Uncharted 4 spoiler free early copy impressions

Hard to pin down what mechanics exactly we are comparing when bringing up MGSV.

Easy way though: did you play the MP beta? It plays like that but at 30FPS, though still just as responsive and in ways more impressive due to the sheer amount of contextual animations.

I think the only mechanics that can be compared are

Cover mechanics-how it feels moving around, aiming over cover etc. UC4 has it beat there easily as you can't blindfire from cover in MGSV.

Aiming, the feel of aiming a gun and the way the reticule behaves. I'd say they're about even. UC4 has better aiming reticule and hit markers. MGSV has FPS ADS but that's due to the nature of the game.

Shooting. UC4's guns feel better to shoot imo. I like the way the guns behave and the sound effects are amazing. MGSV is great too but the way the bullets spray and the reticule makes it not suited to playing it like that too much.

Movement. Even. MGSV feels godly when just simply moving around. UC4 feels great too although you can't sprint nor dive. UC4 has better animations and looks better in animations.

Melee, UC4 hands down. MGSV CQC is basically a three hit combo or slam. UC4 has beautiful contextual melee so there's lots of different ways to attack.

Yea, I'd agree with all of this. The melee is just the best. It's pretty much TLOU but the contextual animations and the AI helping you... it just blends so well that it could pass off as being scripted.

I'm on Chapter 9 right now. So far it's easily my favorite game i've played. ever.

I cannot take this.

I need this shit so bad. Tomorrow through Saturday I'm busy completely so might as well just wait until next Tuesday like mostly everyone :(

Are there still those awkward pauses like in UC2/3 where when the enemy is about to attack you and you have to sort of press triangle to dodge? Is it smoother?? In videos it's hard to tell since it looks like a script is happening since it transitions so smoothly.

If you can, record a non spoiler clip of you meleeing an enemy from a known location already(PSX demo area would be nice).

Is this the power of PS4 ? Whoa move aside Neo.

This isn't game of year this is game of all time.

I'm on Chapter 9 right now. So far it's easily my favorite game i've played. ever.

Reading Gaf impressions (and the review thread, lol) will be interesting. I am interested in trying the game out simply for the graphics and narrative presentation. I'm not really an action movie buff, although I enjoyed Tomb Raider DE on PS4 quite a bit.

Seems like this game hits all the right notes, especially with more expanded gameplay that will entertain an RPG focused gamer like me interested.

Sounds great but MGSV CQC has a lot going for it. You can three hit combo. Slam. Choke hold with interrogations, knife slit or getting the enemy to call out for friends. You can then slam from the choke or use the enemy as a human shield. You can also chain cqc slams.

EDIT: just wanted to say this isn't me saying you're wrong as I haven't tried U4 yet (hyped as hell though). Just wanted to highlight other aspects of MGSV's cqc.

Nope. The story isn't that captivating compared to the previous Uncharted's.

The gunplay is very fun though.
Meh, you're the first to say person to say you aren't enjoying the story. I'd say that's par for the course. You're the same guy who thinks UC3 is better than 2 lol.

I didn't mention this because that's entirely a mechanic for MGS as you won't be interrogating enemies in UC4 for enemy locations nor slitting throats. Human shield doesn't sound like something drake would do either via gameplay.

Two questions:

1). Are there set-pieces that rival or top the cruise ship and airplane from Uncharted 3?

2). Can someone post an in-game screenshot of that scene from the reveal trailer where Drake wakes up on the beach at night so we can compare that to the finished game?

No pauses like that since there's no counter anymore.

Also, I recommend playing with markers and threat indicators off. Makes the stealth more fun and allows me to engage in stealth and go ham when caught.

Edit: Story not captivating? Wow, can't agree with that. This games story gives off more of a TLOU vibe in quality then past UC games.

1. Has been answered. I said yes but really milage will vary.

2. It's set up differently so it's not quite the way it was.

Hmm so enemies just let you pummel them?? I remember in E3 the enemy grabbed drake and pushed him towards the wall, while that's happening the game just lets you mash square I guess?

is that scene even in the game? anyway it will look different just for the fact that the new drakes model is different from that one

You can't just stand there and wait for them to swing at you and press triangle. You punch them and when they block or counter you that's when you can do it.

How is the music in the game? In the MP beta, it was more dark and serious (like TLoU) than the bombastic soundtrack of the first 3 games. Is the main game like that too?

Think of it like TLOU melee. They don't just stand and take it and often times, your the one surrounded.

The melee system doesn't really seem designed to encourage lengthy 1v1 fights. It seems more the TLOU melee system done for larger brawls where your fighting bunch of people.

I've some questions:

- Is more open than other Uncharted during shooting? We can expect a lot of "arenas" like the one seen in the first gameplay video, where you can go about everywhere?

- Story is linear or make u visit tons of places like Uncharted 3? (I preferred Uncha 2 anyway)

- We have more options to play, stealth or action (like Last of Us), or is always pretty imprinted on the pure action?

...

MGSV CQC is not just three hit combo or slam and contextual melee sounds fucking awful.

When I think of contextual anything it tells me that it's obtuse and unwieldy. Give me actual buttons or keys to perform separate actions instead of making me have to do what the game tells me to to perform an action I want.

What else is there?? All you can do is either grab from behind and interrogate them, slit their throat or make them talk. There's nothing else you can do.

As far as contextual melee, you're looking at it like the game will do an action when it says to do it. That's not how it works. Say you're running towards an enemy and you hit square, in that situation drake may dropkick the enemy. Run while blind firing and then hit square and he'll clothesline the enemy. If you're coming down a flight of stairs and an enemy is below you and you hit square, he'll football punt the enemy. You have a shot gun in your hand, well the melee attacks will use the shot gun to hit him. It's not bad at all. I think MGSV has some light contextual melee like if the enemy has a gun in their hand, Snake will disarm them and stun them with a knockout punch. It's pretty much the same thing. Obtuse and unwieldy is not how I'd describe UC4's melee.

I really don't know why I'm not enjoying the story. I'm not rushing through it either.

Something about the story feels...wrong...or missing that's not really captivating me. I can't put my finger on it.

I was so hyped about it before I got it and now that I'm more than halfway done...

This feels weird to me lol.

Guys, How is the music ? Didn't see anyone answer that question. Is it anygood or just a snoozefest like most of Jackman's scores?

I liked what I Heard so far, especially the PSX demo, that was awesome !

1. YES!!!

2. Yes and then No

3. YES!!!!

It's hard to talk about that without spoilers, but my guess is the shift in tone and theme for this one. You know... and just in case for those sensitive even minor it may be
Nates not the same adventurer he used to be in ways.

Does this scene look better now that it is 30FPS? I was amazed at the AA solution, shadowing, hair, and shaders in the scene.
