently the plot jumps all over the place with characters I can't really give a shit about. The pacing has always been a weakness of Vikings, yet they decide to do a 20 episode season. I understand that the ratings are really good and all, but damn...

100% with you on this. "People like crazy, edgy thief / rogue types, right?"

The sad fact is that yes, they do

I've been slogging through this for months, and I agree 100%. I'm only in the third season, but I think it's time to throw in the towel.

I've watched the first episode of The Wire twice and I found it difficult to get through both times and didn't have any desire to move on past it. I thought maybe the first time I was in a bad mood or something, but...

I'm generally a tv snob who loves the critically acclaimed shows, idk. It's my big glaring gap there. I don't say outright that I dislike it, because I've only seen the 1 ep. But yeah.

Honestly a lot of those shows suck. However I gotta say some of them have some positives so my list would more focus on the netflix original titles that are not good.
However I do like The Wire and other mass praised shows. So I am kinda in the middle. I cant stand one dimensional badly scripted super hero shows or netflix originals

I would love to add Vikings (had a promising start but oh boy afterwards), Homeland (guilty pleasure but sucked), The Americans (just mediocre but my obsession with communism made me continue), Orange is the New Black also got a lot worse after the first season or it overstayed its welcome. Hannibal is a however flawed masterpiece. Very bad pacing and nonsensical dialogue (but boy is it beautiful and Hannibal is my husbando).

I am a TV snob myself, but I recommend you to pull through with the Wire because it was pretty boring to me too the first episodes (same with OZ). However after that I got hooked. It is not without its flaws. Season 2 can be quite boring despite its highs. It is mostly an interesting characters making the stories and plot interesting. It is rare that a show is good from episode one unfortunately which makes watching shows quite boring and painful most of the time.

Exactly. Subjectively I appreciate peoples mileage may vary, but with an OP list that broad in scope and not to like ANY of them??

Does not compute.

Mr. Robot
It's weird, I went into this one expecting to dislike it but I gave it a shot because I like the things it pulls from. I ended up appreciating it a lot more than I thought but still disliking it for really different reasons than I anticipated.

I thought it looked like it was trying too hard to be edgy but it's actually self-aware. I thought I'd like it because I kind of like Fight Club and Blade Runner but the best parts of the show are when it does its own thing. And it doesn't do that enough.

The core story, I'm not sure. Could go either way in the following seasons.

The Killing
True Detective
Breaking Bad
Six Feet Under
Daredevil

Sometimes I just don't enjoy watching a show no matter how well crafted it is. Conversely I've loved a lot of shows with glaring issues.

There's prob quite a few but breaking bads prob the main one. Watched the 1st ep prob 3 times, and the 2nd once or twice and just didn't grab me. Literally all my mates were begging me to get onto it at 1 point as well.

I guess I'm the kinda guy who needs fantastical shit. Zombies, dragons, superheroes. Bring on just about anything that involves that type of stuff. I mean we watch TV to escape reality right so you may as well go the whole hog
