Why can't Mario be a woman? Or Sonic? Why can't Samus be a man?
Exactly the same thing. And no, Link isn't an avatar. He is a character like the rest. Established and part of a brand.
Link cannot be female.
I'm tired of Link. I want to play as Zelda for once. Every game she's better than Mr. No Personality and yet she's always stuck doing nothing for 90% of the games.
I just can't see Nintendo putting in that much work for this.
(I'm ignoring Wind Waker for a minute)Facial expressions don't make an avatar into a character.
Linkle was added to Hyrule Warriors Legends after the super positive feedback from the concept in the art book. How is it outlandish to think that could have influenced Aonuma and his team as well?
But when you post that image, it makes it clear that there's way more established about the Link character than just 'wearing green'.
-He's male
-He has blonde or dirty blonde hair, typically messy
-He's a young boy or young man between 10-18 years old
-He's slim and fit
-He has blue eyes (when the art style can show irises)
I'm fine with making him female but there's no denying that you would be utterly changing the established template of who 'Link' as a recurring character is.
The rumor doesn't say female Link. It says pick between two characters. Link cannot be female. Link is a man's name. Link is a man. He's always been a man.
Not really the same thing but what would be wrong about change mario or sonic into a woman? Why can't Mario be a woman? Or Sonic? Why can't Samus be a man?

As far as gender choice goes, I dislike it. I dislike character customisation in general. I prefer set characters, of whatever gender.

But having three games to establish a personality of a character, to see their emotions, how they make decisions and how they act do.
The Hero of Time is a character. There is absolutely nothing anyone could possibly say to make an argument the Hero of Time is an avatar and not a full blown character.
Link is a man's name?
Pretty much every game they publish lets you play as a female character these days.
I see Lady Link as basically being Nausicaa, especially considering the Zelda U Link design so far. Given that, yes please. Nausicaa Link would be best Link.
"Link" isn't even a name outside of, I guess, a pretty rare shorthand for "Lincoln", which is not the case here. You are arguing made-up semantics.

Also it's a video game so whatever.
Link is a man's name?
Would be awesome if I could pick Link's gender!
Can I have the same choice for Samus next?
Someone should add this to the OP.
Nintendo World Report's Neal Ronaghan says he heard similar stuff from multiple sources.

Partly because of the character, yes.
Zelda should be the female option -- if only to guarantee that saving her (yet again) isn't part of the main plot in any way.
You mean the choice between Link and some new female character.
The rumor doesn't say female Link. It says pick between two characters. Link cannot be female. Link is a man's name. Link is a man. He's always been a man. He'll always be a man. A company doesn't gender swap a 30 year old character, one of the most well known and established video game characters of all time.
People need to really go into this full on assuming it's Link + Other Character. Anything else will just leave them disappointed.
I agree actually. But this is still pretty big news.I honestly don't care about voice acting. It's just kind of whatever.
As far as gender choice goes, I dislike it. I dislike character customisation in general. I prefer set characters, of whatever gender.
Will buy on NX, assuming all of this is true.

Spirit Tracks and Skyward Sword Zelda are the best characters in the series. Time to dump that green elf Nintendo.

Could this have been a female character model all along?
nah too flat :^)
Since there now is a "Linkle", it would certainly be strange to have also the name "Link" as a female name. However, there is the male version of Andrea, Andreas, and Andrea still can be used for a man, so I don't know.Link is a man's name?
I think you're being a wee bit disingenuous by saying Link is exactly the same thing as Samus, Mario, and Sonic. sure, Link might be a character like all the rest but in a much different way according to the Zelda universe. each Link is a totally different person. why can't the hero ever be a woman? I'd say that the answer to that question has more to do with our universe than the fictional Zelda universe.
Link has no personality. He's just a blank slate.
This was a change done in the last year or so, almost certainly in response to the public outcry. Unlike say Fire Emblem or Pokemon where this stuff is planned long in advance, I'm not expecting any dialogue changes with NPCs.
I'm arguing Link cannot, and will not, become a woman and people need to temper their expectations and assume it's two separate characters, as the leak implies.
I would totally play as "Maria," to those posing that hypothetical.
