I don't think the TFA was a bad movie, but I was always more excited for something like this than more Skywalker-centered stuff. They have this massive universe to tell stories in and I'm glad they're doing something a bit different here. We're getting what seems like a spy/heist flick here and that excites me more than any mainline film probably will. The possibilities are endless.

While I love the Skywalker Saga, I am definitely more excited by the prospect of a bunch of "Tales of the ______" style movies.

Honestly trailer was meh. All the pieces were there - gritty world, boots-on-the-ground action, OT feel - but for some reason it didn't quite come together for me.

Just a teaser, though; they've got time to convince me.

So is that guy Biggs or what? He's Biggs right? At the end he'll shave off the grimy 5 o'clock shadow surrounding that pristine mustache and he'll turn to the camera and you'll be like BIGGS!!

Also even if it's a darker tone overall I really hope there's still some cheekiness. Lady's teaser dialogue was 2 edgy 4 me

This is set before Episode IV ... I think you're referring Episode VI?

Nah. The plans that Leia brings to the Rebellion in Ep. IV are the ones that are being "stolen" in this movie. There's a bit of retcon now that the plans were always intended to be stolen so that the Empire could find the hidden Rebel base.

I think. I'm not fully up on the new canon outside of the movies and TCW/Rebels cartoons.

It doesn't matter who we are, what matters is our plan.
I know it'll be targeting a similar age rating as VII for maximum profit, but this looks like a great opportunity for Star Wars to be less restricted in its content.

It's a bit odd that they don't make the time line more clear. For a lot of people this will be the first time they hear of this movie.

I am pretty sure that was from the EU which doesn't count.

Would the trailer look better with a grain filter over top? something seems offf...

It is just a teaser, I think when the first trailer comes they will say something.

I sort of expected it look a little more... covert? Could obviously also be that they just put all the action in the trailer but I feel a little cautious right now.

Probable plot spoiler:
We can infer from the opening crawl of ANH that the final act of this movie will feature a major battle.

It is a period of civil war. Rebel spaceships, striking from a hidden base, have won their first victory against the evil Galactic Empire. (the battle)

During the battle, Rebel spies managed to steal secret plans to the Empire's ultimate weapon, the DEATH STAR, an armored space station with enough power to destroy an entire planet. (Jyn and co. mission)

This does feel much more like what I was primed to expect from the prequels in the 90s. There was a time when I thought Star Wars was mainly about heroic struggle in the militaristic galactic conflict... thanks to the games and books.

Since then we've seen the vision that SW was always a kids matinee serial (the prequels and its view of Star Wars as 'Buck Rogers for a new generation') and we've seen the view that Star Wars is a fantasy retelling of the heroes' journey (TFA and its recreation of ANH.... farm boy/girls and their leap into whimsical adventure)

But damn.. it feels good to see Star Wars as a relatively mature military backdrop again. For the first time on screen, I'd say, outside of glimpses in the OT.

I guess with the travesty that was Batman v. Superman in recent memory.. it's hard not to have some PTSD watching this trailer. I don't think this will ride the edge of "grim dark mature, look how badass we are" as much as that piece of shit did though.

I can totally see a last stand fight where they have to hold a position so someone can escape with the plans, and Vader is just mowing through their traps and defenses like it's nothing, and methodically ending them one by one. Give it more of a horror movie vibe, like the Nemesis or The Terminator or Michael Myers, the unstoppable force that won't go down.

I don't expect Vader to show up to take them out personally but I can totally see most of them dying since that's canon.

She is not a Mary Sue because Mary Sue is not a thing. It's a term people who are afraid to admit they are sexist use. It's code, everyone else knows what they really mean when it is said.

No one ever complains nearly as much about the endless near perfect male characters in films we get endlessly every single year. Only when it's a girl do people get all flustered.
People love Captain America and also like Black Widow in TWS. Give her a solo movie that is fitting to her established character and you'll have people screaming "MARY SUE" at the top of their lungs.

So fucking obvious what they really mean.

Oh..boy. Could I introduce you to Kirito?

Ray doesn't get anywhere near as much Stu-hate as Kirito does.\

And Mary Sue is definitely a thing, Ray just isn't one. You could accuse her of lacking any charisma or personality, but her overpowered tendencies aren't anything extraordinary in action movie standards. It's not that she's more overpowered than standard, but that the villain was underpowered.

The Death Star should make it clear, but they have used it so many times its doesn't explain anything anymore.

Thank you for spoiler tagging the opening crawl to that 38 year old movie

"I rebel"

Way too edgy for me.

Looks okay, kinda generic. It's a Gareth Edwards film so it will probably be super forgettable.

Not sure if it was EU or not, but this can still be the case. Tarkin or Vader could be informed of the plot in progress and tell them to let it happen.

Oh wow the cinematography is beyond jaw dropping. I mean seriously looks like a award contender.

All shot in the new Arri Alexa 65 (6K) camera.

Grieg Fraser is getting better and better. His past work include Zero Dark Thirty and Foxcatcher so expect to see some beuatiful work here.

most people will be wondering where Rey is! They really have to explain it in the next trailer and not hope that "geeks" explain their friends and family what is going on.

Looking great. Hopefully it's a good movie.
Did anyone think Mark Hamill looked pretty unhappy to be a part of the force for change teaser at the end?
At first I thought that as well but that was a joke bit with Hamill doing the stare from the TFA ending. Should have made that ad a little longer, lol

Disney has been known to take characters from the Legends stories and alter them for both Rebels and TFA, so I really hope this guy is G.A. Thrawn.
I don't care if they choose not portray him as an alien, I just want his bad ass attitude and character. It has been rumored for a long time now that he will appear in Rebels and recently Filoni was dropping hints again at interviews. Hidalgo also said they are very aware of how close the rebels timeline is to Rogue One. Is anyone else here hoping for the same thing?

I don't think that's it. I think we see female character leads get heralded as a great ones even though they are a Mary Sue because we're so starved of good female protagonists that even badly written ones leap to being considered great characters.

And who are these perfect male characters you speak of? I'm struggling to think of any, certainly any that people consider good characters.

Anyway, I don't want to get off topic. Hopefully Rogue One's lead will be better written. I'm just surprised there's resistance to the Mary Sue thing.

Seems kinda dubious. Nobody calls Furiosa, Ripley or Sarah Connor mary sues. Why would Black widow be different from those characters?

Yeah I dunno what was going on here lol. Maybe he was just focusing on something off camera or reading his lines. Looks funny though.

Edit: Okay we know now that he was just having some fun guys. Thanks.

I think there will definitely be a messaging confusion over this movie being a mainline SW film.

The question is whether Disney/Lucas cares.... if people go to this thinking it's a continuation from TFA, is that a bad thing for them? Will these people not go see TFA anyway? It might just be good marketing to hitch an expanded cinematic universe to the cache of the main films...

Look great! But where are the xwing battles?! Even with a teaser, it's like calling a.movie "Jedi Knight" and not showing one Jedi.

I'm not sure how I feel about Forest Whitaker in this yet. The setting and cinematography were absolutely gorgeous though. I think once I see Alan Tudyk floating a one liner in the full trailer, I will be fully hyped for this though!
