Sony Playstation: First Party Studios & their Current Projects

I guess if it is PS2 Classic then Downhill Domination should be hot on its heels. Both are extremely underrated.

Oh man, I'd buy like 12 copies of Downhill Domination if only so I could see a brand new version on PS4 some day. Incognito. :/

I mean, if Motorstorm could look so amazing on PS3, I can only imagine what it a new DD would look like on PS4.

Here you go:

huh, the only would be interesting is chuckdoud.com, and only because it was registered in the same day as Dead Dont Ride.

But Chuck Doud is the Music Director for SIE, so its nothing. Still weird that Arran would register a website for him

The more I think about it, the more I find Dead Don't Ride is a great name. I hope it has a sense of humour; I'm kind of thinking something like Grim Fandango crossed with Mad Max.

The only thing is that the acronym might case some confusion when people start talking about what dance moves they've been busting out.

Probably a PS2 classic, I would guess.

At some point Sony will simply decide to be REALLY conservative with their release dates and then surprise everybody by pushing them forward when the actual work is achieved.

Pretty disappointed to hear that they still haven't found a way to announce a new title without killing the hype with a delay.

They just need to stop announcing release windows so early. I'm always fine with delays, I don't want devs to kill themselves to get a game out by an uncertain date and I always want a game to be as good as possible. A slip from holiday 2016 to early 2017 isn't bad but the fact that a year changes makes it seem bigger is some eyes.

Why can't it be that they were on schedule and something in development got in the way? Development is incredibly tricky. Especially with a game of this scale.

I don't think there is any hype being killed either. It would be going from late 2016 to early 2017. It isn't a big deal.

This had ''delayed'' written all over since the reveal at E3, but then the devs and Sony kept saying ''2016'' and had me believing it would be the case. Sad but ok if true

It never came out over here so I guess that's why it needs trademarking.

Oh, I see. Guess that is why

I was thinking GOW4 would be spring 2017.
Actually Horizon could be an Feb-Mar title while GOW4 could sneak in Apri-May, so yeah you could be right. Man with a lineup like that I dodn't think Sony cares that they have weak Fall releases, as long they conquered the first half of a year they are pretty much solid. Just let third party fight themselves in the Fall XD

Yep, it makes sense but there will be angst regardless. I mean, what difference does releasing late 2016 or early 2017 really make for us? It is a matter of a few months difference.

I'm shocked. No seriously, this was a 100% lock for NOT 2016 when the devs first said that they would delay to 2017 if needed. They said that to sort of get people in the mindset that it could be delayed to soften the eventual blow.
Which begs the question, why does developers lie so often about release dates? E.g. Atlus kept reiterating that Persona 5 was 2015 until the last minute. And Sony said Horizon was 2016 when it clearly never was. It's annoying.

It's a console war thing. The console war for this gen has already ended so it won't make a difference on that front. From a consumer perspective, it doesn't make a difference for me because I already have an open world RPG to fill the gap: FFXV. Guerilla should take as long as they need to finally make a game that doesn't suck but Sony needs to quit lying.

Any software developer knows the answer. There's no "lie", the problem is that game development is not that easy as you think and it's hard to estimate the time required for a project. So missed deadlines is usual thing in software or game development.

No one lies about release dates, it's just impossible to be accurate more than a year out from release. Naughty Dog once tried that when they announced Uncharted 3's release date far in advance. Even though the game needed to be delayed they didn't do it and instead stuck to the date that they announced. The end result is that they and consumers wish that they'd just delayed the thing. Since then they've been willing to do that. And Yoshida has noted that after DRIVECLUB's issue they aren't going to hesitate to delay a game if that's what it needs. It may be frustrating in the short term, but in the long term everyone will be happier with the outcome.

I misspoke. I meant "why do publishers lie" since announced release dates are not the realm of developers. There have been cases where I got the sense from devs that a game will not release at a certain time but the publisher keeps on claiming that it will. The perfect example of this, that I couldn't think of earlier, is The Division. Ubisoft promised 2014 or something ridiculous and an anonymous dev came out to GameSpot saying that it would release no sooner than 2016. I don't think Sony has ever done this to ND but I think they have to Horizon.

Last August, a Guerilla Games game designer said that Horizon: Zero Dawn was releasing in early 2017 in a German interview. A GG dev later posted in the thread saying that they were targeting a 2016 release. From this, I feel like there are two release dates. The true release date that the devs know (early 2017) and the PR one that Sony feeds to us (and I guess investors).

I don't fault the developers for any of this. They do what they need to do and as the great Miyamoto once said, a delayed game is eventually good, but a rushed game is forever bad.

I think that was actually the same developer in both the interview and the forum post (Mark Norris the producer of Horizon). I'd say any time a developer simply announces a year a game will be released, you should take that as a soft date. Particularly when it's expected that the game will be released late in a year. By soft date I mean one that can slip if that needs to be the case. I very much think that GG were working their asses off to get Horizon out this year, but they may have come to the realization that it simply isn't possible. At least not if they want it to be as ambitious as they plan. I don't think Sony or Guerrilla were trying to mislead anyone with that 2016 date. It was the plan if everything worked out right.

Also, spring 2017 still might be a hard month for Horizon, Mass Effect Andromeda is prob coming around that too, and Im sure other big games might follow. But Im sure Sony will know these release dates beforehand and will stay distant enough of it

lol wat? When did they even get the liscence for that? Maybe just a multiplat game Sony pictures is involved with or something.
Activision had the license but it has expired I believe so maybe Sony made a deal with Disney to do an exclusive spiderman game since they are working together on the pictures side

This been posted yet? Supposedly Sony's working on a Spiderman game

From the guys who leaked GoW4

Is that account legit? If there was no deal between Disney/Marvel and Sony then it's a movie tie-in... but Activision has the rights to do movie tie-ins through 2017. Doubt Sony can just go "nah we let one of our studios do a tie-in (for PS4 only?) even though the contract says you got the rights through 2017".

I don't see it happening. I want it to happen though... especially if it's a goat open world adventure that doesn't suck.

Sony making a Spider-Man game makes no sense. This is a company that wants to own all of the IP's they sink money into. There's no benefit to them building up the Spider-Man brand in gaming when they can never own the IP outright.

I believe Activision ended that deal early and started removing games from online stores early last year

It's simple. They got the rights for Spiderman in the mega deal they made that included Destiny and Call of Duty
and Crash
.

I hope it gets some space from Mass Effect. I really want this to have a successful launch but a new IP close to a major established franchise in the same genre could be tough.

Sure, on the other hand I think the actual premise of Horizon is more attention grabbing than ME, which is a rather generic sci fi. Horizon is a pretty bonkers mix, but personally I am anticipating it far more than ME.

They removed their original games that aren't related to the movies due to the rights reverting to Marvel/Disney (and that started 2-3 years ago?). Their movie tie-ins are still available and we know that they can make games through 2017.

I really hope this is true, I want a good Spidey game for once (open world only please).

Why would Sony make a Spider-Man game? They wouldn't have ownership of the IP!

Having said that, Sucker Punch would be a fantastic fit. But I don't believe it.

They pretty much have ownership of the movie license. Well Sony Pictures has, maybe they learned to work together and Activision obviously has no interest in renewing the movie tie-in contract.
