Final Fantasy IX PC/Mobile |OT| How did the source code survive?

Part of the reasoning for that is to prevent a game-breaking glitch. They edited some of the chocographs so you couldn't get to the Air Garden (IIRC) too early.

Aw, they fixed that in this version? I never actually did it before, but part of me kind of wanted to try, just for the heck of it.

For those who don't know, (chocobo spoilers, I guess?)
finding chocographs is how you level up your chocobo, and in the original game, it was possible to get enough to get a flying chocobo well before you get the airship. You could then get to an area of the game you aren't supposed to go to until much later, which causes the game to skip like an entire disk's worth of content, leaving you woefully underleveled and confused. I don't recall if it actually broke your game or not, though.

Dagger is stuck in her mute state, along with missing a good chunk of items.

I certainly wouldn't blame anyone who cheated their way through hot & cold with the speed boost. It's not difficult, it's just tedious as fuck..

I've got no qualms about doing it this time because touchscreen makes this one part of the game a fricking nightmare. Everything else is fine bar this.

So happy ..

Just completed this again for the first time in over a decade.

Got a little emotional at the ending. This game is so fucking beautiful.

I'm using a Wii U pro controller adapter.

... the buttons are all wrong D:

So how is the iOS port guys? Would be a great time passer on them journeys to work. What are the positives and negatives?

iOS version is fine, but you know, mobile controls. If you're cool with that, it's a good version of the game. It can be hard to move around when the speed boost is turned on though.

Whoa, whoa, whoa why is "B" on my X360 confirm. That's wrong.

FFVII used "O" for confirm and "X" for cancel, but they changed it with FFVII IIRC,where "X" became confirm and "O" was cancel. Same for FFIX. But now they have CHANGED THAT. What is this and why. It feels so weird. Is moogle calling still on the left button?

You can change it in the configuration after starting a game.

It will apply to that save file, but not in the "start" menu. But every time you load it will load up your custom controls.

Circle never changed for control in the JPN versions that's all, they were too lazy to make region specific versions I assume.

So many cheats lol ^^

Get some anti-aliasing on there brah :)

Japanese vs US changes. Sony wanted X to be the confirm button for US games after a certain point, so it got changed in localization. Same thing happened with Xenogears.

I'd say this is the "return to standard".

Cool, thanks.

Huh. Never knew that. Interesting. Still, I'm gonna change it because it's what I'm used to. :P

Given that SE has only ported a single PSX title to PS4 so far, I wouldn't count on it.

That said, I'd love to see all of their PSX games get this treatment and release on PS4 as well.

It's Final Fantasy. It's pretty damn likely it'll get there eventually. They like games on as many platforms as possible. They also like staggering releases for double dippers.

How would I do this? When I start the game all I see is resolution and windowed options.

Force it in the Nvidia or AMD graphics options, whatever card you have.

Not sure if Intel even offers these options if that is your only GPU, I think they have a few maybe.

i've played the game like a million times already :p the cheats are a welcome addition.

Also, there's a lot of JPEG on there but I run the game on my laptop's native 768p, looks great on the screen itself, probably not blown up on higher resolution displays.

Quina is secretly the best character in Final Fantasy.

That s/he truly is.
Too bad having him/her optional in disc 1 means not a lot of dialogue or development until you're SUPPOSED to get him/her.

Are there any unwinnable fights in this game? My memory is coming up blank. It's been many years since I played this.

The three Beatrix fights are technically unwinnable; she uses an all-kill move after a set period of time or if you bring down her HP to zero. Don't know whether you get a game over if you lose the fight proper though.

Not yet, I hope someone figure out how to change them soon. While it isn't possible, I'll be making some experiments:

This is wonderful.

The loss of details is absolutely better than the shitty "jpeg artifacts" of the original version.

With some subtle scanlines to blend the characters with those smoothed out backgrounds, the result would be perfect and close to a full remaster !

since i figured out how to get my xbo elite controller to work with this game flawlessly i've been really enjoying it on PC... even with the low-res environments. It's a true joy to replay.

I'm sure it's been mentioned, but if you have an XBO Controller, try unplugging it BEFORE to start the launcher for the game, then after you get to the Continue screen plug it back in, and it should work great from then on. No more "forever moving to the left" T__T

These would only look okay if the characters were similarly processed, e.g. same reason scanlines make for a more cohesive look.

Looks like a completely different aesthetic from a completely different company, but it's interesting nonetheless.

I did some poor editing to combine a game screenshot with one of the backgrounds from Mama Robotnik's thread. It makes me sad that we'll likely never see the original backgrounds.

Looks nice, is this xBRZ or SuperxBR?

With scanlines it would look extremely nice, that scanlines Sweetfx posted earlier works really well.

Would be great to have something similar for FF VII and VIII PC as well.

Effect feels a little too strong in the "smoother" scenes while in the last pics it looks much nicer I think.

They can't really "remaster" pre-rendered art unless they had kept the uncompressed art assets from before the images were downrezzed for the Playstation disc... which they appear not to have done.

That's what I was hoping for, but it seems like a no-go. The HD sprites on the low quality background just looks a bit jarring to me. My favorite way to play this game is still via PSOne Classics on an OLED Vita.

No. To get the final output I had to use a combination of filters, each one with its specific strength. The original assets from the psx game is a bit noisy (jpeg artifacts and small details that behave like noise in high res).

The process needs three passes:

First Pass: I have used waifu2x to scale by 2x, because it has a very powerful technique of noise reduction, besides its unmatched capacity to thin edge lines (this is necessary to not blow up edges at higher resolutions).

Second Pass: the great capacity to thin lines from waifu2x is its weakness too in a second pass (I tested it and the results aren't good), so I didn't use it here. A better filter for a clean source is Super-xBR, which I used here to scale from 2x to 4x size. It's the only one to not introduce aliasing, while keeping sharpness high. I didn't use it at first pass because it doesn't scale noise well.

Third Pass: To finalize, I need a linear filter to scale the 4x output from the earlier passes to the desired final resolution. There are many linear filters available (bilinear, bicubic, lanczos, jinc, etc) and the best one is Jinc, because it keeps sharpness high and introduce very little aliasing. So I've used Jinc here.

EDIT: Just found a second method to get similar quality using only waifu2x.

First Pass: waifu2x using Photo Model and Highest noise reduction. The highest set is necessary, because there are too much noise, mainly in dark areas.

Second Pass: waifu2x using Photo Model and None noise reduction (the first pass is enough for noises).

Hi, great rescaling, what's your software for upscale with this algorithm ?

Waifux2 is a web site ? (that's strange for me) but Super-xBR & Jinc ?

I use Retroarch for 2nd and 3rd passes. Though you can get similar results only using waifu2x as I pointed in my last post.

With Retroarch you can apply AdpativeSharpen over the output to reduce a bit the blurriness. Compare these with the latest shots:

Waifu2x working great for a first pass. But second pass loss a lot of detail i think.

I'm testing picture character for this .
