Dark Souls 3 PC performance thread

Anyone having problems with both kicking and lunging attacks when using a DualShock 4?
It's not impossible to do, but unless I consciously give a swift motion on the left stick and press either R1 or R2 in PERFECT SYNCHRONIZATION then I just end up doing a normal attack.
Haven't had this problem in the first two games. And it only seems to be isolated to my dualshock. When I use my 360 controller it's all gravy.

BTW, really wish there were proper LOD and mipmaps adjusted for mid-high and enthusiast systems. The textures look real, real rough sometimes.
I'm enjoying the HELL out of the game, but there are many issues with this port that aren't insignificant.

No issue with kicks, often coming out when I don't want them to (moreso than in previous games) but definitely having issues with the lunge/jump attacks compared to DS2 (which I played through with a DS4).

I can safely say I hate each and and everyone of you who aren't getting stutters
sort of kidding

I only get the stutters when the saving icon appears, I tried setting "prefer maximum performance" on nvidia control panel and installed the 364.91 beta drivers with no luck.

Apart from that annoying stutter the game runs amazing

I dont only get the save stutter but also a stutter when loading new assets, doesnt matter what settings or res is set to.

For the most part this runs fine for me minus some odd hitching when I open/close the fucking menu.

I have the exact same problem.

Though that's relatively harmless compared to the actual crashing some of you here are experiencing.

Locked 60 FPS at 1440p with a 970 sounds off.

(I mean, you can get 60 in some areas, but also drops down to 45)

Yeah, I'm running a 970 @ 1440p and it's 60fps some of the time, 55 most of the time and the occasional dip to 45 and lower. Though gsync mitigates all that pretty nicely.

i5 2,8ghz
GTX 770 2GB
16GB RAM

Playing on an AOC 1080p gsync monitor, with low shadow, low lightning, high textures.

The game plays in the mid 50s FPS wise.

anything tweaks I could do to get 60? It's mostly fine because of gsync though, but it would be nice to lock it up

It's locked for me. But the auto saved causes stutters
on occasion.

What's your CPU and how do you define "locked"?

For me, "locked" means no drops whatsoever. The game dips to 57-58 once in awhile so that's not locked for me, not counting stutters during saving.

What's your i5? If it's a 760 then you can try overclocking it. This game can be quite CPU bound. I am not very sure about the VRAM consumption on that settings so you might be VRAM limited, in that case nothing you can do.

The simple solution would be to lower the resolution as it's the most effective way to increase performance in this game. If you are ok at playing this at 900p I guess you can even set most settings at High.

My 970 at 1440p reaches 77/78 degrees, i'm a little scared honestly lol

My 390 gets to 85-90 regularly. Apart from now its broken and anytime it gets to that temperature it crashes. My room has its own climate and I don't understand how, Its impossible for that room to be cold.

How often does the game autosave? I remember DS1 autosaving with everything that happens, if it stuttered so often it would be super annoying.

When you open inventory, check messages, pick up items or kill enemies I think.
It doesn't happen every time though or when killing enemies even though it saves, but definitely a lot - not enough to make me not want to play it, game is goddamn gold.

Yesterday the game ran perfectly fine (some very rare dips to 57-58 fps every few minutes, for like a second) and it would slow down ever so slightly for a split second sometimes when saving. It was 99 percent of the time a smooth 60 fps

Today it chugs like no tomorrow, my cpu useage is constantly at 90-100 percent , in areas that ran perfectly yesterday it now shugs down to 10 fps for a second or two before recovering , those rare slight slow downs are now regular big frame drops et

I should have waited a month or two for a bunch of patches to stabilize this POS

It's not my pc either my temps are fine my cpu and gpu are running at their intended clockspeeds, no issues in other games.

I had the same issue. I had to unplug my controller, Restart my computer, plug controller back in and then play the game. It cleared up my low fps issues.

The people saying it worked fine before but is now stuttery - are you sure it's not an online issue? Tried playing offline just to see if that smooths it over?

Turn off Motion Blur and Depth of Field, should help.

I bumped up my resolution to next DSR option since 1080p leaves more headroom than I imagined, so I'm now downsampling from a weird ass 2013x1183 resolution to 1080p at 60 with gtx 970.

Locked might have been the wrong word to use. It hovers between 56-60 fps in all areas I've been in so far. But to be honest, it might have dropped a bit lower without me noticing it even though I play with the Steam fps counter always on.

Havent had a crash in the last 4 hours.
Have to reset lighting to low every time I launch the game though.
Turned off auto detect settings, makes no difference, eveytime I launch, lighting is set to max.
No big deal really.

I rebooted multiple times and it didn't do anything, also unplugged controller:p

So I fixed my performance issues, I'll post what I did, anyone else with poor performance (slowdowns, big fps drops, stuttering) can try this too to see if it fixes it for you:

I turned off intel turboboost in my bios (since the random slowdowns and wobbly performance seemed to be due to constant high cpu useage )

I made a profile in nvidia control panel for dark souls 3 to use the maximum performance preset (most likely this wasn't the issue for me as msi afterburner showed that my gpu never strayed from 1300mhz gpu clock ingame)

My cpu useage went down from 94-99 percent on ALL 4 cores to 65-75 on core1 and 40-50 on the others and now it's smooth as glass again with not a single stutter (not even when autosaving), fps has not budged from 60 a single time and frame pacing feels flawless.

