Final Fantasy IX PC/Mobile |OT| How did the source code survive?

My roommate can't get a controller to work with the game at all. Was really hoping I could finally get him to play FF9.

Try this. Unplug the controller first, then play the game. When you have the control over Zidane, plugin the controller. Alternatively, alt-tabbing out and in to the game seems to be working as well.

There's a whole guide on missables in FF9 though, if you're OCD about that kind of stuff.

FF9 is one of those games.

This is the FF where if you don't find a certain item very early on you miss the only chance at getting someone's ultimate weapon, correct?

Is there only one instance like that in the game? If so, where in the story should I not continue past before I find said item?

It's the 12 hour mark thing to get to end-game, which is not very easy at all. But I'm sure there's tons of other missable stuff too in general. Not unlike the other FF games of the era.

It's amazingly not the stupidest thing in the FF series, not as silly as FF XII's "if you open this random chest in Rabanastre underground, you cannot get an ultimate weapon" lol :P

And yea good thing about FF... there's always plenty of guides to go along with the popularity of the series, especially in the PS1/PS2 series.

That's the one I was thinking of! My bad :P not sure why I remembered it being FF9.

Is my memory faulty or is this something they broke in this version, it seems like Zidane's off hand weapon never changes. I swear this wasn't the case in the PS1 version.

And they fixed this in the IZJS version of FF12. Basically the Zodiac Spear thing in FF12 was more or less a bug, the four items boxes apparently shared the same byte with the Zodiac's Spear's box which mean if one of the flags for the byte was triggered made it the box that normally had the Zodiac Spear have something entirely else.

In fact treasure boxes in IZJS are handled much differently in general in the sense that some boxes respawn and have have different drops each time, sometimes having one time special items like new Gambit options for example.

I do hope the FF12 Remaster rumors are true and they are using the IZJS version as the base.

Since there's a fast-forward option, getting EXII should be a lot easier right?

Fast-forward, no encounters, master abilities, etc. Yeah, it's pretty easy.

Also, it's on PC so it'll be possible to cheat engine the timer as well if you want to play the game on your comfortable pace and/or without the boosts.

For people looking for achievements: the one requesting you to watch 79 ATE is missable. Because 79 is the total number of ATE present in the game, so you can't miss any of them.
In some scenes, like the first time you reach the Black Mage Village, if you select an ATE others will become unavailable. The same thing happens when you reach Treno for the second time. So there's a very specific order you need to follow to watch all of them.

Also another missable is the coffee quest one, it will reward you with a miniship action figure.
To take the last coffee you need to visit Dali before the card tournament, take it from the closed room in the windmill and give it to the old man in the observatory. Of course you should own the other coffee too (one can be found trunk you saw in the ATE with Tantarus near the beginning of the game, the second is in the kitchen of Maiden Sari).

I'm trying to get Excalibur 2 too, I'm proceeding this way: one save for completion, and a parallel save for the "speedrun".
Since, as other people told, you don't need to level up, no random encounters, 5x speed, master abilities etc. it's very dumb achieve the goal.

Speaking of, I'm gonna need some cheats for hot & cold.

The mini game's certainly... Something. I actually kinda liked it the first one or two times I did it 100%, but ever since it's really just been a tedious pain in the ass.

Man, I reached the point in which I need to find all chocobo treasures.
Also, are the achievements for choco treasures and 21 beaches bugged?
With the boat I'm sure I landed on a good number of beaches, still 0/21.

What is this icon in the bottom right and how do I get rid of it? If the answer is restart the game then I'm pissed.

Re: Chocobo Hot and Cold.
High speed mode kinda breaks the game, but also makes it more... bearable? I'm pretty much always able to dig 8 times with high speed mode since the timer doesn't go down at the same rate the game gets sped up, which wasn't possible before of course, so it made everything rather tedious when it came to getting chocograph, and not now!

Yea the IZJS one is much better, I have the translation or undub of that I think.

Got all treasures from chocographs plus all cracking in the mountains. I'm missing one dive treasure, but that's available from disc 4 only.
Man, I hated Hot & Cold back in days, I still hate it today with 5x speed.
Oh, regarding the treasure achievement: it's not bugged. Simply Steam for some reason doesn't track it even if there's a counter.
Also the beach achievement is related to a quest Fat Chocobo gives you, not to the boat.

