Final Fantasy IX PC/Mobile |OT| How did the source code survive?

The detail you're saying behaves like noise for my eyes. I prefer a clean picture like this:

Some of these filtered images are way to painterly for my tastes. Played with squarealex's scan line filter today and I'm enjoying it a lot more this way. Probably going to try this diagonal movement mod as well soon because it's annoying me during hot & cold.

Did the cotton robe trick today to get rich. Glad one of the later villages sold the ingredients. I'm finding I appreciate the game's nuances a lot more this time around. The way you'll go through sequences without a class are really nicely balanced in my opinion.

Feel like the game is really flying by though.

It's a little baffling to me that they don't have analog controller movement despite console style analog being a thing on PCs for nearly two decades. Wonder if they'll patch that in or not. It clearly goes in analog directions with the mouse too so... Huh?

The portraits looks beyond awful "smoothed out" lmao.

As for the rescaling, that linblum shot is kinda awful. Too watery.

But Blumecia and the swamp look gorgeous filtered. I guess it would require specific tweaking for each map, not a set ratio for every one of them.

That's far, far too strong of filtering.

I get it looks smooth, but it certainly doesn't look right.

When it's shrunk down into the scale of the game UI, maybe it would look OK though, in the quote box it looks fine, but not enlarged.... there's only so much detail and sharpness that can be gleaned from low-res, it doesn't extend infinitely. Though I do love your SuperxBR work for SNES I've seen you post elsewhere, those look fantastic.

Pretty sure the FF IX PC port portraits are of higher quality anyway.

So I just had my game crash.... and I hadn't saved for awhile and I was crushed...

Then I realized that the auto save is wonderful!!

I'm sure its been discussed in this thread, but easily my favorite part of this port...

See, I find that the effects of this filtering on those background images is very hit-and-miss. Some of them look great... but others completely change the feel of the environment being depicted.

I'm certainly looking forward to someone going through the game with it once someone finds a combination that works without making the backgrounds look too much like watercolors.

It's interesting to me that in this composite image, the sharply rendered 3D characters still stick out from the backgrounds. Less so than with what's in the port now, sure, and I would certainly prefer this to what we have... but it still isn't as seamless as it was in the original version.

Beware when you're doing Chocograph hunting. You done zone anywhere so it won't autosave. I got caught by a dragon in the islands of the Forgotten Continent and died. Thankfully I only had to redo a few Chocographs , but it was still anoying.

I'm loving this rerelease to itty bitty pieces, the only real weird drawback was a glitch Steiner had during winning fight animations where his arm disappeared, but overall I'm so happy to play FFIX again. So many feel good moments, really one of the best in the series... Makes me wonder why they departed from the FFIX formula because it's damn near perfect :)

The end of disc 2 and the beginning disc 3. :(

but something is missing ...

Oh year ! Wheres is my Insert Disc picture ! >:'(

Ok, i'm now, all in one... but is not request to save between the two...

Short hair Garnet is the best Garnet.

I don't know, a lot of people seem to think that style of game is "obsolete", even though they can't say exactly why.

Because it looks "silly" to have realistic-looking characters lining up and taking turns hitting each other, and we can't have things being silly in our video games.

But seriously, a Final Fantasy game set in a more "fantastic" setting, like 9, 10, or Tactics, with turn-based combat (either pure or ATB), and even just PS3 level graphics would make me more excited than basically anything else could. I'm just glad I have 9 to play again, since it's as close to my ideal as the series has gotten.

I would definitely kill for another classic-style FF like IX. With ATB, a "regular" fantasy world, overworld, static camera angles and all.

What drives me crazy is, you don't have to have the characters all just standing still in a row to have turn-based combat. You don't have to have random map encounters, or any of the other tropes people typically associate negatively with classic RPGs. But people lump all these together and say all of it's obsolete.

But yeah, even if you do have everyone standing in a row with modern graphics, so what? There are a million "silly" aspects of realistic-looking games that no one cares about. I wish Square or some other major studio would take it upon themselves to show people what can be done with a classic RPG with cutting-edge tech.

Someone made a tool to change fonts: https://github.com/Albeoris/Memoria

Future features:

  • Import text
  • Disable cheats
  • Exit to main menu
  • Export/import textures
  • Redesign for battle menu
  • Rewrite the game engine

Interesting. Any screenshots of the new fonts? I have no problem with the font as it is now. Mostly just looking forward to the redesigned battle menu, even though I'm already well into Disc 3 and probably won't replay this game again for a long time.

I didn't see any screenshots. And I won't test it yet. I'm more interested in the feature to change textures that hopefully will be available in future releases.

Dragon Quest XI on PS4 is our best bet right now. I really hope it's successful enough to justify future entries remaining on home consoles. Please don't break my heart, Japan.

I hope people make some quality difficulty mods for this release of IX like they have done for VII. Since IX is a much more balanced game I'd imagine it'd be a lot easier to do something interesting with its enemies and battle system.

There's a whooping 2,3GB patch that just went live earlier. No patch notes yet though.

Fascinating..

Edit: It's up.

The latest version will correct the following issues. Please update your app.

- The fog effect on the world map causing the screen to turn white on devices with certain video cards.
- Dismounting a Chocobo near Chocobo's Forest causes the Chocobo to appear above the forest.
- Dismounting a Chocobo directly below Ipsen's Castle causes Zidane to freeze.
- During the ending, a portion of the subtitles overlap before the previous sentence has finished.
- Other minor bugs fixed.

Ayy..

2 gigabytes of Chocobo fixes.

As much as I'd like to have analog controls, I don't expect them the patch them in. I'm not optimistic at all.

Is there a cheat for Chocobo hot and cold? And for stealing? I've done 100% (minus Excalibur II) a few times before so I'd have no qualms about speeding up the process.

Yes, please. Not playing this port until every background is redone like these.

Are you going to do such a thing? Because, wow, this is game changer.

Well, if someone release a tool to export/import backgrounds to the game, then yes, I'd work on a pack of upscaled backgrounds.

Press F1 and turn on Fast Forward for Chocobo Hot and Cold. You run and dig as super speeds, but the 60 second time will go down like normal. Makes it super easy to get 8 items almost all the time.

Good to know. Sometimes the luck would be so badly against you in that game lol. Still the best overall chocobo sidequests in the series though

Did someone find more of the original background art?

What do you mean by analog controls, the analog sticks? They're working for me.

Yeah, that's why I say ALMOST all the time.

You will at one point spend 60 seconds, hitting that button and digging a few hundred times and only get like two things. But I would say something like 95% of the time I was getting 8 items, and the biggest problem was Chocobo Garden and the split sections.

The PS1 games (and, uhh, mouse controls here) allowed for full 360 controls. Here it's the same as playing on the PSP with the analog nub emulating a d-pad, ergo 8 directions only. Serviceable, it's not like playing a game like Mario 64 with D-Pad only, but it's not really something you want if you know there's a better option.

There has to be more than this in a 2.3GB update? Stealth fixes/additions?

It's probably the movie fix. If it's baked into the FMV and part of a large file then there's only one solution: replacement.

The ending FMV is actually broken up into two segments in the files (bookending the "How did you survive...?" text between Zidane and Garnet which doesn't seem to be part of the FMVs anymore) and neither are nearly as large as that.

Dude. Those look terrific. You are just making me wait until they are released (and being able to be installed).

How do you export them? I mean, if you have them and upscale them, you must have some kind of tool to extract / import?

Thank you and keep up the good work. Well worth a donation btw.