So maybe the game is causing problems with turboboost or the intel speedstep causing it to automatically downclock thinking it's idle. It used to be a very common problem with my phenom II with amd cool n quiet (similar to the intel speed step function) but never happened on my current pc with the i5 4690k , until now I guess.

So if you have poor performance on an i5 and gtx 970 try disabling turbo boost (and speed step if that doesn't help)

Anyone using steam overlay for framerate? I can not get the framerate to show up on this game.

It worked the first time I launched it and after that it's not working at all. The steam overlay works, but not the framerate counter.

Could it be because i'm using the steam controller and it's using big picture mode when I launch it?

Been playing it on a 980Ti and I've been having micro stutters too, just after exiting/equipping new equipment at times, other times just in gameplay.

Mine has a really strange stuttering pattern that seems to be related to light sources, despite changing the lighting quality to low. It runs at 60FPS in dim areas with multiple enemies but as soon as there's a light source on screen it starts stuttering like crazy.

I'll post my specs tonight.

My 970 at 1440p reaches 77/78 degrees, i'm a little scared honestly lol

Maxwell cards can handle long sojourns to temps of up to 83-87 degrees. Just make sure it doesn't go over 87 and you'll be fine. That's the point where many nvidia 3rd party manufacturers program thermal throttling to kick in.

I cannot get my ds4 to work. I have ds4windows. I start the program and it sees the controller, I select hide controller option and start the game. The game doesn't recognize button presses. Any ideas? I'm on Windows 10.

i5 3570K @4.4GHz
GTX 670 2GB (OC'ed, +78MHz core/+600MHz memory)
16GB 1600MHz DDR3 RAM
Game installed on an SSD Samsung 840 evo

Game is mostly 60fps but would drop to ~55 every now and then especially when you look at a large landscape from above like the first time you arrive in
the Undead Settlement
or when fighting
the fat knight with the halberd in High Lothric Wall
. Lowest I've seen it drop is 50fps at
the burning tree in the Undead Settlement where you encounter the fat lady priest for the first time
, so far that's the most demanding area I've come across to.

In terms of stability and crashes, I've been lucky to only encounter 2 and both were my doing since I guess my GPU OC was too aggressive (even though it's stable in other games) so once I toned it down to what it's at now its been smooth sailing. I also do have the same save stutter that most people are having, annoying, but at least its not happening during combat I guess.

These are my settings (1080p) btw:
oVIl60R.jpg

Edit: Forgot to add, this is with the Geforce 350.12 driver (the GTA 5 driver). I will try the old 314.22 driver and see if it helps, especially in that demanding area.

sort of kidding

I think everyone has to be getting at least minor stutters. There's no way anyone is holding a locked 60 fps without 2-3 fps drops here and there. I think some people just aren't noticing it.

I'm stuttering on a Titan X even at 1080p.

Do you have any other USB devices plugged in beside mouse/keyboard? I know some people where saying they had other devices that were conflicting with it just in this game.

Do you have any other divice that could be recognized as a controller? Like driving wheel (g27, etc...)?
If you have, unplug it!!!

Dipping to 53fps minimum now that I've reached
Irithyll, the first bridge especially.
Been 60fps almost locked until this point.

what setting causes the high RAM usage? i keep getting low memory crashes after playing a couple of hours, on max settings. i have 8GB RAM.

Is my game bugged?

Whenever I try to talk to the lady at the firelink shrine, my guy attacks her instead. Same thing happens if i choose "level up."

what setting causes the high RAM usage? i keep getting low memory crashes after playing a couple of hours, on max settings. i have 8GB RAM.

It's probably not a setting, there seems to be something weird going on with the memory usage regardless of what your settings are. So far several of us have fixed the crashes by increasing the amount of virtual memory we allow windows to allocate. I've gotten by with 2 - 4GB of virtual memory (up from 1GB) but some people on reddit are recommending 10GB+, which seems excessive. But that combined with setting lighting to low seems to have fixed all my crashing for the time being.

If you need help with increasing your virtual memory check the first post for a link to my post about it (I'm on mobile otherwise I'd link it haha)

Edit: I also mentioned bordered windowed mode in that post. One theory I saw as to why this helped me is that Windows Defender is using up more resources when DK3 is running maximized for some reason. No idea why that would be but it could explain why I needed to use windowed mode along with the virtual memory increase to stop my crashing.

formatted everything, downloaded the game again

set the lightning to low and auto detect off in the xml, marked it read only

restarted the game no crash so far, i'm at the High Wall of Lothric

I reckon that this autosave hitching affects everyone, right? No exceptions I figure. Happens often whenever I quit the menu, pick up an item, or do a gesture.

This needs to be patched otherwhise I can't play like this. Will wait until an update takes care of it.

Uhhhhhhhh, I just want a game to NOT have these kind of issues on release day. Frustrating as hell.

Anyone with a R9 280? How the game work with this card?
R9 280 3GB, FX-8320 and 8gb.
No matter what settings I use or resolutions (720p and 1080p), framerate hovers between 30-40 fps.

I'm not sure is my CPU bottlenecking performance. It might, but there are people with a lot weaker cpu than mine and they are getting 60fps.

I don't remember what is this area called
where flying demons take you off to a new place
, but here my fps occasionally drops under 30. 25fps was the lowest.
And this is on 720p low settings.