I've been looking into modding this to make the battle HUD smaller again and strangely I've stumbled upon quite a lot of code and text that suggests this was (or still is?) planned for the Vita. One example is that the warning you get when enabling a booster is literally stored as follows:
Code:
BoosterWarningNotVita,\n\n[CENT][D06050]*This feature cannot be disabled once active.[C8C8C8],\n\n
BoosterWarningVita,\n[CENT][D06050]*This feature cannot be disabled once active.\n[CENT]You will also be unable to earn achievements.[C8C8C8],\n
That line is fully localized and integrated into the code as well (with platform checks). Sadly, nothing points at a PS4 release being planned yet.

Agreed. 5x is is way too fast (wtf Square :p), so I patched it down to 2x. Battles feel so much better now.
Here's a link: Booster x2 (battle FPS w/ booster = 30 instead of 75). This file should replace Assembly-CSharp.dll inside "install_directory\FF9_Data\Managed". Be sure to make a backup first!

I also tried a modification to upgrade the default battle FPS to 24, which looks pretty nice IMO. It speeds up all the battle animations as expected, but not to the degree that it looks bad: Default Battle FPS = 24, Booster x2 FPS = 48. It shouldn't break anything, but again, be sure to make a backup in case it does.
You can also set battle speed to "Slow" in the menu to get as much time to think as before, except with faster animations and better FPS.

It seems scaling down the UI requires some more complex modifications which sadly I can't do. Applying the Waifu filter to the backgrounds seems like a lot of work too. Let's hope other modders will take care of that! :)

Just wanted to say thank you Duder.

The default fast forward speed is WAY too fast. Your 2X speed makes everything a *LOT* more manageable. Running most of the game with the 2X speed, thankfully the music doesn't speed up like emulation. I also tried your 24FPS file but that seemed to make everything a bit too jittery for my liking.

Although it seems like the FMV's still speed up and music skips in them, would have loved it if it just sped up the game and kept the FMV's at the original pace.

is there any way to do that ?

secondly, is there anyway to reduce/make the UI smaller ? the menus and boxes take a lot more of the screen during battles, have to keep X pressed to keep it hidden.

I'm not big on the character intro naming screens. The game goes out of its way to not name characters until they are introduced through dialog. Then they shit on that by giving you stats like age and shoe size. Seems like a strange choice.

The rumble seems quite obnoxious too. Will be turning that off. Nice port overall. Probably going to be playing this for the next few weeks. Might try and read this while playing:

The small quote I read was exploring the socialist ideology of mognet.

Has a fix been created for the XB1 controller spazzing out in the main menu? This has forced me to either use a DS4 or replug my XB1 adapter.

Also wondering if there was a method for skipping the launcher.

When you control Steiner, go chat with Queen Brownie.

Why you call her Brownie?

I love how they changed the naming screens in this. The shit is beautiful and you can use the keyboard. They also added some extra tidbits to make it seem like a profile giving you a little extra info. I just noticed that when it came to give Garnet a nickname. That shit is cute.

Vivi is called Bibi in french? lol

I think all the name in french version are translated from the japanese pronunciation. (FF8 too, Rinoa change for Linoa)

For the better and the worse.... like beatrix. In french version, her name is Beate and sound like "dick" in french

But Zidane is Djidane right? If it were directly translated then it'd be Yitan, like it is in the Spanish version. I think the Spanish FF translations are some of the more direct as far as naming goes, save for the spell naming system, but magic like Ultima is actually 'Artema' for example, with the Japanese one being Arutema.

Actually, "Dji" in French sounds exactly like the Japanese ジ (Ji), perhaps even moreso than "Yi" in Spanish. If it weren't directly translated, they would've just taken the English "Zidane". Now it's sort of a mix between the two, which I think is pretty nice.

That sounds easy enough, I'll try to look into it when I have some time. No promises though, because I'm going to be pretty busy this week.

the translation is really different in each country.
As the personalities of the characters, never finished the game in english. But I read Zidane had a character "more aggressive" in English Version. In french, his more soft.
I also read in Japanese version, Zidane was different compared to english version

BTW the translation of FF9 (and 8) for E.U is lot better than FF7

The only reason Zidane is called Djidane in the french version, is because of the soccer player called Zidane.

The main translator admitted that tidbit in an interview.

Did that controller mod ever end up working out? I really want to buy this but no analog is a deal breaker to me

Didn't know this existed.

Not convinced by what I read in the Amazon preview (I agree that FFVII is a writerly text, but not for the reasons Chandler seems to forefront), but went ahead and ordered a copy as some of the later chapters seem pretty cool. Hopefully there's some strong Baudrillardian readings in there, as I think most of the games (but especially VI, VII, VIII and IX, where the protagonists are all basically simulacra of human beings) lend themselves nicely to that.
