Rewatching gamesmaster tv show.

In a nostalgia trip and came upon the full series of gamesmaster on YouTube, while watching I was shocked to come across a full head of haired frank oconnor and a teenage looking John Davison. Loved the show as a kid, anyone else have the feels for gamesmaster, I wonder why games on to haven't taken off?.

I was always more of a Bad Influence fan, but I loved both and it's a real shame there aren't any shows like this on mainstream TV any more. That being said, I enjoy shows like Outside Xbox on YouTube, and I guess that has replaced the need for gaming programmes on proper telly.

EDIT - anyone else ever watch Bits on late night channel 4, with the three women presenters? I didn't like it so much, but it was still worth watching.

Violet Berlin... ahhhhh.

Stew's laugh is still the same :-D Always seems so out of place. This was also clearly before he let himself go etc. (insert your own KD Lang, Morrissey etc. comparison :) )

Bits was an ace and wonderfully irreverent show. Loved it. Aleks went on to work for the Guardian for a long time, Bouff does stuff for some horror channel, and I don't know where Emily went...

I really miss Gamesmaster, though. Dave Perry did a great heel turn for that show as the very boo-able guest some weeks, and Dominik Diamond was great as a host for something that should have been awful.

Stuff like this shows where TV is going wrong...gaming's a huge industry, on par with movies....why can't we have a regular Gameswipe or similar?

My gaming TV is now Outside Xbox and Jim Sterling with the occasional bit of AVGN or Angry Joe.

Watching the Bits one - am I being thick I thought Bits was out before Popworld? How did it copy the other's tone when it was like 2 series in?

Frank O'connor traded in his British accent for an American one? I never knew that. Wonder if that came naturally over time or if he forced it quickly.

Any other Consolevania fans?

If you read that and don't know what it is, it was probably made for you if you're in this thread.

They did a 'live' Gamesmaster show in my village at an Airshow event

Got picked out of the crowd to take part.

Won the first 2 rounds of Streetfighter 2 on SNES, then got knocked out on a score challenge playing 'Cool Spot' (anyone remember that?) on Sega Megadrive

Got a 'Psygnosis' baseball cap and a handshake from Dominik Diamond for my efforts

Memory might be failing me here but do any of you guys remember the Gamesmaster Halloween special that was shown at midnight on channel 4?
Didnt they do a top 5 goriest games and played a bit of Mortal Kombat. I remember begging my parents to let me stay up to watch it.

What channel was Cybernet? I barely remember it.

ITV usually really late at night, we're talking like 1am - 2am so I'm not surprised you barely remember it :p. Had the lovely Lucy Longhurst doing the voiceover.

Anyone else remember the .tv channel on Sky for the short period of time it lasted for ? They had different programs on their to do with computers/videogames between 6pm/7pm and 10pm. I remember some miserable bastard called Will Hanrahan presenting it who always seemed to be moaning about something.

As a kid/teenager I remember watching all these:

Bad Influence
Games World
Bits
.tv
Thumb Bandits
Gamesmaster
Consolevania
Gamesville (this was so fucking bad)
Movies, Games and Videos
Cybernet

Probably others I've forgotten about.

I think half his family is scottish or something like that. Dunno where was born but as someone with a Jamacian background, you wouldnt be able to tell that im british if the need arose.

LOVED that show, so many random memories, such as when Dominic Diamond married Whigfield for some reason.

He's from Edinburgh, so it's instinctual for him to trade up. ;)

ITV at around 2 or 3am on a...Saturday? Movies Games and Videos had at different times a similar late night slot and also Saturday morning/early afternoon if I recall correctly...

* * *

al: yeah I liked [.tv]'s output (and the computer channel before that). Was my first exposure to Kate Russell on Chips With Everything.

Even though it was likely terrible looking at it objectively, I loved Games World during the early days of Sky 1. Bob Mills makes anything great...even when held back by the watershed!

Yeah literally all I can remember is bits of the intro...it was some kind of blue grid turning into a ball wasnt it? And was the voiceover some kid of CGI character?

Thread is getting me all nostalgic, the 90's were awesome

Bad Influence

Cybernet

IIRC it was a a camera swirling around a robot which had a TV screen for a face.

I may be making this all up though.

Bits was my favorite. their review of kingpin made me go out and buy a voodoo graphics accelerator card. lol. i liked their more quirky, skit heavy approach to the video game tv show medium...never liked the competition focus of gamesmaster...so never was a fan really.

EDIT: vids usually followed bits i think too, which i also liked. another quirky take on movie and TV show reviews.

Bits was awesome, I remember the first series had a Nordic woman (Swedish maybe ?) as part of the trio but from season two onwards it was Emily Booth with the other two instead.

Good lord I remember most of those shows. lol

Movies, Games and Videos was a favourite because it was always so overly positive about everything and I saw a lot of exclusives at the time on there. lol

Cybernet and Bits along with Box Office America always provided the late, late night combos I'd always watch every week. Those and of course Vids. lol

You guys are making me fucking nostalgic for the turn of the century. Back then I'd just stay up until 4am every day watching TV. They played Fist of the North Star at around 3am on Channel 4 as well.

Those were also the days of Bravo tv channel on sky where during the day they'd show Airwolf, Knight Rider etc and then I'd sit up all night watching Hong Kong/foreign films that they showed. Was how I got into John Woo films.

Fuck I remember that! I started watching it from the beginning too and then one week they just...stopped airing. Pissed me off to no end and I still to this day have never finished watching the series! LOL

I remember during those times Channel 4 would show the odd WWE PPV too. Late night TV in the UK was just awesome during that time. lol

Channel 4 used to be absolutely brilliant for showing stuff late at night. They used to do all kind of foreign film seasons - Jackie Chan, Wong Kar Wai etc and show anime as well. Can't remember when it died off a bit for them but they never do that now as you'd get them more on Film Four.

4Later was my shit.

I also remember lucking out by switching over to BBC 2 around 2am and occasionally they'd be playing a Hammer Horror movie.

They also had some great Horror seasons which, if memory serves me right, Mark Kermode use to do intro for the films.

And of course the film seasons on BBC2 being introduced by Alex Cox, Mark Cousins or Mark Kermode. Or was Kermode Channel 4 mostly ?

I remember Kermode introducing Ringu on its first showing going "This film is brilliant and especially the part WHEN...." and goes on to explain the whole ending lol. He copped so much shit for that and he even says he deserves it :p

Apologies, completely off tangent, that whole period was awesome tv wise especially if you were a night owl like myself.

I started watching 4 in the middle of the night because that's when it showed Babylon 5 but I ended up watching a ton of other stuff there like the old Godzilla films.

I remember that first showing of The Ring on Channel 4. The only other movie that had me legit shook like that was It.

I've mentioned this before on GAF, but 4Later once dedicated a whole evening to hentai and other adult anime. To the point where Vids had an episode regarding hentai. As a 15-16 year old, it was quite the time to be alive.

Was it Channel 4 that screened The Texas Chainsaw Massacre? I just remember it screening with Kermode introducing it and talking about the film's history, ban and unban. It was one of those films with as a kid and teenager growing up was legendary because this thing was so fucking shocking and disturbing that it got banned! So when they screened it with the Kermode intro I remember myself and friends hanging out to watch it...lights off...and the movie was crap! What a letdown! LOL

Stuff like Vidz, their Godzilla season, the banned films season, the space footage set to dance/electronica... it was fantastic, eclectic stuff. It all seemed to collapse after things like Big Brother - and earlier/other reality shows - started, when you'd end up with stuff like that bulking out the schedules as it was cheap to make and could fill out schedules quickly. Hugely disappointing.
