Stellaris - Paradox Dev Studios new sci-fi grand strategy game

I'm going to campaign for this bad boy in the next election.

Any idea when this is up for preorder? Less than a month away from release and I have a stack of bills (not really) that I need to be spent ASAP on fulfilling my Culture fangasm.

Spent yesterday watching the first few parts of the Blorg stuff with my wife, and oddly (awesomely?), my 9 year old daughter. She was enthralled and swears she wants a copy of the game. I knew my wife would want one, but was surprised about my daughter.

I would suggest taking a look at how EU4 works. So far it seems like the game is designed around starting much like a 4X game, but then shifting entirely to being more like Europa Universalis or Victoria. Personally I much prefer Paradox style games, EU3 is probably my most played game ever, over 4X, Civ4 being my second most played, but it isn't everyone's cup of tea.

I read a bit more and still looking forward to. Looks like what Masters of Orion 3 should have been

Bringing the next generation up right tbh

Just make sure you snag that Blorg mod for her day 1 :P

I will deal with the unruly like I do with all revolts/rebellions in paradox games, rule with an iron fist and become tyrannical and lose a lot of opinion - which will later bite me in the ass when a foreign power supports future revolts... but at least it's always fun to lose.

Wonder how this would affect your relationships if you are in an alliance or federation, might be more complicated to rule tyrannically while being in a federation more so than an alliance due to the diplomatic mechanics related to that. Since it's a paradox game I expect that federation members would come down hard on my tyrannical action if they run oppose to how I operate after the fact of joining the federation and could flow into a civil war in the federation which will be awesome.

All over my faaaaaaace

And lol at people finally calling out the genocide obsession on the Pdox forums. 'Bout time XD

I'm a little perplexed by some of the 'concerns' a handfull of people are expressing over there to be honest. I expected those forums to be above all of that. It's only logical for people to be joking/commenting about something you don't usually get to do in video games.
I don't think anything should be off limits in fiction and if you can't distinguish between reality and a videogame you have other things to be concerned about.
Still, it's the internet so I guess I shouldn't be surprised.

You're a lucky man. I've been trying to get my nephew into science fiction for years without success.

I guess that would depend on the ethics of the goverments comprising those federations? I imagine xenophobic empires won't be joining any federations at all 'cause you know, but they implied that it should still be possible for militaristic goverments to start working together as well. A federation like that would probably not care at all.

I can't wait to have a kid, and hope it's a nerd for strategy games and sci-fi.

You lucky man.

I'm already trying to plant the seeds in my little one, but right now it's just Thomas and trains.

"But what if the train had a rocket booster and was traveling to another planet!?"

"No daddy! Sodor!"

The thing is, it's kind of pushing past the point of healthy expression within the fandom. Offering the option is fine, but the sheer enthusiasm can be kind of offputting. In Stellaris' case, part of that's down to the Warhammer 40k fandom, and that's fine, but it's also something you see when people talk about their other games :P

Fair enough. Reading the same handful of 40k related comments over and over again does get a little grating.

Meh, it's no mroe offputting that the people super excite about playign Uncharted 4... and the inevetable 1,800 in game "murders" they'll commit while controlling Nathan Drake, psycopath extraordinaire.

We're adults, we are shooting/purging pixels. Placing any sort of complex moral trappings unto that, without some major qualifiers is silly, IMHO.

No one ever wonders if Risk shuld involve less killing of troops, or if Monopoly should include some consideraiton for the poor.

It's because a portion of the Paradox forum membership complain you can't commit genocide in EU, and enjoy playing as Germany a little too much (Nazi RP LPs) in HoI. So some don't give them the benefit of the doubt here.

Edit: They also complain you can't enact the Holocaust in HoI. Because they demand historical accuracy.

This. There's some very real enthusiasm for genocide there, or at least excuses for it.

Well you can commit genocide in EU. I remember when someone pointed out, in response to one of the devs adamantly stating they will not allow genocide (in the way of ethnic purgings) to be simulated in EU4, the "Attack Natives" option in the colonization sub-game, where you can literally wipe out indigenous peoples to make settling easier.

The implication being that Paradox wasn't okay with the Holocaust, but inuits, native americans, australian aboriginals, ainu aboriginals, incans, mayans, etc, were fair game. Hell, there are some uncolonized provinces in the Scandinavian peninsula you can subjugate.

And I'll try to assassinate him. Failing that, there will be a public purge of all Gungans from the empire. I doubt that could have much of a negative effect on public relations, anyway.

Is there any good, short video that I could show a friend who is interested in understanding the basics of the game? I don't know if I can convince him to watch the entire Blorg video right off the bat.

How short are we talking about?

Anyway, a lot of new screenshots on the steam page:

Psionic armies! nice.

Think they're going to get to the endgame on the Blorg stream before the game launches?

I doubt it, unless they continue their Blorg game during the 24 hour stream on release day.
If that last screenshot is an endgame event that means it should take about 400+ years to get to that point and last weeks stream ended somewhere in the 2260's if I"m not mistaken.

thinking about making factions for nintendo properties

Lylat Military Republic (Star Fox)
Mushroom Star Kingdom
Chozo Culture (Xenophilic uplifting race of Metroid)
Star Empire of Akaneia (Fire Emblem 1 country)

stuff like that!!

Haha, Mushroom Star Kingdom is a good one! I might use it.

I'm trying to think of a variation of Kingdom of Hyrule, but I guess that's fine as is.

how did I forget Hyrule!!

I think you understand more than most I'll be making a Earth Republic that transforms into one man rule as my game goes on as my first game;)

Game 1 is gonna be the (my) Terran Union.

-Individualist
-Materialist
-Xenophile

Haven't decided on a government yet, gonna be between direct democracy and science directorate depending on what the latter turns out to be, exactly.

Also traits are still in the air.

Ethos:
-Fanatic Materialist
-Militarist

Traits:
-Intelligent

Government:
-Despotic Hegemony

Species type either space foxes or these guys:
0LKSOFS.jpg

If I decide to go with the latter their home planet will be called Z'ha'dum, like the planet of the Shadows from Babylon 5.

Or I might scratch all of that and decide to go with Individualist, Materialist, Xenophile's and try to create something as close to The Culture as possible. We know ringworlds and AI ships are in at least, so I might be able to get pretty close.
I still have 4 weeks left to think about it.

Man, I can't even remember the last time I've been planning my first playthrough of a video game this far ahead of time. I've been going through this stuff in my head for months now.

For my first time I am probably going to go with spiritual peace loving aliens. Focusing on keeping the empire happy and productive to hopefully outpace my local rivals to 'inspire' them to become my vassals. Failing that, just fund any rebel collectives they have and watch their empire collapse from the inside. That said, I also really want to try a really sinister alien slaver race, so if the peace lovers fall through I can always swap to my lunitic playthrough.

I keep changing my mind about what to start as. I can't even choose whether to be human or not and what my starting FTL will be.

Warp is the recommended beginner type, but I'm going with Hyperlanes. I find the added direction helpful. Plus, cheaper ships, so that's nice.

I like how you can't simply take their advice with no additional negative effect other than stopping research. Good ol' humiliation.

I think that's just part of the dynamic of how Fallen Empires operate. They don't offer advice or make suggestions, they issue demands. They're pretty much dicks.

Dicks with superweapons.
