I sort of expected it look a little more... covert? Could obviously also be that they just put all the action in the trailer but I feel a little cautious right now.

Vader wiping them all out will be glorious.
I can totally see a last stand fight where they have to hold a position so someone can escape with the plans, and Vader is just mowing through their traps and defenses like it's nothing, and methodically ending them one by one. Give it more of a horror movie vibe, like the Nemesis or The Terminator or Michael Myers, the unstoppable force that won't go down.

Movie looks great. Can't wait.

That "I rebel" line is pretty bad, though. Even the characters in the trailer did a face plant when they heard it. I can already see the toy deal:

Main actress is a bit cringe-inducing, just like Ridley. I really hop we don't get a second Mary Sue just for the sake of the "strong independent woman" thing...again.

This shot is amazing:
The fact that a woman lead might cause you to be slightly suspect that it's pandering is so damn gross.

Wait, did TFA suddenly become terrible when I wasn't looking or something? This place loved that movie last time I checked.

Looks more interesting than TFA, honestly. Yeah. Branching out from the "omg Jedi!!!" nonsense is a much needed refresher for the movies. One of the reasons why I enjoyed the X-Wing books so much was because it followed normal soldiers. Also why Republic Commando is so legit.

I thought Ridley was ok at best, and maybe it's the delivery in the trailer, but Jones isn't scoring high marks yet.

And no, obviously it's not simply because she's a strong woman, That's silly.

It's because I feel like Kathleen Kennedy really wants me to know they exist. I'm aware they exist, compelling characters like Ridley from Alien make that point by being interesting, not by clenching their jaws a lot and doing everything perfectly.

What was bad about her acting?
Again it seems your main issue is her abilities not her acting.

The fact that a women lead might even make you slightly suspect that it's pandering is so damn gross.

Yeah I'm trying not to judge here but without any evidence to the contrary I don't know why that would be your off the cuff reaction.

Could you keep this sexist bullshit to yourself?

Mary Sue is pure sexist nonsense. People never say this about the ENDLESS "perfect" male heroes.

I've been way more interested since they were announced in seeing stuff from these side films than the main trilogy. This shit looked fucking awesome. That beach shot was fantastic.

Yeah, it was just a little too literal for me I guess. Movie still looks AMAZING - so much of this trailer nails how I wanted the prequels to feel. Star Wars always had some grit and grime to it, and Rogue One gives that to us in spades!

This does feel much more like what I was primed to expect from the prequels in the 90s. There was a time when I thought Star Wars was mainly about heroic struggle in the militaristic galactic conflict... thanks to the games and books.

Since then we've seen the vision that SW was always a kids matinee serial (the prequels and its view of Star Wars as 'Buck Rogers for a new generation') and we've seen the view that Star Wars is a fantasy retelling of the heroes' journey (TFA and its recreation of ANH.... farm boy/girls and their leap into whimsical adventure)

But damn.. it feels good to see Star Wars as a relatively mature military backdrop again. For the first time on screen, I'd say, outside of glimpses in the OT.

Illness is the doctor to whom we pay most heed; to kindness, to knowledge, we make promise only; pain we obey.
Great teaser. I'm hyped. Looks like a really fun movie. Disney is at the top of their game. Keep em coming.

"GAF hates everything" is what crosses my mind when the Star Wars threads begin to swell with hate.

Hate leads to the dark side, ya'll.

I think we're witnessing the changing of the wind now. Quiet now as we observe and document. It's rare to see this happening in the wild.

This place nitpicked the fuck out of TFA. Whether I like this one or not I learned not to stick around for a post Star Wars movie discussion. And we can already see the complaints rolling in about another female lead. It will just be another annoying shit show.

Usually goes like this. First everyone likes it and after a while it sucks.

I'll definitely watch this, the story seems cool and it being a prequel is neat. 'I rebel' was off though, sounded lame.

That's exactly what I want. Making them powerless and having this slasher Vader being like a nightmare.

I really love the atmosphere in this trailer. It feels less safe than I'd ever expect from the Star Wars franchise and that is great. I can't wait to see more.

I'm really going to have to look at Forrest Whitaker's goddamned fucked up eye in a Star Wars movie? Ugh.
That sucks you can't get past something that he literally can't control or help. I've always liked his acting.

What is this TFA shitting in this thread? Did I arrive in an alternate universe where TFA is a bad movie or something?

I don't think the TFA was a bad movie, but I was always more excited for something like this than more Skywalker-centered stuff. They have this massive universe to tell stories in and I'm glad they're doing something a bit different here. We're getting what seems like a spy/heist flick here and that excites me more than any mainline film probably will. The possibilities are endless.

I feel like I'm taking crazy pills. When did Mon show up in EPIII?

A lot of the political scenes from RoTS got cut because Lucas felt the backlash from Clones and TPM + he wanted more screen time on Anakin. Mon was in one of them.

The problem is, the cut scenes were actually pretty interesting Birth of the Rebellion stuff with Padme, Mon, and Bail

Yeah, IDK what the fuck is up. TFA is awesome.

Is there any movie that can stand the test of time on Gaf?

hyped for this. trailer looks amazing and it built up a base for the story. The story needs to be very interesting, because we know they "fail" at tthe end and only get the plans because vader and the emperor let them have it, so the ride needs to be amazing.

This is set before Episode IV ... I think you're referring Episode VI?

Movies needs some more female leads these days. Give young girls something else to look up to than models and celebrities.

By giving them a ... celebrity?

(I also feel like we're ignoring the awesomeness that is Hera in Star Wars: Rebels, but that's a cartoon so I'm sure there's some "it doesn't count" factor there.)

I loved Daisy Ridley in TFA, but ...

"It's a Rebellion isn't it? I rebel." is some really, really awful writing, delivered even worse. I will still see this, and I'm still hyped as all get out, but man... that first bit was really jarring compared to the rest of the trailer.

It would make sense for him to be there since the Emperor dropped by to check on the second Death Star, too. I wonder if we'll get an Ian McDiarmid sighting then.
The Emperor showing up is the perfect "unexpected variable that suddently throws a wrench into the meticulous heist plans" for this kind of movie.

In what world did people think TFA was some movie that everyone unanimously loves?

I say this as someone with a ton of TFA nitpicks who's made a name for himself bitching about it on GAF: it's done far better than the average film in the court of GAF opinion.

This looks so much better than Force Awakens. And the lead girl looks like she might actually have personality, unlike Ray.

100% agreed. Though I had a ton of problems with TFA so as long as it doesn't have nostalgia and jokes every minute, a bad villain, and a boring rehashed story then I'll be happy. Good to see Donnie Yen looking like he'll have a better fate than the poorly used Raid actors in TFA.

Looking great. Hopefully it's a good movie.
Did anyone think Mark Hamill looked pretty unhappy to be a part of the force for change teaser at the end?

Curse you, because i now want this to happen.

Shows of Vader's insane power, gives a serious dramatic stance on the "heist", and gives the whole thing some "weight", given that the plans were the only thing that prevents the destruction of the Rebellion in Episode 4.

I am excited for this, it feels like something completely different with some classic Star Wars imagery. I am so ready for something new. I know that probably makes no sense.

Are they?

Rey is a Mary Sue. But also a likeable character. There's no fear about it.
She is not a Mary Sue because Mary Sue is not a thing. It's a term people who are afraid to admit they are sexist use. It's code, everyone else knows what they really mean when it is said.

No one ever complains nearly as much about the endless near perfect male characters in films we get endlessly every single year. Only when it's a girl do people get all flustered.
