They are not wrong though.

Yeah they most definitely are. Plenty of movies with white leads have bombed and plenty with minority leads have excelled. I think either in this thread or another it was shown that there really isn't much evidence that a white lead helps a movie's performance in any meaningful amount

Of course plenty of movie with white lead bombed since that is the majority of the movie out there.

But not ScarJo, case in point Lucy. It have a good box office and its a pile of shit.

Holywood tried asian actress on anime adaptation before (Blood the Last Vampire) and nobody went to see it

Looking at Wikipedia it was shown in a limited release in only 20 theatres in the USA. And I suspect it had a lot less advertising than Lucy.

Star Power is if anything a self-fulfilling prophecy. They think "Star Power" is gonna be the deal and throw advertising money around, but won't when the "Star Power" is lacking. Just cast a japanese actress and throw money like usual.

Also, something I forgot, but was reminded of today: ScarJo wasn't the first choice, they approached Margot Robbie at first and went for ScarJo after Margot Robbie turned it down. Truly they went for ScarJo because she was "the perfect fit".

Straight facts

Straight facts also say it's best to have a bankable star to go with your brand.

Movies are made in committee and by focus groups. I imagine the people putting up the money are more inclined to listen to the braintrust than they are the angry fannerds.

For you, Ghost in the Shell is something to whinge over. For the producers, it's a real gamble that's put on more sure footing by casting Scarlett Johansen.

Didn't help Lone Ranger. A Disney movie with an existing IP and Johnny Depp as an native american. And it died horribly.

Its unfortunate that either the audiences are too homogenized or the industry is too interested in pushing homogenization, or both.

But to be honest, i don't even know where to start on how we would fix this issue with how things are set up considering the producers and money makers aren't interested in taking many risks like that in the first place.

I might see the movie eventually, but i hope that the Kenji Kawaii theme song(making of a cyborg) has a remix in the trailers and in the movie....Kodansha international's director says the adaption has respect, that would be a good start and set off some hype bells

You've GOT to be kidding me!!!

The operative word is gamble. It does not always pay off.

That's some great privilege some people got there then. If it fails with a known white lead for a native american part........"oh well thems the breaks, better luck next time". But if it fails with an unknown Japanese lead then it's......."see this is why we can't give them lead roles, nobody wants to see them".

I really hope Zendaya gets the lead role in Battle Angel Alita. Donna Dickens is already complaining about how no Asians were considered for that role.

I have no issues with that because its not a uniquely Japanese story. It has a really mixed cast of characters to boot. Place the locations aren't earth bound by any means, very multicultural.

Her name being Motoko Kusanagi isn't a specific reference?
I think he meant in the adaptation. If she is Deborah Dunham in a GitS set in New York it would be a tad bit weird, still a burned oppurtunity, but acceptable. But if she still has her japanese name, if it's set in Japan. Then we might have some big bullshit at hand. I will also rahe if she us half swedish.

I hope they do some major changes to setting and especially character name if they're going to insist on ScarJo.

People will complain about this, even if Zendaya gets the lead role. And this was the anime live action adaptation I really wanted.

People will complain but they'll have a lot less ground to stand on compared to this IP.

Battle is a completely different story with similar themes.

It has major characters with Japanese names. It will look bad in today's climate if they don't change the names.

The obvious choice is: she is a child of a Japanese/White "parents."

It's the only way! Her real name is Barbara Motoko Kusanagi

Doesn't the fact that she's a full body prosthetic make her race moot? She's been in a cyber body since birth. Hell even she's not sure if she's human or a just really good AI. That's why the series is called Ghost in the Shell.

It's not big deal. She's just a cyborg like you said.

The cast should be diverse though.

This is kind of off topic but do you have confidence that it'll be good? I did a quick google search and Cameron is attached
Cameron passed the project to Robert Rodriguez last year. A Battle Angel Alita movie done with that grind house style would be the best thing in the history of ever.
