Persona 5 getting an announcement on May 5, 2016

I strongly doubt there's going to be any mention of the US release. It's a Nico Nico stream of an event at Tokyo Tower.

Also, while i'm 80% sure it will release in 2016 in the US, I'm definitely braced for the 20% chance localization will move into 2017.

Is there any chance an Xbox one announcement is made also?

Release month and day would great. JP only even, because at least then I know when the clock starts (at the latest) for localization and can ballpark the NA release.

I really would like another playable character or two.

I think it'd be nice to not know every party member going into the game, to keep it interesting and maybe throw some curve balls. Then again, while playing it doesn't take much effort to spot the character with colorful hair haha

If you want to play Japanese RPGs, the XBO is not the system to own.

I agree with you. But Persona seems to be ready for that Final Fantasy style boost into public perception.

I readily assume Final Fantasy is going to show up on Xbox. I even assume that VII Remake will eventually show up.

I don't think it is out of the realm of possibility that Persona could show up. I do realize the footprint of Xbox is tiny in Japan, and smaller than PS4 in the west. I also realize that Persona has mostly been a PlayStation Exclusive. Since Sega acquired Atlus, I wrongly assumed Sega would want the game available to as many Westerners as possible.

Don't assume. Almost all of Square Enix's games bar the biggest of the big and the western ones have not been announced for XB1.

Even KH3, which was announced for both platforms, is not going to be supplemented by KH2.8 on Xbox One.

I actually doubt they would have bothered to announce any games for XB1 outside of maybe FF15 if they had known how things would turn out because of their sales expectations.

So for Persona 5, its not even a matter of not caring about XB1 in any way shape or form(and i can promise you Atlus does not), its also about managing their sales expectations, and for a small team like Atlus which this is the biggest project full stop they have ever done, they don't have anywhere near the resources to try and attempt so many SKUs, even if they wanted to.

Yeah, it's probably one of the most thoroughly Japanese game events in a long time. The event's not intended for anywhere outside of Japan, which is why most of the people watching the stream internationally have to do so illegally.

Jesus... why are (some) Japanese developers so ignorant when it comes to, well, rest of the globe, don't they want money? I don't understand such mentality.
Maybe you have a case for Atlus, because of how much they've shied from Western venues for big reveals, but I think you're overestimating the size of the company and what it's feasibly able to do. There aren't nearly as many people working on the English version as there are the original, and that's not taking into account that the same group of localizers are handling multiple games at once. There aren't separate teams.

So you're talking about wresting the PR power from the US branch, by announcing the release date in a venue that doesn't accommodate English speakers, much less one that most English speakers haven't even heard of. Other sites will eventually pick up on it, but there's no reason to obscure information by putting it somewhere where it isn't relevant. What's the main Japanese audience going to do with it, assuming they can read it?

What you're suggesting pales in comparison to having a controlled PR cycle, being able to offer English media and having consistent messaging across all of the major English outlets, especially all at once.

People keep saying this, but I really don't think it's a realistic expectation to have.

Why not? I don't think they're saying a boost that will exactly reflect Final Fantasy VII, but a boost in that vein that will launch the series into the attention of a much wider audience than it has now.

I wouldn't assume any of Square Enix's Japanese games will come to XBO, save the two announced before the XBO's position in the world was known (FFXV and KH3).

It's telling that SE has announced a ton of JRPGs in the last year or so, and not a single one is coming to XBO thus far.

I would like an Xbone port as well. I know there isn't much of an audience but Persona 5 is a big title and porting a PS4 game to Xbone isn't complicated.

It's not so much the cost of porting, but rather the lack of demand for JRPGs from the XBO userbase coupled with Microsoft's very high minimum print order requirement.

Final Fantasy boost? No. But it could cultivate a seriously larger niche like maybe a From game or such. If they would market it properly, it has potential.
I'd be surprised if it even had that much awareness, the Souls games had the benefit of multiple games with good word of mouth releasing within a decent span of time which allowed that word of mouth to build with each game. They've also had stronger marketing pushes with each game and were able to reach a wider audience by being on multiple platforms.

I want P5 to do well but expecting it to reach Souls game levels of awareness and sales at this point seems like jumping the gun a little.

I expect Persona to be closer than ever to Final Fantasy sales, partially because I expect P5 to sell noticeably better than P4 and partially because I expect FFXV to sell noticeably worse than FFXIII.

I'm going to die laughing when this ends up being the announcement for P4: Cooking with Nanako and P4: Karting.

Obviously the Souls games have multiple games to benefit from. Persona would be more towards the start of what From began years ago. That's why if Atlus/Sega were smart they would build on the smaller WOM of P4G and use P5 to really push the series hard for the first time.

I recalled that XV's pre-order in Japan has surpassed XIII's, so it's hard to say. P5 is most definitely gonna surpass P4 in sales though.

Not happening as it was already stated at PSX (2014) that Persona 5 would be Playstation exclusive by Adam Boyes (SIE VP of 3rt Party relations). Although, if it is coming to another system, it will be on PC. Nothing else.

For the Final Fantasy 7 Remake, I could see it happening on Xbox One, but PC and the NX are more likely better candidates than it since it is only console debut on PS4 (source: Adam Boyes).

As for Persona 5, it is not happening... at all. As it was already stated to be Playstation exclusive at PSX by Adam Boyes. The only possible system that could get it is PC.

Unrealistic expectations.
Persona is a well know franshise in japan, but in the west just ppl in forums know or are excited about it. Final Fantasy is a name everyone know. Even my mom know whats Final Fantasy is. :P
